Newschoolers, I need your opinion and wisdom once again. I am split between participating in two winter activities, heading up north and skiing vs. heading into the city and running winter track. I know NS is the worst place to bring this subject because of the bias, but I would like to hear your insight.

I’ve been running track and cross-country since freshmen year in high school and I have been pretty successful. My freshman year I quit indoor track, sophomore year I was kicked off the team because I was ‘too committed to skiing’, and last year I ran an entire season, which only enabled me to get up to the mountains about 7-8 times. It is my senior year and my team needs me to break the 4x800meter relay record as to that I am the fourth man on the relay team. Running fast times will also open doors for me; college coaches are interested in my performance, and indoor is the last season that will play into the recruiting process. This may be the last year I run competitively. If I do run I have to be very committed; running workouts in the snow, losing my Saturdays to indoor track meets, training at school throughout winter break, etc. I will still be able to ski if I do run indoor track, but I will only be able to get up a several times in the season and I will not be able to progress b/c of the possibility of getting hurt.

I hate running, but I love racing. But what I am truly passionate about is skiing. I don’t need to inform y’all about the pleasures and addictions of skiing. I am truly split between this decision, and I need more opinions.

I am pretty lost in this decision.

Sparknote: I can either run winter track (and be recruited for college, and not ski), or ski (and have loads of fun my last year in high school)

do the track thing, you'll have time to ski later but the former is a one time opportunity, + college is a plus for you I'm assuming.

This is good advice. But i'd add do whatever you feel more passionate about. If you are going to do the track thing but not enjoy it nearly as much as you would going skiing, I would go skiing.

You def want to get in the best college you can get into. You will thank yourself later. Run track. By the way i ran a 413 mile in college whats your half mile split?

I pole vaulted in college and had the same reservations, but you have to realize that you've only got a couple more years to do this and you have the rest of your life to ski. Don't you want to see how far you can push yourself and see how good you can be? If you quit you'll never know. Stick with it, dude.

but you have to realize that you've only got a couple more years to do this and you have the rest of your life to run. Don't you want to see how far you can push yourself and see how good you can be? If you dont ski this season you'll never know. Stick with skiing, dude.

It depends how much it is actually going to help you with getting into college as well as getting money from them. If you're just gonna get looks from schools you don't really want to attend, fuck it ski. If schools you are interested will be interested back, do track.

Except your logic is flawed. He only has a couple of more years to run track at a competitive level. You need a team and running partners and coaches and trainers to reach your highest level. Those things aren't available when you're out of school. Not to mention you need to train hours a day to be a strong track athlete, something that he won't be able to do when he's out of school and has a job.

If you feel you can be truly successful at running and win races/have really good times, then forget completely about skiing this year, train your ass off, and RUN! If you really are a good/great runner it will get you into a college far better than you would have gotten into without it. It can really open doors for you right now and help position you in a place where financially you will be able to ski for the rest of your life. You don't have to run forever. You only have to run this year and then if running gets you into college you have to at least run Freshman year. After that the choice is yours with no negative consequences either way.

Coaches etc. aren't necessary in skiing but are in track and field, age doesn't play as much of an issue, and the time commitment is substantially less to reach a high level of skiing. Might want to go take a nap or clean that sandy vagina out, buddy. You seem pretty grumpy.

This. It seems as if you'd definitely ski if not for the college thing. How sure is it that you'll be recruited to run in college? How much better are the schools that you'd get into with track than the schools you'd get into without? Those are the things you have to figure out before you decide.

pretty much what everyone else said. if running actually will open doors for you, go for it, get into a good college, and get set for life. a good education can land you a good job, which will give you more money. and you can use that money on skiing, hookers, and blow.

do you really want to spend all your time doing something you don't like just to get into college? if you're not planning on running competitively in college why bother if you already have good grades etc.

Times?  Thats an important factor here.  Haha just kidding.
If you want my advice, I would only do the track thing only if you really truly plan on doing it in college.  If you want to do it in college, you have to be prepared for hellish workouts, twice-a-days, and 70+ mile weeks.  That is just the reality of college track.  If you want all that then by all means, track is your deal, but if not, you are going to be even more miserable that you are in track now. 
About me: ran track/xc in high school and wrestled with semi-similar questions until I realized I was not truly fast enough for D-1 running.  Now I am in college and run on the club xc/track team.  It is fun as shit.  If you go to college and dont run on the "real" team, try to join club.  Its a blast.

1:58/59, my 4x800 team is about to go under 8:00. As for colleges, I am looking at mostly D3 schools, but I do have the opportunity to run in the Patriot League (Division 1).

Education is significantly more important than one season of skiing. If track is going to get you into a school you might otherwise not be able to go to, you fucking run track. You can always ski later. You were still able to get out a few times last year, which is better than nothing, so maybe you can do the same this year. Sometimes you have to make a few sacrifices now to be able to do what you're passionate about later. People on NS glorify the ski bum lifestyle, but getting a good education and a good job so you can roll up to your slopeside chalet in your Range Rover is way more awesome.

Theclap ran track in high school and college. Idk about winter track though because he got plenty of skiing in.

It's up to you. I personally think not getting on the hill is lame but if you love running go for it.

If you stay in shape actually, the peak performance years of mid distance runners is 35. But i agree without doing track now hes fucked. You gotta stick with it

If it's just D3 schools, I wouldn't go for it personally, you won't get any money/scholarship support and you'll still be fully committed to the program and lose out on other college activities. If you get more interest from d2 and d1 schools that you can actually receive scholarships from, that's a whole different story though.

That's a nice 800 time though! I'm a 1600 runner, and anything sub 2 in an 800 just seems insane to me hahaha, the last time I ran the 800 was 2 years ago (sophomore,. spring track) I ran a 2:07 and I thought that was fast!

I vaulted in the Patriot League for Lehigh University. When I was competing I know the better 800 runners in the league were running low 1:50's and there was a guy from Army who went sub 1:50 a couple of times. With that said, it seems like you could definitely compete in the PL if you're already running sub 2:00 pre senior season. Good looks, dude.

It depends on how good you are at each one. If you're better at track than you are at skiing, by all means use that skill to get into a good school! Then ski as much as you can after that.

if you  go to college for track, or coaches bring you in under that impression, youre committed to that in college

if you want to ski in college, but you have a track thing, too damn bad, they can kick you out if you dont participate and do well (the 'do well' part might be bs, prove me wrong or right please)

just ski, fuck running

do what you love, not what will make the coaches want to give you head
