Dont care. NYC resident here. Smoking is a pathetic habit, especially when you kids do it to be "cool". Takes days off your life and you smell like shit. On top of that there expensive as fuck.

Ok, I don't smoke either, but people have the choice to if they want. This is on par with emperor Bloomberg's attempt to ban high capacity sugary drinks. It's also only absurdly expensive in NYC and surrounding areas.

^ Dumbest shit ever. Also I feel there is a certain point where people become big boys and big girls. If you become an adult when you turn 18 you should be an adult. Then again the government is like a mom with the seatbelt laws, helmet laws etc.


If you're considered an adult, you should be able to take on those responsibilities. Are people going to drink and smoke at age 18 if they're able to? Of course but that's part of being an adult. Making those big boy choices. You aren't going to have you mom there for ever backing your lunch and doing your laundry. At some point there has to be some personal accountability. If somebody is an adult and wants to do something that will have an negative impact on them, it isn't the governments job to step in and play mom. As long as it isn't interfering with other peoples lives it should be left alone.


If you want to smoke cigs, eat nothing but cake and ice cream, skip work, drive without a seat belt you should be able to. Besides, there's been plenty of shit legislation that's been passed with the supposed intent to "save our children".


Oh well. Same as it ever was'd.

You should be against it because this is just another infringement on people's freedoms. If someone wants to kill themselves slowly by smoking, they should be allowed to make that personal choice.

Governments have a responsibility when it comes to legal ages. Alcohol has affects on younger brains that either do not occur in adults, or are of less significance to adults.


I think their sample size was marginally too small, with the number of kids who drink and want the money from a study it shouldn't have been difficult to get a larger sample. Questionable ethics though...

See, I would totally support this logic if second hand smoke didn't exist. But it does, so by smoking you're hurting others in your vicinity who don't care to develop lung cancer.


Now if the law was changed to absolutely no smoking of tobacco in an public areas or in areas adjacent to schools/daycares/community centres/etc I'd be totally for having the age to buy cigs at 18.

exactly. I have no problem with anybody smoking in their own home, but outside of that, chances are much higher that it will impact somebody else and that's not alright

well no shit the majority are not 18-20. A kindergarten student knows that 3 years is less that 60+ years.

18-20, however, id almost certainly the age range where the vast majority of smokers start smoking. give or take a couple years. So making it difficult to get cigarettes in that age range when you're most vulnerable to start smoking seems like the logical thing to do.

Why is this law relevant to the amount of second hand smoke in the world?

Did people ever think that the age you're allowed to buy cigarettes at might be the age a lot of people start smoking at? Also what the fuck does that have to do with anything. IF you're an adult you should be able to smoke cancer, drive without a seatbelt, etc.

There are a shit ton of more important issues the government could be dealing with. Instead the government is one giant clusterfuck after another.

That's why I'd rather support a ban of smoking in all public places then raising the smoking age, since I think an adult should be able to do whatever he/she wants to their body, but if a ban of smoking in all public places isn't going to happen then raising the smoking age is a good start since it will 100% lower the overall percent of the population who smokes since once people get beyond the 21ish age then they really are much less affected by peer pressure and have much better life judgment calls and are much much less likely to start smoking run on sentences are fun.
