Griffons or STH 12's?

Title says it all, but I know many of you would probably advise to take the griffons and I really like them too, but I'm trying not to spend too much money. Should I save $30 and take the STH's or go with the griffons.

^wouldnt say that. Sth with the driver toe is wayyyyy better. I have both can't really complain about either but I'm not to picky as long as the release right when needed

ive had griffons for 3 years. i havent had any problems. great bindings overall, i would highly reccomend

Is the oversize sth the standard with the Z toe? If so, yea, that toe is a piece of crap. Ive never had so many pre releases. I had two pairs of griffons, one set developed some serious play in the toe.

I wouldnt feel comfortable pushing my griffons as hard as my sth12 driver, px14s or px15s.

Sth driver or the new sth2 are much sturdier and have much better adjustment then a griffon. The driver toe features true height adjustment and wing adjustment which the narkers do not. Also the heel track on markers is full plastic and features no metal inserts. These features are true across the range so which ever royal family you get it will be lacking IMO.

ive had nothing but problems with salomon bindings. from the toe coming loose in both the wings and the height to ripping the heel right out of the track on a switch landing. my markers are light, and haven't steered me wrong yet. i may be a little bias because of my experience with them. You can adjust the AFD on the marker for the proper fit on the boot. The plastic heel mount plate is a fine design and i have not seen one come back damaged ever. Atomic and Salomon can keep their bindings.. so long as k2, volkl, and blizzard keep making skis, marker will be just fine.

Sounds like you have been fairly unlucky with salomon products. Did you warranty any of it I'm sure most of the issues you had should have been covered.

Just wanted to add though the marker toe does not feature a true toe height adjustment. It uses a sloped AFD plate which can give better toe height adjustment then a non adjustable toe but is not as good as a toe piece which can move up and down like a driver toe.

I have used jesters and they are good but I developed play in the heel and toe quite fast due to the lack of adjustment in the toe piece and the plastic track in the heel.

Does this mean markers are not good no of course not but in my experience in the industry I have seen the least problems with peaks and sth bindings so that is why I recommend those.

I have jesters, which are with the same design heel piece, and sometimes I hit my balls/leg to it. I hate when this happens.

They were covered for all the issues and was sent a new pair. but i just opt'd to go with marker. you are correct, its a sloped afd, that seems to work well for me and the small toe piece is a nice design. Im truely a fan of look/rossi as all my other skis have pivots on them, even as old as p12s. love those binders. i search the local craigslist for people selling skis with them all the time

for what its worth, it really comes down to the shop your in. our shop is marker and when people bring in stuff, its usually marker. For the adjustments, the salomons (older ones) tend to not test within spec and its annoying.

I would go with the sth2 bindings over the griffons. The sth bindings are reinforced with metal so you won't have to worry about the binding plate cracking like you would have to on the griffons. I have never used the griffons, but it seems like some people have great experiences, and others really hate them. I don't really see any pro using the griffons for pro comps, but I have seen many skilled and extreme pros using the sth bindings (both first and second generation) take a look at Gus kenworthy. He uses the sth2 bindings and it looks like they are holding up quite well. Also. The heel piece of the griffons stick up which might hurt your rear end after hard landings like the look px12's. (Have owned px12's and did not enjoy the pointy heel piece). The jester might be ok, but they are pricy.

I would favor an STH over most markers. If you are looking at the STH oversize (Z toe peice), the griffon in pretty comparable. Marker has a lot of hype around their products but in my opinion you are paying for a lighter weight downhill binding - with more plastic. The jester pro and duke are exceptions to this. One advantage to any STH binding over the griffon is the fixed AFD. When I skied the griffon, I felt the AFD shift around a bit when I was skiing fast, which is concerning if you are skiing aggressively. Jester pro has a fixed AFD as well. Salomon's driver toe peice offers huge advantages over the redesigned marker toe piece, in terms of practicality and durablity. It has an adjustable height and width, which means it meets with the toe of your boot consistently. Biggest complaint I hear about that toe piece is that if you ski it super hard the adjustable wings can losen up. Couple turns of a screw driver occasionally and you will be fine. I think it out performs the marker routinely.
