Is it just me, or is RBMH starting to take over the ski movie industry? Last year when I saw Red Bull Media house logo pop up on the screen at the Super Heroes of Stoke premiere, I died a little bit. Now, they are getting really involved in PBP, and this happened about the same time that people started complaining about how much Poor Boyz sucks. I am super worried that Red Bull is trying to gain more control over the film side of our industry, and I could see things getting really shitty in the future. Am I alone in this, or is anyone else worried?

I hear ya, but I also think they are pretty awesome too, the whole McConkey thing was pretty classy and they consistently fund good projects and produce great content, so yes it is easy to fear the big corporation entering the industry but at this point I see no reason to resent them.

i said the same thing in that thread. the unfortunate part about it is that rebull is a company geared solely towards profit and when they start getting into filming you know all that you are going to be seeing are riders (i.e. the machines (i.e. bobby, goepper, tanner (oh wait))) with their little redbull helmets talking about how X-treme they are.

I dunno, Redbull has done a great job in mountain biking as far as I can tell, Where the Trail Ends was incredible and the athletes and events they support across all disciplines are pretty cool. Why can't they do well with skiing as well? I also think donating the profits from McConkey to his kid is a pretty classy move, I understand the people skeptical about big companies killing the soul of the sport and I don't trust big corporations, I don't trust little corporations much more though. There are plenty of big companies that help grow and support the sport and there are plenty of little companies that hurt the sport, you can't make universal assumptions. I think Redbull has the resources to help filmmakers realize their artistic vision and make great movies. I also think they have the resources to kill the soul of skiing if they so desire, but judging by their track record which looks more likely?

I will admit that Mcconkey was an amazing movie, but that doesn't change my distrust for redbull. They are obviously interested in what will make them the most money. I know that a company could never ruin skiing completely, but red bull could destroy ski movies, because they are only interested in making as much money as possible, and whether or not a decision they make ruins ski movies is irrelevant to them. Guys like Johnny D, Scott Gafney, Josh Berman, and Todd Jones got into this stuff because they truely love skiing, and thats why all of these guys have put out some amazing movies over the years. RBMH was out to make money from day 1, so their potential to hurt the ski film industry is really much higher than you might want to think.

I agree, at this point though it looks like they are mostly giving money and resources to those guys you just mentioned, guys that I trust, they are funding freeride entertainment, brain farm, msp, pbp, etc, not necessarily taking them over (yet)

The McConkey movie was awesome! And made by Red Bull Media House. Let's be honest. Every business is in it for the money but in order to make the money, they need to make good films.

They mostly do distribution, you go to them with your movie and say "hey wanna spread this through your massive international channels" and they do that very well. so they pop a RBMH logo on it and send it out for you.

yeah i havent thought about it much but i was under the impression that RBMH was more of a money/distributor/PR kind of aspect to it. PBP, MSP etc have all still been making their movies..

but yeah idk how much say their money gets them on how the final cut of a movie looks. i would assume it's much the same as when salomon is the main big boy sponsor of a movie and probably requests that one of their riders gets last segment blah blah blah

Making money and making good content are not mutually exclusive, in fact id say they go hand in hand. They pumps millions into the sport and it benefits all of us because we get some great content. They deserve to make cash out of it and I hope they continue to do so, so they stay involved. At the same time nothing they do stops others from making their own content.

As for preferential exposure for their athletes, I'm sure it happens to some degree but there's always some element of bias in determining the line up for a movie.

More the merrier I say

Me too. So they make money off of the sport, who cares? They help athletes make money and make awesome films. I honestly don't understand why this is even an issue.

Same reason people love to hate on K2, Nike and other mega brands. They aren't CORE enough. They are sell outs. I call Bull Shit. Any company that is willing to invest and progress the sport is good in my eyes. Besides RBMH is just a promoter, they have no connection to the content other than giving the filmmakers access to more cash.

I see both sidesits progressing the sport. However in what ways? The compition side yes but the side of skiing that most of us love is not being progressed by RBMH. That would be the average skier trying to increase their style. I have no want to do a triple or even a double. It doesnt seem fun. None of the comps really look that fun.

What? Since when has anything Red Bull thrown money at suck? So PBP makes a few movies that aren't totally amazing and you think it's Red Bull's fault?

I'd say Red Bulls track record is pretty solid, both in events and video projects, so you know... I don't want to say your opinion is wrong, but.

Do you know anything about Redbull Media House? They make easily the highest quality films in the extreme sports industry. Go watch where the trail ends, McConkey and art of flight you stupid son of a bitch.
