I am going to Australia in february and I'm planning to spend about 3 months there. I am going to travel around and stay in hostels plus possibly camping a bit, but i am looking to spend 4 to 6 weeks somewhere, preferably east coast to stay and work. Where is the best place to go to have a good time working and chilling for a young traveller?

Cable beach is sick, its in Broome Australia. Perth/Fremantle is pretty sop, I'd for sure put in a few days there. Go to Alice springs also, its a dope town near uluru. Also don't fuck with Vegemite, I saw it at my hostel and thought it was nutella...

i've been to perth/freo and broom actually! loved broome and perth is pretty nice. i'm mostly gonna be on the east coast of the country though. would possibly want to check out alice springs though

sydney is probably what youre looking for.

it has the most work available, good pay, good beaches and a reasonable night life. the girls are pretty good aswell. plenty of hostels to stay in while your working but cheap accommodation can be found if you give it a decent go

from there you can go up and down the coast. heaps to do so im not gonna list it just search it.

also if youre lucky you can try working in one of the hostels. at the bar or at receoption. its good pay, you'll get a room and you will meet heeeaps of people.


ps this year will be very hot

Okay sounds good thank you! I doubt i can afford to stay in sydney for the amount of time i'm looking at but maybe i'll spend more time then i was planning. And thanks for the heads up aha i'll come prepared

I was just there for a month and was in Cairns, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, and Wollongong. You HAVE to go to Cairns and see the great barrier reef. The rainforest there is pretty cool too. I would spend most of your time in Melbourne. Similar to Sydney just a way nicer city and there are some decent beaches in St. Kilda which isnt too far. Melbourne is just a cleaner and nicer city all around in my mind. There is an awesome hostel there Home @ the Mansion which is awesome. I highly suggest staying there. It is a lot of long term people who are there for a year or two and there is a really good vibe. Basically you can make friends easily there and then if you travel around for a week or two when you come back people are stoked to see you again. Byron bay is supposed to be the best beaches in the world but idk what the job market is like. PM me if you have any more specific questions. Be ready to drop a fortune on alcohol. Shits way too expensive there.

Awesome man thanks, glad you said that about Cairns cause i wasn't sure if i really wanted to bother going that far north but i'm hearing lots of great stuff about it. Also i may hit you up on that offer once I'm a little more organized.

ya i mean i wouldnt spend a lot of time there. The city is pretty dead but the reef you have to see while there and the rainforest is pretty cool too but not great (I have spent a lot of time in the amazon which is hard to top). but ya i mean not a very great city since there are really only maybe 2 or 3 streets worth walking down. Gilligans is the huge hostel there but its pretty loud and rowdy. I stayed at Travellers oasis. Really nice hostel but in a weird part of town on the other side of the train station as the rest of the town so a little walk maybe 10-15 minutes from the beach and cool areas. feel free to hit me up many time. Australia is an awesome place and the people are super friendly. Never hesistate to stop people on the street and ask for directions or advice on stuff and talk with people on the plane over if they are australian. I got some free food and rides from the airport just by holding a 5 minute convo with someone. Great place. Great people. Let me know if you need any more advice.

Goon (cask wine), is simultaneously the best and worst drink in the world, no backpacker in Australia is complete without a goonsack.

Other than that, I like Sydney more than Melbourne, and Byron Bay more than Sydney, but it really depends on what you are looking for. It is ridiculously expensive in Australia these days, so make sure you save up first, and then try hard to find a job to cut down on costs.

Gold coast is sick if you're into partying. The girls are super good looking there, but it's an incredibly superficial place. Sort of like Jersey Shore.

Byron is awesome, very relaxed atmosphere, but it's filled with trustafarians, who drive me nuts.

If you head to the north go to Port Douglas rather than Cairns. Cairns was pretty disappointing in my mind.

I went to Australia about 4 years ago to meet my 42 relatives. They were all splayed over Australia so I traveled to many different cities. The nicest city by far is Melbourne. It is a very culturally diverse city, more so than any other city I visited. The city is clean and the people are very friendly. The downside to Melbourne is that the bars close early. Nevertheless, a great culturally diverse city. Sydney also has great restaurants down by "The Rock", however is much less diverse. The city has many attractions, such as the opera house, harbor bridge, the olympic park, and my grandmother's house as well as amazing beach. Manly beech and Bondi beach to name a few, then you have towns just above Sydney like Wollongong that are also great surf spots. Just watch out for funnel web spiders, they scary. Ayers Rock is also very neat, however when I went it was over 40 degrees Celsius, and the bugs there are brutal. still a life changing experience. Darwin is hot and humid as fuck, don't go there. If you like to surf, Gold Coast (surfers paradise) is a brilliant spot. Cairns is also another beautiful place, right in the heart of the Great Barrier reef. You have to know when to swim there because of Irukandji jelly fish. Cairns also has great MTB riding!
