Watched the whole thing. Helmets are awesome. I wish I had worn one for ever. I've done some pretty bad shit to my brain over the years. You don't think about it but even all those smaller concussions can add up after a while.
Looking at new helmets for this season. Unfortunately rode the last few years on a broken helmet because I couldn't afford a new one. The outer shell was fine but the back where those whiplash ones hit was doneski and a few other cracks in other spots. Still better wearing it than not.
Also remember one big air contest the take off lacked transition and was death. Actually broke a helmet in half. It was still in one piece barely but I could have pulled it apart with my hands. Even the outer shell was done.
I don't ever want there to be laws regarding helmets in the same way I'm again seat belt laws, but you bet I'll be rocking one forever. Stoked on buying a freshy for this season. My brain needs it.
I don't think there is a warranty. I think bern and maybe some other offer deals on getting another one if you send back the broken one.
Helmets are designed to save your head from gnarly impacts. IF you bash your head and your helmet takes the abuse, you can't really get your money back on that I'd think.
Id def sucks though. My helmets are generally fucked pretty quickly and then I'm stuck with them till I can spare the loot to buy a new one.
that was great video!! i crashed 2 times last year and both times i was feeling little dizzy after the crash, broke the helmet but i was able to keeå riding that day. i wore helmet and will always continue wearing one. its fun in this sport that noone forces you to wear them and i dont want that to change, but whoever wears helmet gets my respect.
I crashed on a dfd last year, and got a minor concussion, but I was wearing a helmet, and I'm sure it would have been a lot worse without one. That's why I always wear a helmet.
With stept being such role models to the majority of young skiers, I think its blatantly irresponsible for them to do what they do without a helmet. With the kind of features they are hitting, the consequences are real. Its silly to needlessly assume such risks associated with head injuries when its been proven time and time again that they can and will end your life as you know it, if not all together. its not like 'ah shit, out for the season..' it has potential to be incoherent mumbles forever - far beyond your career as a pro skier. Its a bad image to send to the kids that so obviously take what stept is doing to heart, regardless of stepts own perspective on their influence. I can't imagine any one of those guys looking back on a severe head injury, like diapers and baby food, and being like...'oh well, totally worth it'.
They are amazing riders, but they aren't super heroes. mistakes happen and its straight up arrogant to tempt fate in the name of bravado. I personally would not be less impressed with any of their shots if they were wearing helmets.
I agree honestly. If they wore helmets they would be a more positive role model in my eyes but many of them aren't trying to be role models. I'm not saying they aren't as their status in the industry makes them ones but that it isn't their goal.
I don't want to force anyone to try and wear one, I don't want to yell at people and be like "fuck you you're stupid and should wear a helmet" but I think helmets are awesome. I think sharing the information about helmets is great but in the end it's up to the individual.
I'm surprised more parents don't force their kids to wear them. I see more of it every season though. When I was younger nobody wore a helmet. If you ski for a long time without one it's hard to change into it for some people. If you've been wearing one since you made your first turns it seems completely natural.
I think there should be more education on concussions in sports in general. People need to realize how serious a concussion injury can be, and how to treat one. Concussions are very interesting because they affect everyone differently, and are sustained differently. A person could take a 70g impact to the head and not sustain a concussion, but on a different hit experience 10gs and sustain a concussion, while other times it takes many lesser force impact hits, and other times one big blow. What is most important is if you feel at all that you have a concussion, or are experiencing any symptoms of a concussion, that you stop skiing for the day and let it heal, which usually a week or two. If you experience a second concussion whilst recovering from one, no matter now severe it is, could end your whole ski career.
yea...thats been established. They can and do whatever the fuck they want.
Its a simple choice that they have all made. To me, the choice is baseless and image oriented. it will continue to be "G as fuck" until the day that one of them takes a bad bounce on one of the many raw consequence features they hit every year, and the curtains close on their careers and livelihoods. We aren't talking knee injuries. We are talking drinking burgers with a bib forever - and that shits relatively preventable. To not wear a helmet doing what they do to live up to a certain image is short-sighted and misguided.
I smoke pot and there is this special thing called "Jah's Crown" which means that everyone that smokes while skiing's head is protected by an invisible helmet.
Thats why stept and lots of people dont wear helmets. Ever realise why its only moms, dads, little kids and 11 year olds that wear helmets?
Like i said....gnar. Helmet totally would have prevented it. One time i skied into a tree and my shoulder took most of the force. Wish i had my helmet on
I caught an edge on my way to the park 2 years ago, woke up in the hospital I was rushed there straight from the mountain, ended up having a severe concussion luckily I was wearing a helmet or else god knows what could've happened. JUST WEAR A HELMET... #helmetsarecool
just imagine, eating out of a tube the rest of your life, or, enjoying your favorite food. what are you going to choose? a helmet CAN mean the difference between these two things. count your lucky stars every time you hit your head and you just get away with actually seeing stars.
now, it's up to you whether you want to live with a tube as your source of caloric intake, or whether you want to enjoy pizza or alfredo or awesome yummy sammiches.
two years ago, i lost one of my very good friends because he was not wearing a helmet while hitting a handrail and took a fall. he was a very good skier hitting a handrail he had hit dozens of times before.
he went to bed and didn't wake up the next day. so yeah, i try and preach for people to wear helmets. i've seen the worst of what can happen if you don't.
this story should definitely be brought to light more (with honor, of course). This is the first I have heard of an actual death from hitting urban... really heavy stuff.
This thread is an eye-opener to me. I use my helmet a lot and whenever I hit my head I know that I'd be in some deep stuff if I didn't have a helmet on.
