I need work advice

So i'm having a little dilemma at work and I have decided to come to NS for help, we'll see how helpful this actually is.

So heres the issue:
I work at Zumiez here in Washington and every year in January Zumiez holds an event at Keystone for it's employees that are in the top 1000 out of all 518 stores for sales. At this event all the brand owners such as Shepard Ferry (Obey) Nicky Diamond ( obvi Diamond supply) and many more, along with every pro rider that has anything to do with Zumiez like Torstien, Eric Koston, P-rod, Rob Dyrdeck, Ect. They also give out tons of free product and you get to ride at Keystone for free for 2 days. Well there is a very good chance I will be able to attend this year. Heres my issue, I ski. Now you all know Zumiez doesn't sell skis and when I said something to my manager about skiing at Keystone she said that I wouldn't be allowed and that I wouldn't even be able to get the Zumiez mountain pass if I brought my skis. When I asked why she said that because Zumiez doesn't sell skis it's not part of the culture. I see nothing wrong with me bringing my skis there. Part of me just wants to say fuck the system and bring my skis and try to get away with it and risk not being able to possible ride Keystone for free just to try and prove a point. The other part of me just wants to be able to ride at Keystone and decide to demo some sick ass boards while i'm there ( I can snowboard pretty well too). So do you think I should stick it to the man and bring my ski stuff or should I just say fuck it and snowboard for 2 days in my B-dog and FD pants?

Spark notes: Zumiez won't let me bring my skis to a free trip to Keystone because we don't sell skis and it's not part of the "culture".

Bring skis and board, and switch after lunch the first day then ski the rest of the trip

Tell her that saying skiing isn't part of the culture is just pushing away potential customers, even if you don't sell skis skiers still need soft goods. Say your skiing/style is influenced by borders.

I'm no lawyer, but I feel like buried in this conundrum is a legitimate sense of discrimination since it's a place of work and you're entitled to the same benefits as anyone else regardless of how many pieces of wood you like to stand on.

this is the only part that matters.


it may not be logical, or fair, but if they're giving you a free pass, or providing you with a free trip and more, then they can do whatever they please. i know it isn't what you want to hear, but just be thankful (if) you get to go on the trip at no cost to yourself. the alternative is that you don't go at all. wouldn't you rather go for free, and snowboard, than not go at all? just roll with it, it'll be fun regardless. I hope you get selected to go

Yeah but I have also worked my ass off to get where I am with the company so far and I feel it's some bull shit that just because I ski that means I won't be able to shred one of the sickest places in colorado. I may not be the #1 salesman in the company but I still have sold a shit ton and made a lot of money for the company for only working part time. most people have to work full time to get to the sales i'm at right now.

bring libtech calls their skis, narrow ass snowboards (NAS) rent libtech skis for the trip. I have found the loophole you are looking for.

you get a special "Zumiez mountain pass" that lets you get into certain parts of the mountain that are only for employees at the trip so they will know.

This never happens at my local zumiez. People hate on zumiez because it's mainstreamed that culture but honestly they have a lot of really sick clothes.

Worked your ass off to get where you are? And where exactly is that? You're a part time salesperson. If you win the trip, go on it and don't make a big stink about something so trivial. Maybe you'll actually have fun if you're not too busy complaining. Free snowboarding trip >>> no trip at all.

I had to fucking do bitch work for the first year and a half running shoes and just folding shit to get to be able to get to a key holder position and actually get to sell some shit. I do agree with what your saying and that is kinda what i'm trying to figure out. do I just go with the flow and snowboard or do I try and make a point and try to bring my skis.

Don't worry about bringing your skis until you get invited. They will give you all the info on whether you can bring your skis or not. It seems like this event is mostly to reward and build goodwill among employees rather than customers so I would image they want you to be happy and be able to ski. If they don't say anything about skiing then bring them. If they say not to, then you can either bring them anyway and try to hide the fact that you're skiing which might not be hard considering there will be 100+ employees there and you may have to pay for your own lift ticket and maybe even rent a board. Another option is to get the email of someone high up in the company (not just the HR person who emailed you about the trip) and send them a serious email about how you worked really hard to sell over $100,000 worth of goods and how freeski and how the culture of the sport is influenced by the brands sold by zumiez and how you want to know if it's okay to bring skis. They'll most likely say no but at least you tried.

The people who show up at this event most look so funny.
