I must say this much, it looks pretty damn fantastic, and the price isn't all that bad. Kinda shitty that it's E-mount and not A-Mount but it does mean that a fairly affordable adapter will be able to utilize literally any old 35mm glass to it's fullest potential (including the old school A-mount, as apparently they have an adapter for that). Sony also drops the very 90's sounding "NEX" name with this camera.

On top of that, it looks fairly simple to use without a curmudgeon of buttons and shit that you find on modern day DSLRs, and costs about the same as a 6D or D600 for the base A7, which has a 24 mpx sensor, and 600 more for the A7R which has a 36 mpx sensor and a LPF.

And for you video guys, yes... it has a headphone jack, a flippy screen, and 1080p60 (1080p24 as well).

From what I can tell, it's a pretty damn cool step, and definitely something to consider as a slightly larger option to a m4/3rds or even NEX selection. The price is pretty fair at 1700 and 2300 for the R (which is pretty damn unnecessary) and overall it looks to be a really cool camera in a sweet looking package.

Battery life will probably be garbage with this camera, due to no optical viewfinder, but other than that, shit... this is looking mighty attractive.

you serious son? The whole reason this is a big deal is because it IS an emount aka can use most lenses out there / stay compact...

The A7r has NO low pass filter btw.

But, worthy of note is the fact that Sony makes the Nikon D800 sensor, you know, the 36.3MP one that seems oddly similar to the one used in the A7r...

What current E-mount lens would work on full frame? That's what I was alluding to. I also touched on the fact that literally every lens can be used with this thing now.

And yes. It's basically a small and WAY more affordable (700$ less on B&H) D800e for the most part. Pretty sweet!

he was also saying that the sensor in the A7 could probably be the same one that Sony used in the RX1.

when i first saw this, I for sure thought it was amount due to the "alpha" symbol on the body.

I just got 100 times more interested. I have an emount 18-200 and a high end nikon adapter and at 1800 thats a nice bcam. Stoked to see some footage from it.

your 18-200 is for crop sensors though, I'm guessing it won't work on a FF cam

Like I said, There currently aren't a lot of full frame E-mount lenses available, and the ones that they do have are for the APS-C NEX cameras and they will crop like mad - which makes them somewhat useless for video purposes. Same issue that you had with the VG900.

I'm sure it would "work" even if it didnt work til 24-30mm that'd be completely acceptable. I mean my tokina would probably work 14-16mm and my tamron 24mm-50mm etc.

There's a backshield on that lens. I'm pretty sure it's just going to come up as a rounded square within the frame.

You can use a metabones for these and use FF canon and nikkor lenses anyways.

Same, and my school has most nikon and canon lenses. I won't be upgrading my digital any time soon, but this type of camera is really growing on me. I'll wait to see what fuji comes back with.

So you're saying if the a7 HYPOTHETICALLY took better photos than the lecia, you wouldn't want to use it?

The fs100 is by far the weirdest looking camera for under $5k but by far has the best image, I dunno why you'd care what it looked like.

a lot of wide angles for crop sensors do, but only wide angles. A lot of people were getting excited about the sigma 18-35 because you can use most of the range on a 1d. Also, the tokina 11-16 can be used (and is used by many) on the 5d at 16mm. Aside from the wide angles, I really don't know of any that would work, but it will be interesting to see. Sony has likely been planning a full frame from the start of the e-mount, so maybe they have a few more tricks up their sleeve or something.

Man I can't win with the leica crowd: I could either put the sony camera in the same class as leica and get shit on, or even worse, say a camera very different from the Digi M's is the first of its kind and get shit on.

Leica Digi M's ≠ Sony's FF. Unless you want them to be...

just had to establish that jaymay, the a7 isn't an M in any way, it's a small DSLR, keeping that in mind it looks very nice. The A7R really hits it out of the ball park, if it had an optical VF and less buttons and an M mount I would be slapping down the credit card

and you can throw Leica M glass on this thing without any issues if it's anything like other NEX cameras.. Might cost you 100 at most for a really nice adapter. Great option for those who want to go with the Leica system, but can only afford a film setup like an M3 or M2, and don't want to throw down a car payment for the M9.



As for what it looks like? I think it looks really good, honestly. They went with harsher angles like cameras in the 20th century used to have, before everything had to be curvalicious and big and bulky and crazy.

It's a fantastic option for those who want the nostalgia of a 70's SLR.

1. Small package, closer in size to that of an old film SLR rather than a bulky, ugly DSLR.

2. Usability of basically any lens that was ever made for a 35mm camera.

3. 1080p60 video with a full frame sensor. Can't get that with CaNikon.

4. Price for a full frame camera that's cheaper than DSLRs with similar or exact same sensors.

5. Zeiss glass options coming out.

6. Decent looks. Not classic look like a Leica, but if you want that get a Fuji X system cam.

7. Affordable. 1700 for full frame? and with an adapter you can just use all your dad's old Canon FD glass? Cool.



I had been considering for a while picking up a 6D which costs roughly the same. If this turns out as good as it looks, I'm pretty sure I'll be going in this direction instead. I have other DSLRs for if I need an optical viewfinder anyways.

That said, the big issue with this camera will be it's battery. Better get ready to spend on some of those if anyone decides to snag one of these.

I just saw the prices....

- The Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 prime lens will cost 800 Euro and in US $800
- The Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 prime lens will cost 1100 Euro and in US $1000
- The Sony 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom will cost around 500 Euro (not sure yet about price in USA)
- The Zeiss 24-70mm f/4.0 zoom will cost around $1200 (not sure yet about price in Europe)


A 1000 bucks for a chunky f/1.8 55mm prime.
It better be excellent.

Just watched the video and first off it's a lot smaller than I expected, was thinking it'd be something xxd sized rather than

But the cost of the lenses seems pretty steep to me, regardless of how good they are I see them losing out because of it. The ability to adapt lenses is good sure, but hows the AF gonna be(assuming the AF is any good on them)? The A7R is also lacking phase detect oddly.

Also a lot of it is dependent on the IQ of the sensor both photo and video wise, could pull it either way.

Dont get this. Everything i have heard about the fs700 and 100 is how bad the ergonomics and design are. Maybe its because i have never had a legit camcorder and have only owned slrs before my fs, but i love the design. So nice to shoot with. All the buttons seem nicely layed out.

Any way new sony cam looks dope. Always nice to see more full frames.

Absolutely, but some people are autofocus-only (because they suck at photography) and will splurge on them.

Personally, If I picked this up, I already have just about all of the lenses I'd ever want for it, so I'd be out only the cost of the body and extra batteries. There would be zero reason to ever go with one of the native lenses for me - especially if a metabones is that much cheaper.
