Replying to Outrageous Prices

I got a MacBook Pro about a month ago and now I'm looking for a good editing software. Jimmy Leslie uses Final Cut Pro X and I love his work but it's $300. Not that it's unaffordable but I don't want to spend my money on something I might not even like. Sam Zahner, I love his work as well, he uses Adobe Premeire but that's $40 a month. So the question is; are there any good cheap editing softwares or are they all outrageously priced?
