Daron Rahlves responds to Tanner Hall's disparaging comments about ski racers

This November, World Cup downhiller Daron Rahlves has been trading some trash talk with new-school freeride icon Tanner Hall. Sitting in the lobby of a Beaver Creek hotel at this week's World Cups, Rahlves responded to some disparaging comments Hall had made in the pages of Freeskier Magazine. Here is some of what Rahlves said to assembled sports writers.


'He had some good things to say about how he loves skiing, and how he needs to thank his parents for giving him this opportunity. Which is great. That’s how most kids start, and it’s good to see the respect there. But the question was, what do you feel about Bode Miller making these multimillion-dollar contracts, and he’s like 'it’s b------ man,' and 'this man' and 'that man.' And 'downhill racing’s so easy,' and 'all you have to do is go top to bottom and there’s no changes in terrain.'

'Are you kidding me? If somebody’s going to be talking smack about something and putting something down, they should know. He’s not educated enough. He’s young, and he’s in his own little freeskiing world. To me, I think it’s great the way they expand the sport, and it’s something the industry must pay attention to. But jumping on rails is more like rollerblades. To me it’s not skiing. If you’re skiing, you’re taking stuff on the mountain and using natural terrain and stuff. These guys are impressive and they work hard to accomplish these tricks, but it’s the same thing over and over again.

'He says 'man' so many times in his interview, he should learn to be a man and respect those guys that have earned something. We get paid well because we’re obviously doing something for the sport. I pose a challenge to Tanner. I said 'I’ll hook you up with some downhill boards and you come up to Val Gardena or Kitzbuhel. And just make it to the bottom. That’s all I ask.' I gave him the dates. December 15-18 and January 21-23…

'I’m not claiming anything, and I’m not trying to put down freeskiing at all, because it’s a great part of the sport. But there’s a lot of respect that they should give us even if they don’t think it’s quite what they have. We’re out there doing what we can, and it’s not easy. I want to see him strap on some 215’s. He couldn’t even turn those things, couldn’t even ski a clean arc on those things.

'I think what Tanner Hall is getting to is saying that ski racers just go top to bottom racing gates and that’s it. Another thing he said was, 'you get me on a downhill and I’ll make it to the bottom, and I might not be as fast as these guys, but you put any ski racer in a pipe and he won’t even drop in.'

'That’s wrong. It’s wrong that he could make it to the bottom, plus it’s wrong that I wouldn’t drop in.'

Because the racer called Tanner out and will win any argument based on fact. Rahlves and Bode are both less cocky and better all around skiers than Tanner. Yes, T is driven and talented, but he would be embarassed skiing on big skis.

Both the racers have and will ski big mountains and hit jumps and do tricks, but if you were making a million a year would you spend tons of time learning tricks?

Why is it so fucking hard to show respect. I'd call you all childish little 12 year olds, but I know I'd get a post like, 'shut up, I'm 14'. Here's a thought, try something before you talk shit. Research who you are talking shit about, and for god sakes, lose the mentality that all racers are 'gay'. 'they wear tights...gay', if it didn't help them win, I doubt they'd wear them. By the same token, Tanner would not have the edges of his pro model rounded from the factory if it didn't help.

Watch the video about Rhalves posted on the previous page by ifsa_alum. Take the time to watch some skiing, it's not just racing, he even does a 3 over some rocks.

This thread and the one about snowblading are the reasons why people hate newschool skiing so much. Tanner's attitude doesn't help diffuse things either sometimes.

bode has a lot of class. a lot more than tanner. the only problem i have is when he says rails are the same thing over and over again. rails have a lot more variety than racing. that pissed me off. but, if you take a step back and forget the sports they're doing, i'd musch rather be friends with bode than tanner. i mean, i dont think racing is cool. ive never raced and ive never will. i dont like it. but ill give it props.

T Hall gives an awful image to the sport of freeskiing. There is no doubt that hes a sick skier but he is a scrawny punk bastard who comes from a rich upper class family and pretends to be angry. What does he have to be angry about? Nothing. He has no right to be hatin on ski racers just cuz they represent a different aspect of our sport. Do racers do anything to hurt the sport of freeskiing? All Hall does is create a bad image for our sport. We need a new poster boy like pollard or someone else who is mildly respectable

I say that skiing is awesome in any form. And no, snowblading isn't skiing...and that is another post. Who gives a shit whether you are throwing corked 9's or racing down Kitzbuhel at 90 miles per hour. Both require a shitload of skill demand equal respect. Hall will do anything to promote his badboy image. It is all part of his marketing ploy. I'm not saying Hall isn't damn good, but he is all anyone talks about bc he says stupid shit like this and it is getting old. Hardcore racers like Rahlves are Miller are badasses in their own right just like Hall and Pollard.

Tanner is one of if not the best freeskier out there. i think that if he really wanted to he could devote a little time to racing and in a short time he would be fucking nasty. i would love rahlves devote time to freeskiing because i can grantte that if they both spent time doing the others form of skiing that tanner would be about 50 times better at racing than rahlves would be at freeskiing. think about the progression of freeskiing over the past 5 years, and you can see a very clear difference. but look at the progression of racing over the past 50 years. they just go a little fast every year and not even noticeable faster. progression for races is shaving .2 seconds off their time. and all of you that dont support tanner in this little argument dont deserve to call yourselves freeskiers.

I don't think anybody contests the fact that Tanner Hall is an amazing skier. He's a role model to us all--on the mountain. I don't even have much of a problem with him off the mountain. BUT, TANNER IS NOT AN APPROPRIATE LABEL FOR OUR SPORT. People stereotype the freeskier as a dropout foul-mouth, to quote Meyer, and that's not cool.

It's the fact that Tanner is becoming the stereotype for us that's a problem, not the man himself.

This is so not good for the sport when daron and tanner are going back and forth, it's all skiing and they shouldn't be attacking each other like that. Tanner shouldn't have said what he did even though racing isn't doing much for the sport right now other than making people think skiers like to wear really tight pants.

Anyone who doesn't show respect really isn't keepin an open mind. Freeskiing only became legit because people began to respect it. Actions and words like Tanner will relegate our aspect of the sport right back to the fuckin doldrums.

You want proof? Take the ending of Freeze. Time Warner said loud and clear: we don't give a FUCK about Freeskiing. And believe me, Adidas (who owns Salomon) doesn't give a fuck either. They can make racing and grandpa skis forever and still turn profit. They're developing their first line of nordic skis right now and they are going to give Fischer a run for their money. I know, you're saying 'Why do I care?' Because they can dump everything freeskiing related and still make money. And that is their ultimate goal.

Don't bite the hand that feeds you. The only reason this sport exploded was because major corporations took a chance on Levinthal's brilliance. You want freeskiing to be just another fad? Keep talking shit.

bode making multi millions is ridiculous.... I mean just throw that much money into froming some austrian skiers and putting that much money nto tecnology and you wont see Bode anymore..

Yea going fast on 215 is hard and takes some ballz but going 120 km/h into a jump that throw you so high in the air is just as tecnical.

Every aspect of the sport takes major skills but yea giving so much money to one skier that only concentrate in racing is ridiculous

if he makes multi-millions, more power to him. we shouldnt judge people and say, hes making that much money and look what he does. because i think tanner probably makes more than a lot of doctors, and 99.9% of the world would rather have the doctor get the higher salary, but that's not how it works. sometimes it doesnt happen like it should.

I quit skiing when I was about 11 to snowboard. Why? Cause I got sick how skiing was it didnt seem to be going anywhere. All i saw was racers in tight pants dodging poles. I hated my gay ass Rossenigol skis and my grey and white boots. So for 4 years I snowboarded and had a lot of fun, I never got that good only 3's and rails and shit. Around 2003 I started seeing kids freeskiing in the park and I really respected them. So one day I downloaded Ski Movie 3 and after watching tanner's part I was so awed by his style and what he was throwing I demoed some 1080s a few weeks later. Kids at school said 'dont ski its so gay.' but i just ignored them and sold my snowboard and bought some AR5s. Now all I wana do is ski every day, every minute. So fuck you guys saying T is giving freeskiing a bad image, i'ts the compelte opposite, he's inspired a whole new generation and now those kids who said skiing 'is gay' resepct skiing.

yes going faster is progression, but comparing going slightly faster each year and how much freeskiing progresses in a year, its not even close. so before you go dissing other people think about what your saying. there is no way that the progression of the two aspects of the sport can be compaired. especially sence half of racing is due to what skies and wax people use. sur pro racers go a little faster every year, but its not even close to when pro freeskier learns a switch cork 10 then the next year he learns to spin that 10 going the other direction.
think about what you say before you say it. racing isnt doing shit for skiing. i know kids that have never seen snow but they say skiing is gay and that snowboarding is cool because the only veiw they have of skiing is that of racers in spandex suits.

When you think about the level that racers are competing at, where races are being won or lost by a matter of hundreths of seconds, and you compare this level of skill to the 'freeskiing' world, you will understand that even just 'going slightly faster' is more 'progressive' than doing a 270 on a quad-kink rail. Use your mind. Racing has been around much longer than freeskiing, so naturally, the level of progression will be slower each year because they are performing at such a high level. Before you start ignorantly criticizing people for their opinions, take a look at your own warped logic and realize that you are the one who is incorrect.

This thread isn't about why other people think skiing is gay. It's about respecting all aspects of the sport for what they are. It's about Tanner talking shit to a person who has dedicated his mind, body, and soul to his passion.

Why do you think Rhalves gets defensive when Tanner says his sport is bullshit? The punk attitude in freeskiing makes racers respond with comments like Rhalves'. It's a circle of hate that ends nowhere. Neither side is RIGHT for dissing the other.

The point is is that Tanner should have the maturity as a Freeskiing role model to not say things like he said. And THE SAME goes for Rhalves, though, you'll notice he approached the argument with more tact than 'it's bullshit, man.'

Instead of talking shit (no matter which 'side' you're on), you should consider respecting racing, freeskiing--ALL OF IT-- and everyone else should respect you. My point earlier wasn't about which sport progresses MORE than the other, but that BOTH OF THEM are progressing.

This post isn't about which sport is better. It's about not being a fucking prick.

Oh, and I thought about this post before I typed, just like the other ones. If you still disagree with me, you'll have to respond rhetorically, not by telling me to 'think first.'

Im just curious as to why people on here hate racers so much. Almost all freeskiers have a racing background. Racing makes you a better all around skier. Bode Miller can pull misty 7's and win downhil races going 60mph. I race, and i love it. Living in wisconsin doesnt always give me the opertunity to ski pow every day. So i race to simply get time on the snow. I will go in the park to work on some jumps because skiing runs here get a little borring. But when i got out west I never set foot in a terrian park.

Racers and park rats are extreme oposites but accually have more incommon then you might think. They both are so stuck up with their head so far up their ass they dont know whats going on around them outside of what they do. It seems like the only people that accauly know what skiing is about are the ones that ski the mountain. Maybe you should all be less conserned about what racers and park rats say and more about what you are doing, and in return that will make you a better skier

I never raced, but I wish I had the opportunity to when I was growing up. The guys I ski with now that are from a racing background are pretty easy to pick out. They are more contained and in control even when pushing it in sketchy terrain. A lot of professional skiers (big mountain and newschool) have their roots in racing, and it shows because their fundamentals are solid. T-hall really is acting like a child, and has forgotten anything he may have once known about racing. This should come as no shock since it's hard to grow-up/mature or remember anything while smoking the massive amount of pot that he does.
