Help inner city kids learn to ski

Hello everyone,

I don't often make threads here but I thought this was thread worthy. This isn't another sway the vote or anything like that.  I volunteer with a program (not for profit) in Boston called Youth Enrichment Service (YES). The short and sweet is that we take kids (inner city) out to New England Ski Mountains and teach them how to ski.

So, all you have to do is go out to the website below, Click on Ted Ligety then click on Choose Team Ted (orange bar can't miss it). What happens is citi has set aside money to give to each athlete's charity. By clicking this you will send $5 to YES.

Stuff like this makes me really happy. It's very easy to do for anyone who is wonder, at first I thought I donate the money but then I realized that Citi does it just for clicking on that button. Easy Everyone help out!

I really feel that this is a pretty awful orginization though. While they certainly have a great intention, these kids have no right being out on the slopes. Putting poor, inner city kids into an environment more or less filled with very rich and upper class people is kind of innapropriate. Even if these kids love skiing or snowboarding, they will ultimately rarely if every be able to do it. Id much rather see these kids do something much more easily attainable for them in terms of location and cost to do.

i understand what you're saying but that's just one way to look at it

i think the idea in most cases here is less an attempt at getting these kids into skiing as a lifestyle sport and more as a one- or few-times trip to something much different than what they're used to. broadening their horizons, giving them a chance to at least try something they wouldn't normally

one trip to the mountains, one hike, one vacation can significantly affect you in a positive way and i think that's more of the focus here as opposed to what an organization looks to do when they buy inner city kids skateboards and basketballs
