Prescribed adderall problem

Do i have a problem? Ive been prescribed and taking adderall almost everyday i goto since 2nd grade probably 95%, im a junior now with pretty decent grades 2.95 gpa but i literally can not do any school work at all without it if i goto school with out it ill do nothing productive all day and for me to do homework i need to come home and take a smaller does 10mg ive also progressively been prescribed higher and higher doses over the past few years im at 30mg in the morning each school day.
Anyone in similar position

you probably would have been fine without adderall quite honestly. Your grades might have suffered for a while, but once you get used to working with it and forcing yourself to do things, it wears off.

Not really, you're fine. Tolerance builds up as you take it over the years, like with any drug.

If you're addicted to it, then yeah you have a problem. I've been taking a different ADHD med for probably 8 years now and I can't function without it, but that was a problem before I started taking meds.

Not being able to study is why you took them in the first place. No shit you can't focus if you don't take it.

When you take adderall, it causes large amounts neurotransmitters to efflux out and bind their receptor giving you that concentrated feeling. However, since you have been on adderall so long that your brain has now downregulated and desensitized the receptors in your brain for serotonin, dopamine, and norepinehrine. What that means is now you have to take higher and higher doses to get that same level of concentration that you had when you were on lower doses as a kid. So when you don't take your adderall there is a serious depression and lacking in those neurotransmitters i mentioned earlier. As a result, you have no feeling to do anything and lack an kind of motivation to work on school work.

That's only if you aren't ADD or ADHD. I took it everyday for 12, and I mean every day. I probably didn't take a total of 40 times in 12 years. Never got used to it because there is a deficiency of those neurotransmitters which causes ADD. I know this shit. It's my mom's job and my life and I've had to deal with idiots all my life telling me ADD doesn't exist. I know how this shit works

I don't take it that much anymore. I stick to tea or coffee. Caffeine has the same effect as adderall to someone with ADD but it's usually lesser. I only take it if I have projects or some shit that I can't focus on my own without some help.

Aidan-G  i thought you would be smart enough to know that ADD doesnt exist biologically anyways, and in that case it becomes the result of a different mental condition, ADHD might but there's also not a lot of biological evidence. taking amphetamines regularly can and will desensitize neurotransmitters, but in cases like yours you may have stopped at an age where the transmitters can regenerate

That's like Schizophrenia doesn't exist. Just because we can't take a test that definitively proves it doesn't mean it's not real. "Oh people feel paranoia normally so paranoid schizophrenia must just be people complaining." This is the shit that makes me angry. You guys have no idea how easy you fucking have it. When you want to focus you can. When I want to focus without meds I get amazingly strong headaches and shut down. Don't you think I would have grown desensitized when I took it roughly 4,400 times consecutively? And you know how you find out who has ADHD versus those in the general population? Give them the med. If they have ADHD it'll be pretty obvious especially in kids. If they don't they'll be all amped up like they just had a couple of redbulls. Just because you read somewhere it doesn't exist. The only people who think it isn't real are the people who don't have or have never had a kid with it.

I have no medical background but here's my opinion.

It's hard to diagnose addictions, usually it's a combination of factors. A big questions is have you tried to quit multiple times and found yourself unable to? Is it negatively affecting your health and relationships?

As for ADD/ADHD I think it's all bullshit. Humans, especially children, evolved running around in the wilderness for years and only very recently have developed inventions (such as language or writing) that would require them to sit and 'focus' on something for a long time. Only in our short-lived current time period, are children (and some adults) expected to sit at a desk and focus on work for 8+ hours a day.

In my opinion you should stop taking your medicine. You have control over you ability to focus. You may want to go off and do something else but force yourself to sit and study. Being able to study for long periods of time is like lifting weights. If each day you study for longer and longer periods of time you can build up a tolerance and be able to study for hours upon hours without taking a break.

I'm the same way. Been taking it for 11 years (4th grade). Makes me just realize that I am prescribed it for a reason. And would be dropping out of college. I don't like taking it, but its ncessary and something I have to live with

i dont think any 2nd grader has a great ability to focus, but when you give them what is essentially meth they defintely do, so saying that because ADD medicine works on you means you have ADD is the craziest shit ever when you have been given it since you were young and you are clearly addicted

Learn to focus without it first. I used to take adderall and it made me a fucking mess, to be honest. I was all depressed and shit. I stopped taking it for a while, Tried concerta and its much better. Whenever I need to refill my script, I just wait a few weeks or so. Weed is pretty good, too. Not even kidding, either. I've had ADD/HD my whole life and its really mellowed me out.

My doctor told me that adderral basically doesn't go 'deep enough' for lack of actually knowing the chemistry behind it to be very addictive like methamphetamines are. If you can't function without it and you can when you take it then take then take the pill.

Aidan-G. Thank you god. One person that isn't ignorant. I got diagnosed ADD the second semester of my junior year of college. Found out I actually had it really, really bad, but intelligence was compensating. Got to harder classes in college and I just couldn't handle it. The medication is like a godsend, not only in school, but in every aspect of my life.

When idiots tell me that "Oh everybody has ADD to some extent," or "oh it's not even real, its people who abuse the system." No. Fucking morons. It is a genetic deficiency in receptors for neurotransmitters that do not allow afflicted individuals to focus, form ACTUAL long term memories near well enough, have slower processing speed, and more. "Oh, well thats just your opinion." No its scientific fact you blithering fuckwad.

Not everybody is ADD, its called having a lack of god damn discipline. When doctor's prescribe it to people without any form of psychologic testing, I find it total bullshit, and the main reason it's 90% of the time an incorrect diagnosis. Whatever.

im legitimately curious how doctors find out people have said deficiencies in receptors for neurotransmitters. because from the way you describe these deficiencies, im sure you see its easy for people to make the case, and argue that yes indeed not all people were created equal and some people will be naturally worse at processing speed, focus, etc

the difference between disorders like ADHD and Schizophrenia is that ADhD doesnt have the same rate of functional impairment that Schiz has, and the percentage of people with ADD that do have functional impairment (which is very few) do probably legitimately need some help, but non necesarrily with drugs, CBT(cognitive behavioral therapy-counseling) would most likely suffice in most situations, schizophrenia's prevalence also hasnt gone up 15x in the last 20 years as with ADHD

in the new DSM-5 they came up with a disease called Disruptive Mood Disregulation Disorder, that is characterized only in children 6-18 years of age,
A: "severe recurrent temper outbursts manifested verbally and/or behaviorally that are grossly out of proportion in intensity or duration to the situation or provocations
B: The temper outbursts are inconsistant with developmental level
C. the temper outbursts occur, on average, 3 or more times per week
etc

Basically it is for snobby kids who's parents have not taught to behave themselves, a perfect example of how ADD came into existence with the DSM-IV years ago, required symptoms are lessened hence more people are diagnosed, now a bunch of parents think their child has a psychological disorder and seek treatment other than CBT if they cannot handle parenting

I dont think ADHD completely doesnt exist, but i think 90% of the people who think they have some serious issued dont

My teachers spoke with my parents in 3rd and 4th grade because I always had the highest test scores on standard testing but would never sit in my seat in class and would just dicka round in the classroom. I literally couldn't sit in my seat for more than 15 minutes at a time without getting bored to go walk around and shit.
They thought ritalin would help, and I got testing done at a psychiatrist with some weird test, and what do you know, it helped. It fucked me up bad thought - I would be up until 2 and 3am most nights from it, and lost weight like crazy; I was just a kid.
I got prescribed it and would hide the pills under my seat or throw them away because I hated it. I don't like it and I still don't, but I just can't work to my fullest without it. I've accepted the fact I have some sort of chemical deficiency and theres nothing I can do about it. I've always asked the doctor 'why me. why do I have these problems. why do I have to take these pills' and all I was ever told is that it makes me 'normal'. I don't like it, but I sacrifice being able to be normal and act out for being able to focus in school and operate like everyone else. People think these pills are a blessing, or its 'so awesome having adhd because you get free pills' and it fucking sucks. It's a curse.
Its frustrating getting shit from people like you who tell you to just stop being a pussy and live without the pills, as if I hadn't tried to get off these and have a normal life. Going to different psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors and tutors. I'd give up everything to be able to focus and work without having to take this shit.

You arent tested for the presence of these receptors and all that. You take academic-like tests that are designed to determine whether your processing speed, memory, attention span, and other things like that are all similar. If you test into the 99th percentile in memory and the things NOT based on attention, but then on all tests requiring attentive capabilities you score below the 10th percentile, you know there is an issue.

However, research has been performed that shows deficiencies of biogenic amines and/or receptor problems that lead to attentive issues. Depression and Schizophrenia are actually caused by VERY similar issues in the brain, but in different areas. However, both depression and schizophrenia are accompanied by decreased attention/ability to focus. Partially due to the symptoms of these diseases, but also because of the specific neurotransmitter defect in the brain. No, I didn't Wiki all this. I've asked my doctor directly, and studied all of these disorders on a molecular basis in Neurobiology, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, and Neurophysiology.

and if you read my post you would see it didnt have anything to do with most of what you just said, some people actually do face severe behavioral functional impairment and are unable to focus without the help of drugs, some as in a small percent of people diagnosed with add, which you could hypothetically be a part of

not tryin to hate on kids with ADD but like theres no physical difference between people people with and without it. Its the most misdiagnosed disease and studies show that anyone can get an adderal/ADHD script regardless of whether they have the symptoms or not. I just wish it were legal so everyone could use it but regarding your problem id imagine you're concentration skills may be fucked if you've been using amphetamines since grade 2 to perform better in school. in my opinion amphetamines are a way to get around developing good study habits in grade school because i know a good amount of kids who can hardly function without it

add/adhd definitely exist, i know nothing about this shit but one of my friends is batshit crazy when he stops taking his meds, no doubt in my mind.

adderall is fucked though, gets you fucking zonked (not surprising people take it to party) compared to concerta types
