Newschoolers, I need your opinion and wisdom once again. I am split between participating in two winter activities, heading up north and skiing vs. heading into the city and running winter track. I know NS is the worst place to bring this subject because of the bias, but I would like to hear your insight.

I’ve been running track and cross-country since freshmen year in high school and I have been pretty successful. My freshman year I quit indoor track, sophomore year I was kicked off the team because I was ‘too committed to skiing’, and last year I ran an entire season, which only enabled me to get up to the mountains about 7-8 times. It is my senior year and my team needs me to break the 4x800meter relay record as to that I am the fourth man on the relay team. Running fast times will also open doors for me; college coaches are interested in my performance, and indoor is the last season that will play into the recruiting process. This may be the last year I run competitively. If I do run I have to be very committed; running workouts in the snow, losing my Saturdays to indoor track meets, training at school throughout winter break, etc. I will still be able to ski if I do run indoor track, but I will only be able to get up a several times in the season and I will not be able to progress b/c of the possibility of getting hurt.

I hate running, but I love racing. But what I am truly passionate about is skiing. I don’t need to inform y’all about the pleasures and addictions of skiing. I am truly split between this decision, and I need more opinions.

I am pretty lost in this decision.

Sparknote: I can either run winter track (and be recruited for college, and not ski), or ski (and have loads of fun my last year in high school)

You hate running. You love skiing. No point in doing something you hate, if you can do something you love. If you are picked up by a college for running, than they will expect you to run for them as well, From what you said I would say skiing. If you enjoyed them equally I would say Running because you get the post secondary benefits

The approach to this is not Run or Ski? It's Run for your future or Ski for your now.

If you had potential to become a competitive skier or possibly professional, you'd have more of a conundrum. But, it doesn't sound that way. Progression, new tricks, and ski trips are all amazing and make you feel great about yourself. However, the hard truth is that they're not going to benefit you in any kind of financial sense as it stands. Not to mention, you're not giving up skiing, you're just giving up skiing every damn weekend and trying to do doubles.

Running holds a potential future. It has been said before on the thread and I'll say it again: do the track thing because education and your future are very important. You can still ski and expand your passion for an amazing sport, but for this year, see where the running thing goes.

If, like you said, you actually hate running, then why have you done it for three years straight. Or did you exaggerate because you were hoping for an overwhelming response in favor of skiing?

Im sorta in the same situation as you..Im in my sophmore year and I do track and cross country for my school. My coach wants me to do winter training this year.I have an 18:40ish 5k time and do the 2 mile at 11:17. I chose to ski instead. What it came down to for me was which sport i would enjoy more.

imo(The fact it's your senior just stick with running you will have lots of time to ski in the future..)

Not necessarily. It's kind of dishonest if you get in because you say you'll run but then choose not to once you get there, but nothing says that if you go you have to keep doing the sport. If you're there on a sports scholarship you would lose it if you quit the sport, but they wouldn't kick you out of school.

OP: What kind of schools are interested? How interested are they (scholarships?)? And how good of a school could you get into on your own?

No they cannot kick you out your coach will just be very dissapointed in you. They can revoke your scolarship i think but if you can still pay or get financial aid you wont be kicked out of the college by any means.

I am in the same boat as you op. I have played squash during the winter for years and now coaches are expecting me to go to college fully committed to squash. Especially when you are talking to coaches leave the skiing part out because they will suspect that you are more interested in that. Of course even if you hate track I would still continue doing it just because it might help you get into a better college, and really the goal here is to strive to get into the best college you can regardless of location you will be better off in the future.

Interesting, I really thought they could kick you out

OP should still do whatever makes him happiest

he has maybe 100 years on this earth total, most of which is spent in school or at a job that he might dread

just have as much fun as you can, OP, lord knows it wont last

just ski. it's fun, you'll be missing out on quality skiing, because the times you can go, you can't progress and will just have to take it easy and be paranoid the whole time you're out since you won't want to get hurt. this is bias'd though keep that in mind since i hate running and i don't understand how people enjoy it even at a competitive level. i couldn't run for 3 hours an have fun, but i could slide down a mountain for that and more and have fun the entire time.

to be candid, my reach is Dartmouth, I do not meet Dartmouth's times to run for them, but I could possibly walk in with the possibility that I get in.

I'm not in the run for scholarships as to that my family and I saved for colegio.

My middle of the line schools right now are Colorado College, Colby College (Maine), Bucknell University (PA), Legigh University (PA), Bates (Maine).

I have the opportunity to run competitively at all of those schools, especially Colby!

update; this Thursday is hopefully my last day of indoor track. I have 9 days of skiing and aiming for 20-25. My 4x800 team fell apart and we did not shatter any records. I talked to several college coaches for potential recruiting, and that fell apart as well. I look back and I done fucked up with the season. I should have ski'd this season.

you realistically have one shot to participate in college athletics and most certainly only have one shot to compete in high school. I dont know you, but i was in a similar situation coming out of high school; skiing or college baseball. I chose the latter because it was likely that it was my only shot. If you choose to go the running route and dont like it, quit. youll most likely be 19 and still able to ski all the time into your later years. Thats a lot of skiing. I wouldnt waste an opportunity on something that i will be able to do for the rest of my life. Then again i dont know how competitive you are, so its whatever you wanna do, man.

Skiing can wait. You've only got one shot at this, and from the info provided you're good at track. If it opens doors than I'd take that chance. College is expensive and anything helps pay for it. You can ski later in life, but not everyone can compete at a collegiate level.

I was in a very similar position leading up to a year ago. I had played soccer at a high level for 10 years or so and had played in an extremely competitive and time-consuming league during high school. I enjoyed soccer a lot, but loved skiing. My parents wanted me to play in college, but I insisted that I didn't want to. I got accepted into a good college (with access to skiing) fairly early my senior year and my parents realized that it was a better scenario than me picking up a scholarship at a decent college while I was "miserable".

So I don't know you're situation with other colleges, but your decision doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing type deal. Deep down I knew that I couldn't resist skiing and I basically had to tell my parents that.

It's hard to go wrong by doing what you want to do. If you'd rather be skiing, with out a doubt, choose skiing.
I'm a sophomore in college, and so far putting skiing before almost everything else has worked out well.

I'm sorry to hear that the shit hit the fan, I know we applied to some of the same colleges (you PM'd me before). Anyways if it makes you feel any better I got deferred from Colorado College early action, no clue about anywhere else yet though.
