If Russia intends to spend $51 billion on hosting these Olympics, they'll pull it off.

I hope we dont get Vancouver-ish weather for 'em, seems pretty warm and moist in the area.

probly wouldnt happen as so much of what was built is now used for other things. like i know here in whist all of the athletes village has been sold as homes. we wouldnt be able to fit all the people unless we built more, and we would have limited time to do so obviously.

^ One of the things about hosting the olympics is that if the next host (Sochi) isn't ready then the games will go back to the previous location in this case vancouver

I agree with most of you... of course they'll be ready. I think maybe i should have titled the thread "to what capacity" will russia be ready? after having the last winter olympics in an iconic ski town and a phenomenal showing in beijing and london, I think russia has an uphill battle in terms of putting on a good show for athletes and viewers alike.

This is very true, the games will not be nearly as picture-esc as Vancouver or London, and they don't have nearly the money that Bejiing had to put on such a visual spectacle.

In terms of skiing, making the freestyle disciplines work will be no problem, if you remember vancouver was able to pull it off with very little snow on cypress by important snow and making the features out of hay bails. I don't know anything about the sochii hill but I have to wonder if it will be big enough to make an adequate downhill course though.

how they got the bid in the first place, i have no idea. it's essentially a third world country with no history of being able to pull something like this off in that part of the country. they held a summer olympics a while back, but that was a vastly different part of the country from an infrastructure standpoint, and a completely different political environment as well.

it seems like the ski area gets a ton of snow, so in that regard, i don't think getting ready will be an issue. the socio-political issues are a different story, as well as being able to efficiently house and transport the athletes.

Yeah... you're a fucking idiot with zero understanding of Russia's recent history with the fall of communism and Putin giving a small circle of "businessmen" the country's massive mineral deposits and industries in turn for political support where they now make up over 30% of the country's total wealth.


Why is everyone worried about the snow? If anything be worried about the fucking security. Russia is as corrupt as you can get and trusting them to secure the biggest sports event in the world from threats such as Georgian terrorists/freedom fighters is pretty sketchy.

Good thing freeskiing isn't popular or else I'd be worried about our athletes being targeted.

I'm skeptical about the snow situation, in a big way. I'm much less concerned with the other facilities, these types of articles are literally posted every time the olympics happen and they end up finishing everything in the last 2 weeks.
