Ski rack or box?

I'm looking for a way to quarry my skis and my friend skis during the winter but i'm not sure what to get. I'm worried that with a ski rack my skis are going to be all dirty but the box cost more money and it affects your gas mileage. I live 40 minutes away from the hill so would it be that bad on gas? So ns what should I get?

Do this but with with your skis instead of tin cans. If they don't survive the ride they weren't durable enough anyway.

Ski rack. My skis dont get dirty up there. If it snows they get a nice covering but thats it.

There's nothing wrong with a ski rack.

Better than a box IMO. It christens your skis into the cold weather, and readies them for the day of steep and deep they're about to endure. Your skis aren't going to get dirty unless you're driving a fkn Smart Car.

If money isn't an issue get a box. But if you're broke like me a rack is fine, mine gets the job done except when you're following an asshole with ice built up on their snowmobile trailer and it flies up in the air and hits your rack and skis almost completely destroying it

Get the box. When you go on road trips you can put a lot more up there and free up space in the care. Also I've have multiple experiences with ski racks popping open on the highway. Never had a roofbox fly off.

If you can afford the box, go with that. Racks get the job done, but boxes are more versatile and you can use them for anything if you don't have room in the car.

skiing is gross anyways. you are going to get them dirty anyways. rack...it's cheaper.

Ski racks murder your mileage as well, it's going to happen regardless. Between the ski rack and snow tires, I lose close to 7 mpg.

Exactly this. Boxes are expensive but it's totally worth it if you're gonna be using it all the time. So much more functional

I have a ski rack and my dad has a box. For purely skiing I prefer the ski rack, it's alot quicker to get in and out of and mine has never come open. However if you plan on using it for anything other than skiing then the box is definitely worth it. I'd make my decision based on your use of it if I were you because a ski rack is more than good enough for just skiing use.

Box box box

I have had 2 different thule racks break mid highway drive, throwing my skis right onto the highway. I know for a fact this was not user error, racks break.
Box is good for throwing other shit up there too

Box for days......no wait years. Have a tule box and i managed to fit four pairs of skis, three snowboards, two longboards, and a street deck all in a box. The rack is limiting and i know the box is durable as hell.i have had the same box for eight years and havent had durability issues. The lock sometimes gets jammed or frozen but you manage to figgure it out.

I've had both and say for sure go with the box!! Stays in much better and you can put more in it than just skis and very thing stays dry. Had to many skis fall off on the highway from usin racks

Overall I'd go with a box. You can put a bunch of stuff along with skis in it and it will protect your skis from grime off the road, especially salt.

You can put stinky boots in a box, that said I have a rack and have used one for the last few years, it works just fine, I would rather use a box but financially a rack makes more sense for me

Box all the way. I can fit so much shit in my box it's not just for skis. When I'm moving shit around or have a bunch of friends and gear I can pack my box with so much stuff.

I picked my box up for $100 pretty much brand new of craigslist. Look for a used box and you'll be set.

just get a rack if it is for skis
if you want a year round soulution and don't have a lot of space for luggage get a box.

thule is my fave.

Box is nice like other mentioned for extended road trips, and not just for skiing but camping gear, ect.

Keep in mind a box will lower your MPG a bit. I've been keeping my eye out for a cheap box but my ski racks works too... last year I didn't end up putting them on my car since I have an outback and just threw all my shit in the back with a seat folded down...

i say ski rack because i have never needed the exrtra room and because the box apparently decreases fuel efficiancy
