Finally having menu bars on dual screens is fucking fantastic. Saving with tags seems interesting. Auto update for apps like iOS7. Haven't had much time to dig around though.

I've never actually had any problems with it until ML brought the multiple internal desktops/screens/whateveryounamethem.

Before that it was simple but flawless.

because they constantly get shit on for offering "updates" at a cost.

I gotta wait for the hackintosh guys to patch it before installing on my desktop, might put it on my laptop though!

Nobody else is having install issues? It tells me I can't install on the disk that is used to start up my computer. Which is odd, cause that's the only disk in here...

It's partitioned to run linux on the other boot, but still, what's up? I have my install disk, so I can boot off that and install on the hard disk I suppose. Kinda annoying.

Its very similar, the tabs in finder are cool and my boot up from sleep is definitely faster than it used to be.

figured, my hard drive is so fucked... I need a new one. My download will get to 3gb then revert back to 0, yes I know it's my hard drive... it does weird things like this ever since I first installed mountain lion a year ago and had some major problems.


anyone have a recommendation for a hard drive? I know I need a certain size but am thinking about upgrading from my 250GB I have now to maybe 1TB. is around 100-150 dollars what I can expect to spend?

I'd recommend a 240gb or 256gb SSD drive. You seem to be okay with that size of drive and its completely worht it. You can grab a 240/256 for $200 or less now and if you want more space I saw a samsung 500gb SSD for $300 on newegg the other day. It wont be the fastest SSD but that hardly matters (its like comparing an olympic 1st place sprinter to the olympic 4th place sprinter and your old HDD being a highschool freshman sprinter).

need to clean my hd, so once I have time (aka end of semester) I am going to copy everything to my external, wipe it, and then do a fresh install, then download whatever I need to get mavericks going, then bring back what I need. Does look cool though.

You need to upgrade to snow leopard first and then you can go straight to Mavericks I believe.

Just installed.

Two days ago I got a second monitor, and I was a bit disappointed with the multiscreen functionality of OSX. It worked well, but lacked functionality. Maverick's multiscreen functionality is much much better.

According to this link, you can install Mavericks over Leopard by doing a clean install, and booting from an external drive with the Mavericks installer on it. Better than paying $20 for SL.

its probably free because it doesn't have enough new stuff to justify charging people for it. whatever ill download it because its free, which is a smart move on Apple's part because its getting its new stuff out to everyone.

gotcha. pretty sure this old 2008 macbook pro has an HDD, no wonder it's so slow. Not to mention I'm pretty sure the disk is fucked (not entirely but enough to not be able to do most major osx updates n such).

do you know of an example or specific brand of SSD I should be looking for? I know it needs to be 2.5" x 9.5mm SATA, but there are so many brands and makes I have no idea which to chose.

Oh yeah, definitely has a 5400rpm drive, very slow.

BUT don't expect this ssd to just make your computer brand new again, it will boot fast and open programs fast but overall performance wont increase.

Here are some drives I'd recommend.

These OWC mecury drives are top notch, very reliable and OWC has great customer support and lots of tutorials to help you install their products, only kick is their drives are $10-20 more expensive then some ssds you can find on newegg/b&h

I just got the 120gb for my hackintosh in my desktop and it works great, the 240gb is only $220.

A different, less expensive option would be something like this:

Overall, if price isn't a huge issue, id recommend the OWC. The scandisk 256 is a great choice, the one I posted are slower versions but they don't make a huge difference and they're $20-40 cheaper.

Thanks! Definitely know what to look into now. I don't need a huge performance upgrade, I just need it to actually work properly unlike my current HDD haha, and if it boots up faster that's just a plus!

I mean you could cheap out and get another 500gb drive for like $100 bucks but I'd highly recommend getting an SSD.

TBH you should set a budget, and then look at the most purchased/reviewed SSD on newegg...are you familiar with re-installing os x?

Oh yeah. I have almost all the previous versions on an external drive. Not my first time reinstalling on a fresh drive, I've just never replaced the it before.

I'm gonna spend the extra money for an SSD though, HDD is pretty ancient technology isn't it? Haha

yeah ssds will be standard soon. Only the basic 13" has an HDD now and its pretty cheap to get a fusion drive on the iMACs too. Can't wait for like two years from now when 1tb ssds are cheap ha I remember my first mbp had a 120gb HDD and its funny to think now I have a 240gb ssd and it feels way too small ha

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Just read through all that which led me to a few more questions. I'm in that exact scenario (ever updated IOS). I also haven't purchased an external HD yet which is killing me here.
So if i do it the "original way"and pay $20 for the download of snow leopard can i DL that straight off the web and update my iOS without having to back anything and my shit will all stay on here the same?

I think I understand how to get the new update from there but is that how I can get snow leopard the easiest? Not really tryna do all that tricky bullshit.

Ever since Lion came out, I'm scared to update my OS because expose is so damn useful, and mission control is garbage. As someone still running Snow Leopard without any problems, I ask: what do I have to gain from upgrading?

Just downloaded it.

Still trying things out, but it doesn't seemed like much changed. Oh well it was free and needed an update.

With the updates to safari does anybody know if it runs better than chrome now? I saw something that said " In that benchmark, Apple's browser got the best score: 137.7ms, compared with 171.8ms for Firefox and 153.5ms for Chrome (lower numbers are better)."

It's definitely faster than the ol' Snow Leopard was. I got a bit worried though, because when I first started it up, it was insanely slow. But now it's good. The reverse scrolling thing is going to take some getting used to, but it makes sense. And my customized flat 2D-dock is gone, and I don't remeber how I got it.

^yep just change the directional scroll to/from natural.

I just found out you can swipe two fingers left/right to go back and forward
