Doc just told me I won't be able to ski this season.
already had surgery helped for liked a year then dislocated it 2 more times. I do have a job but I currently pay for my college so i'm kinda broke. and I have health insurance but it doesn't cover emergencies 100% which in the last 2 years i've been in the ER like 3 or 4 times plus surgery which still cost like $1500 with insurance.
Really? I'd go get another opinion ASAP. If you really did just tear your meniscus and nothing else (ACL, MCL, PCL etc) it's really not that serious. The meniscus is just like a shock absorber, it does nothing structurally for your knee. I tore mine up last fall, rode a few days on it, had surgery in December and was back on the snow the first of March. It's a really easy surgery.
Agreed - I'm no doctor but I do know that generally meniscus tears are pretty mellow. They're not like ACLs which take ages and ages to heal. It surprises me that tearing your meniscus in October would take you out for the entire season. Get a second opinion and who knows, maybe you can get out west after you graduate after all.
so stop going to the hospital, and just pop it back in yourself. (hey that's not a dislocated shoulder that's a AC separation, I know but I never took a picture when it's been dislocated.)
first time I did it I had no idea what i did all i knew was that my shoulder was in excrusiating pain. 2nd and 3rd time i was with family and they wanted me to go to the hospital. 4th and 5th time got it in by myself no hospital needed. but this last time I tried and tried to get it back in but it wouldn't. the doctors at the ER couldn't get it back without sedating me. I'm just gunna start hitting the gym pretty hard and seeing how much that helps.
So to clear things up, this doc is one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the area so I trust his opinion. He told me there were esentially two types of meniscus tears, one in which there is a "flap" of the meniscus and they can just cut it off and be walking in a few days, or it can be a tear which they repair it and the recovery is much longer. I had surgery last Wednesday and when he cut it open he ended up doing the latter repair, which has a recovery time of 6 weeks on crutches, but in turn it saves more of my meniscus for 40 years down the line. Anyways he suggested that I don't ski until march but we will see how my recovery goes.
I literally could not walk at all after I tore it, so I knew it was pretty bad. Some people have had less serious meniscus tears and been able to go without surgery at all, so it's really situational apparently. Anyways I have some pictures of the surgery scope so I can post them later.
Dude, I'm sitting on the couch right now nursing a busted meniscus. Old mate up there is right^ you have surgery on that bad boy and it's 4-6 weeks recovery. Nothing!! Did you find your doctor in a back alley?
I got my meniscus repaired in July and I was on crutches for a couple days. The whole recovery took about 3 months with 6 weeks in the full leg brace. It's not as bad as it seems
To all the people suggesting the doctor is an idiot or a pussy...he has to recommend the longest possible recovery time to cover his own ass. If he said, "Yup, you'll be good to go in 3 weeks" and then OP reinjures his knee the first day out, it calls the doctor's judgment into question. Whether or not the injury was OP's fault is irrelevant at that point, because it looks like the doc gave a poor recommendation and is opening himself up for a suit.
I had my meniscus and ACL repaired end of May, it was 4 weeks on crutches no weight bearing due to the meniscus. It sucked but 4 weeks isn't a whole long time in the grand scheme of things. It is different for everyone though.
that seems really extreme. 4 months for just a meniscus is almost as long as a ACL recovery, and the meniscus is supposed to be 2 months max. if they repaired it, its no weight on it for 4 weeks, then normally like 2-4 weeks until you are back at 100%. plus if you tear it again after they just remove the torn part and you are good in like a week.
if you already had surgery, i am assuming you are going to pt (if you aren't, START. it's crucial to the recovery). ask them for a second opinion. when i fucked up my knee i was initially told a meniscus tear and the first orthopedic i went too told me it would be 2 months max until im 100% if it was repaired. it ended up i didnt have a ACL too so they just took out about a quarter of my lateral meniscus, which isnt that big of a deal. and i was walking on it after like 4 days
I got my surgery July 18th. They repaired it and I spent 3 days on crutches. The total recovery was three months though. Definitely keep up on pt though. I still go in weekly to maintain.
I can't quite remember. I know that the doctor went it and tightened my shoulder muscles, restricting my range of motion. Bankart repair sounds most familiar though.
