Daron Rahlves responds to Tanner Hall's disparaging comments about ski racers

This November, World Cup downhiller Daron Rahlves has been trading some trash talk with new-school freeride icon Tanner Hall. Sitting in the lobby of a Beaver Creek hotel at this week's World Cups, Rahlves responded to some disparaging comments Hall had made in the pages of Freeskier Magazine. Here is some of what Rahlves said to assembled sports writers.


'He had some good things to say about how he loves skiing, and how he needs to thank his parents for giving him this opportunity. Which is great. That’s how most kids start, and it’s good to see the respect there. But the question was, what do you feel about Bode Miller making these multimillion-dollar contracts, and he’s like 'it’s b------ man,' and 'this man' and 'that man.' And 'downhill racing’s so easy,' and 'all you have to do is go top to bottom and there’s no changes in terrain.'

'Are you kidding me? If somebody’s going to be talking smack about something and putting something down, they should know. He’s not educated enough. He’s young, and he’s in his own little freeskiing world. To me, I think it’s great the way they expand the sport, and it’s something the industry must pay attention to. But jumping on rails is more like rollerblades. To me it’s not skiing. If you’re skiing, you’re taking stuff on the mountain and using natural terrain and stuff. These guys are impressive and they work hard to accomplish these tricks, but it’s the same thing over and over again.

'He says 'man' so many times in his interview, he should learn to be a man and respect those guys that have earned something. We get paid well because we’re obviously doing something for the sport. I pose a challenge to Tanner. I said 'I’ll hook you up with some downhill boards and you come up to Val Gardena or Kitzbuhel. And just make it to the bottom. That’s all I ask.' I gave him the dates. December 15-18 and January 21-23…

'I’m not claiming anything, and I’m not trying to put down freeskiing at all, because it’s a great part of the sport. But there’s a lot of respect that they should give us even if they don’t think it’s quite what they have. We’re out there doing what we can, and it’s not easy. I want to see him strap on some 215’s. He couldn’t even turn those things, couldn’t even ski a clean arc on those things.

'I think what Tanner Hall is getting to is saying that ski racers just go top to bottom racing gates and that’s it. Another thing he said was, 'you get me on a downhill and I’ll make it to the bottom, and I might not be as fast as these guys, but you put any ski racer in a pipe and he won’t even drop in.'

'That’s wrong. It’s wrong that he could make it to the bottom, plus it’s wrong that I wouldn’t drop in.'

i also think its humorous that they left out that T is also a sucessful entreapeauner(sp), hes not as dumb and ignorant as they think....plus im willing to be T is a much nicer guy than rahlves(ive chilled with T not rahlves so i dunno)

first of all i dont think either jibbing or racing is skiiing in it's truest form, skiing in it's truest form, to me, is skiing natural runs in the backcountry, BC booters are a little bit of a stretch but if its just a little addition to a smaller cliff or something thats ok with me, that being said, both of them are on polar opposites of skiing, and i think to truely compare both of their skiing abilities we would need to see them both rip nice turns in BC lines and also throw some tricks off of cliffs or booters, jumping is definitely a part of skiing and i think that rhalves would excell in the turning and skiing the big mountain aspect, where tanner would definitely excel at jumping, tanner would also be pretty good at making turns i would guess and rhalves could throw some shit off of the jumps probably, i would see them as even skiers, and rails just gives tanner's overall skiing ability a little bit of a boost, but then when you look at someone like pollard or abma, who both ski amazingly well on BC lines, and jump extremely well too, i would say that someone like abma or pollard is a better skier overall, including all of the aspects of skiing, than either tanner or rhalves, they both excel in their niches of skiing, but pollard, abma, and a few others transcend all of the aspects of being a good skier, so i say we let polar opposites like tanner and rhalves quibble, when the best overall skiers like pollard and abma shred shit up

-Tanner's allready jibbing on 191s. someone should tell rhalves that.
Ride1080 was right on. Tanner is just frustrated that his sport isn't being recognized for what it has done for the ski industry. He isn't making half of what Bode Miller makes and they are both busting their asses just as hard to stay at the level they are at. Rhalves and Tanner are both being stupid for arguing like this, but if rhalves does want tanner to ski a FIS course, it's only fair that he goes and does a urban rail with tanner. I want both things on film and then we'll decide.

these would be the categories in which i would judge skiing

Most Important: X1
Big Mountain Turns (i guess counts groomers, but who skis them anyway)

Semi-Important: X.5
Jumping (includes off of cliffs and Booters in BC)
Bumps

Not Too Important:X.25
Racing Turns (all types of racing)
Rails

So we would rate each skier per category from 1-10 then multiply the rating by the decimal next to it, the highest overall score would prove who would be the better skier.

I'm a little disappointed in Tanner lately. and I'm not too thrilled about him being the 'poster boy' of newschool skiing. Daron Ravhles could easily out ski Tanner in the big mountain scene. Have any of you seen Daron ski stuff besides chasing gates? He rips. And that is why this article is double edged. True, Tanner probably couldn't race down an ice covered hill. True, Daron probably couldn't boost more than 5 ft out of the pipe. If I were Ravhles though, I wouldn't have said anything about racing though. To make an impact, you have to say something revelent. And Ravhles gets a -1 for mentioning something irrevelent. I would love to see Tanner chase gates though, heck Jon did it in 1242...

I'm also tired of people dissing racers. It's very true, they do not widely accept newschool skiing. What they do though still takes skill. It's not our choice in skiing, but I think that we should at least respect them a little because most of them can ski powder/big mountain/(and people like Toby Dawson/Chris Hernandez/Jeremy Bloom..park) better than most people, including some pros.

Have some respect, it's all skiing. I think that both parties are wrong for dissing each's respective sport.

OVERALL = 16.5

Rhalves
8 x 1 = 8
3 x .5 = 1.5
6 x .5 = 3
10 x .25 = 2.5
2 x .25 = .5

OVERALL = 15.5

So I did these numbers off of the top of my head, but you should get my point, almost any way you do it they are going to come out about even, I think they are about as good of skiers as each other, they are just completely opposite types. If you did the numbers for Abma or Pollard though, i bet they would be higher than both tanner and rhalves by a decent amount.

i must say rahlves just made himself sound like a douche...hitting rails is like rollerblading...hes never hit a damn rail on skis. and he says skiing is about hitting natural stuff...there is absolutly nothing natural about a downhill course. or any other race course for that matter. the WHOLE DAMNE THING IS GROOMED. i have nothing against racing. or any other type of skiing. but rahlves sounds just as bad as he thinks tanner does.

if u read tanners interview not being taken out and peiced togethor, you can see that he has respect for the racers but thinks that he and everyother freeskier deserves just as much respect, whats wrong with that, rhalves goes and insults tanner personally and makes a bunch of ignorant remarks saying that newschoolers cant ski, yah they cant race as good as him but they dont dedicate their lives to racing

There was a time when i was younger when olympics nad downhill was skiing. I love watchin that stuff i got no hate for n e racer at all. I think Rhalves is completely right to go after tanner. I think it would be cool to see tanner in a downhill and Rhalves in the pipe or slopestyle it would be fun!!




Pete is currently sulking around Mt. Hood, shooting with Poor Boyz Productions and hitting on Kristi Leskinen. She hates guys, Pete lamented, so it’s not going good. Apparently Canada isn’t the only thing that’s tough for Pete to get into.

i think both daron and tanner said some ignorant things...i think tanner said more ignorant things than daron though..plus ive met daron..hes the nicest guy around...he deserves just as much respect as tanner or any other skier..its wrong to say which part of skiing is harder and bash on other skiers...skiing is skiing the sport will not progress with a civil war like this...learn to love the entire sport

it may be that tanner could have been talking about that the awsome big mountaion skiers(seth hugo treadway) should be getting paid heaps because they are skiinig hard terrain at the speed downhill racers go anyway

i used to race and i would say that racing is about the same but i reckon ylu need more balls to hit 120ft gaps and quad kinkers that are sourounded by cement.
but then again i could be wrong

This article was a completely misguided perception. It is ridiculous that Ralhves of all people can claim Tanner Hall as the close-minded and undiverse skier here. Racers are the ones after all that ski & train on the same course all day…and on ICY ones at that. I certainly don’t see it progressing into snowy all- mountain settings, that is for sure. (& considering that racing’s progression probably plateaued in the 1960’s). Racing is BIG in Europe, and guys like Darron and Bode are treated like rockstars over there (much more so than our freeskiing icons). And they get paid extremely well. But I know for a fact that Bode Miller is infuriated that he doesn’t get that same kind of acclaim/following here in the U.S. Maybe Tanner got his fame from big air and slopestyle jumping, but his true skiing skills / roots are no doubt very strong. They are completely unrecognized / underrated by most people, as well as the racer community. I think this goes for many of “newschool� skiers out there. The right image is being ignored here. And don’t forget that a lot of these freeskier names got their start in, and dropped, the sport of ski racing.
Maybe Tanner said “man� too many times in his interview, but I think he is completely correct. And I certainly don’t think that he is disrespecting skiing’s heritage. We will take over racing. Skiing is changing. No one can deny that kids are flocking to our sport (and away from the rigidity of racing) in droves. Media attention…largely through the X Games, has proved (and boosted) its popularity, and its driving racing out of the spotlight. Sales of twintips are on a massive increase, and I have no doubt that they will be driving ski companies agendas, much like racing has been doing, very soon. I hope that racers like Rahlves are threatened by this, because they are the ones with the lame attitudes, and this is the Future…and it’s only the beginning.

Sure you could make it, but can you do it at 80+ miles an hour? It's a different kind of skiing. GET IT THROUGH YOUR FUCKING SKULL! Tanner is a good skier, but there is no way he could compete with anyone on the top FIS circuit, as none of them could compete on the newschool seine. Herman Myer, for example, would destroy Tanner in the gates but get worked in the park. It goes both ways. There is no superior way to get down the mountain. This is as retarded as the skiing vs. snowboarding shit. Who gives a shit how you get down the mountain. You should respect the fact that they are riding in the first place. Fuck this pointless feud, and fuck one sided little kids like you.

Tanner could be infact the biggest hippicrit ever. Tanner once skied for a big company by the name of rossi, he then quit and wentw ith a much smaller independent company to represent his sport better by the name of Armada. Natrually he will not be paid as much because this is a much smaller company that sells far less skis then rossi. Now he complains that racers who are sponsered by huge ski companies like atomic and rossi get paid more then he does, by the way these races are also sponsered by huge car companies like GM and drink companies like Sobe.
Who does tanner think he is? Is he accually expecting to get as much money as a racer yet sell as much skis as a freeskier. If you want to support a 'new' sport with core companies then go right ahead, but if Tanner would accually think to himself and realize that the money is going to be less, O wait he droped out of school, why would he know that. I doubt it's the money he is looking for, he makes quite a bit of money alredy nevermind his wealthy background. It is more or less just the respect and support towards the actual movement.
All these big companies provide a ton of money for these big races, basically he just wants the same thing for freeskiing competitions. There aren't that many big competitions and that is due to the lack of interest from sponsors.

at the top level racing is insane, but at a small local mountain its boring and stupid so maybe thats why most of you dont understand how good you have to be to 'ski fast through gates'

see thats what im trying to get at. All these park skiers want to be independent and have core sponsers like Armada, 4frnt, Liberty, Line, Siver Cartel. Dont complain that the racers get big events because they have money. Go complain to yourselves becaues you choose to have your core companies which are smaller budgets who cant afford the big advertisments and the big money. Its your own choice to support the companies you want to. If they happen to have less money, be happy you are supporting them. Dont bitch because racers have more money, be happy because you have something special. Its all supply and demand, if you want to have big competitions, are you willing to fork out the Money. Here is a quick little chart i just made up to show you

Equipment Racers Freeskier
Skis $1,000 (SL) $500(park skis)
Skis $1,000 (GS) $600 (pow skis)
skis $1,300 (DH) $500 (Rail skis?)
Jacket $400 (Spyder) $300 (Oakley)
Poles $100 (sl) $50
Poles $100 (GS) -
Pants $150 (Spyder) $150 (Oakley)
GS suit $300 -
Helmet $150 $100
Goggles $100 $100
Boots $700 $400

Not to mention racers pay upwards of 1000 to join a race team, they pay for season passes, race camps and spend extra hundreds on training, wax, and fitting boots
Freeskiers pay for season pass and maybe a park pass at $15.

Now do you see why racers get more money from there sponsers and more comps and everything elnse. They make more money for the company. and until Tanner hall starts raking in as much money for his companies as Bode does then he can complain all he wants

I hate burst the bubble of those people above who are saying that DR had no right to say what he did... It was simply a retort. He was not the one who went on the offensive flinging blanket statements. I am a big fan of T Hall, but I am not going to back him on this one.

Ya when Ralvhes says everything in freeride is all the same it is pretty funny, apparently he hasn't watched many of his races on tape or something becuse racing sure as hell doesn't have a lot of variety.

the thing is some pros use like 190's in the park with a ski that is not even waxed and all. pros can easily do turns with perfect sidecut 215 skis, rahlves is gay cause tanner can easily go down, the hill, doesnt mean he has to do it as fast as possible

^ thats the whole point of racing. go down as fast as possible with the best line. Yes he was out of line saying freeskier (rails he was referring to) is the same. But you are just as wrong saying racing is the same.

What the fuck is the matter with you guys? You should be discussing the difference in their approach and in their arguments, not what size of skis they ride. That wasn't Rhalves' point.

His point is that Tanner shouldn't talk shit to PROFESSIONAL ski racers. My fucking grandmother 'can make it down the hill.' Downhillers exceed 75 mph plus while doing it.

The point is RESPECT and by saying the things he said Tanner has shown us how ingorant he is.

Remember: I don't give a FUCK how good he skis. He acts and speaks like a child and if he's not careful someone's gonna slap him around like one in the near future.

Speak like a moron and you'll get treated like one. I don't care how good he is or how well he has done as an entrepenuer. You don't get shit if you don't have respect, tact, and a bit of class.

Talking shit to racers who work their ass off every year to push the limits in their branch of the sport is just plain ignorant.

If I were Rhalves, I wouldn't have even responded. It's just not worth it.

I do wanna see if Tanner takes him up on the challenge though.
