Repost - there was a huge thread on this ages ago.
As was discussed back then for every big name park skier they've lost they've picked up huge names in ski touring and ski mountaineering (people like Greg Hill and Andreas Fransson). Funnily enough that change has roughly coincided with them putting a much bigger focus on backcountry oriented projects and launching major new touring/backcountry ski, boot and binding lines like the Guardian and Quest etc.
It's not hard to work out that Salomon are consciously and actively pursuing the one market within skiing which has seen significant growth in the past couple years rather than pumping money into a market that's largely limited to younger skiers buying cheap park skis.
It's not just Salomon either but the industry as a whole. Look at the new touring oriented lines from K2, 4FRNT and a whole host of other companies.
