Hi everyone, havent been on ns in a long time, are you all still trying to act gangster? just watched an edit and it reminded me of how un gangster skiing is and how dumb it looked when people dressed like thugs. i myself am no exception to acting like a "gangster," just wondering if that still occurs.

Good question, and yes of course.

Slumdog Illionaire was just such a dope edit, people will want to emulate that... this is the track used. (what Rasta thing has THall done that's come close to it?)

But in the end people will just work off whatever's around.. and works for them.

Anyway, I think if I put together an edit tomorrow, I'd use one of the Flava in Ya Ear Remixes to back some of the illest skiing you could possibly imagine. Biggie even says:

Right, skiers aren't known to go from Compton to Apen, but you have to appreciate the music and the realness of the "rhymical-creative-survival" force. Same force pushing freeskiing? Hood is where it's at, beats+freestyling. The only thing lacking in my view to complete the picture is the b-boying. I'm sure there's tons of African-American folk who'd turn current freeskiing into a wasteland if they had the opportunity.

Honestly, I think most park rats don't associate tall clothing with being 'thug' at all. I think they associate it with skiing, which would explain all the little park kids wearing tall shit off the hill. They love skiing, and they want that to be their identity. I don't know, I guess I just think its important for us to remember that the clothing style sure as fuck didn't go streets of LA-->hills of the east coast. It went through skateboarding, snowboarding, and probably lost a lot of its social context on the way.

This. It's just someway for park rats to separate themselves from the gapers. They need a way to identify themselves from everyone else. Are they trying to be thug? Probably not. It's just a trend. And i don't go to hoods too much, but do people who gangbang still wear baggy shit? I feel like it would be a lot more swagfag looking now

If you look at original hiphop as:
MCing (rapping) + Turntables + B-boying (breakdancing) + Graffiti

which was super creative... and fresh... often done as a way to avoid gang life and criminality.

But then you look at what it morphed into where you see the predominance of Gangster-rap much later in the piece .... for a number of reasons... (not saying this was bad at all.) But, what I'm thinking about is how to make skiing more inspired by hiphop and its creativity rather than just the thug element that overtook it. So to do that, I think it makes sense to look at Bboy style as a fresh inspiration (and the hiphop movement as a whole,) rather than just thug life and the thug attitude... but still being in touch with the beats.

Anyhow, Biggie claims he first started rapping on the street solo as a way to feed his family.

But really you have rappers doing it for all kinds of reasons... same with skiing... all kinds of reasons.. but I'd like to see it go as trill as possible (well at least for me personally)... and for me its about creativity and style and nothing to do with retarded attitudes and frontin... and even caring what people think.. especially if it's wrong and absolutely when it's ill-willed.

Have a look at this Biggie interview as food for thought:

1:22 - Don't be a stupid rapper. A stupid rapper is a motherfucker that has someone else tell them what to do, which is not always wrong, but if it's something you feel like you don't have to do, you really have to question it and find out why they want you to do it.
