I think the news system and splash page updates which have been made recently are great, and from what I've observed, seem to be working very well. One more thing I'd love to see is a timestamp, displaying the time at which a new article was published, instead of just the date. I don't think this would be hard to implicate (it could also be applied to photos, vids, etc.).
