Dear NS,
There is a proud history of internship
within the ski industry. Most of us
probably remember the couple summers when Voleurz commissioned some
unsuspecting French kid to do their bidding – which largely translated into
getting tail-tapped by Max Hill at Camp of Champions. The Line Travelling Circus periodically and
inexplicably inserts their intern Michael into episodes, usually incorporating
some degree of deprecation and humiliation.
It’s true, behind the scenes of virtually all of your favourite brands
are strung-out peons scuttling around sending invoices and kissing ass. Newschoolers – as the be-all-end-all of
skiing anywhere, period – is thus unacceptably behind the times when it comes
to exploiting unpaid student labour.
That’s where I come in.
Hi. My name is Sam; I’m nineteen years old, bright eyed and embittered. I hail from the rainy shores of Vancouver, British Columbia but these days call Montreal home. I study English at University, but school is dumb and life is short. You may have encountered me on BroBomb.com but then again you probably haven’t, because you probably aren’t over 25, angry at the world or socially inept. I’m here at NS because I have a borderline obsessive relationship to skiing and a deep-seated sense of cynicism and penchant for irony which, these days, seems to be unfortunately lacking when it comes to sliding down mountains on glorified 2bi4’s. It’s no secret that people take themselves too seriously. I certainly do. But more importantly, the entire ski industry takes itself too seriously. It’s the cruel paradox of branding, corporatizing and marketing something that is in its very essence – in its fucking name! – free. I’m here to remind you to keep an open mind first and foremost, and to check that you don’t lose sight of what’s important. Oh, and also to shine Mousseau’s shoes, fetch coffee, and cater to the every whim of those above me.
To accomplish this, to spread the gospel of good vibes, humility and freeskiing, I’m going to be teamed up with Mousseau on a number of projects. In the spirit of democracy, I also want to hear from YOU (the proletariat). I want to bring you the what’s-what of freeskiing without bullshit or strings attached – so let me know what you want to read (sorry folks, my talents begin and end with the written word. Get your fill of visual stimuli somewhere else). I just want to have fun and share in the fundamental joy of skiing, because that’s why we’re out here, right? It’s the way of the road Bubs, if you’re afraid of telling it like it is then you’ve got no business being in business. How’s that for overstepping my bounds? Thanks Newschoolers, now let’s go lighten up.
Also, I intend to wield my newfound mod powers with abandon. Be warned, ye!
