Yes they are overrated, because teenagers like yourself wikipedia Big L or Cam'Ron and go...."woah dude, I didn't know he was in a Harlem group in the 90's! I'm gonna namecheck them from now on and sound in the know!" CoC has no culutral cachet, and no longstanding relevancy in hip hop, period. They have NO classic songs. CoC is a footnote in the solo careers of those artists. The group had what.....15 songs ever?
If you read the thread, you'd know that I'm not even personally a fan of Eminem. I don't listen to him and haven't listened to an album of his since Encore. And yet...he is infinitely more talented than Mase. Eminem isn't in my personal top ten, and yet, I can still understand and believe that he is one of the best ever to put words together on beat, for the reasons I gave above.
There's no argument to be made. While taste is subjective, you couldn't find 100 people in Harlem that would tell you with a straight face that Mase is a better emcee than Em. For you to put Mase in that vaunted group of rappers is insane. We're talking about shiny suited Mase, the guy with the slowest, least interesting delivery ever. Harlem World is an awful, awful album and is about as hiphop as No Way Out. He sounds like he has down syndrome.
The mere fact that you're somehow switching the argument from being about to Mase to NY, really says it all. Did I argue about NY's clout? I wouldn't ever, but if I was going to chest beat for NY, it wouldn't be on the strength of Mason Betha. P.S., if you're going to try and play the hiphop head role, you should probably learn the burroughs. Protip: Yonkers isn't one of them. That's where LOX is from.
Come on, admit it. You're just trolling. No one believes Mase is a good rapper, especially not on the back of a handful of 16s on posse cuts from like '94.
As someone who has been in a lot of stupid, pointless arguments on this website, writing a few paragraphs in response to someone claiming Mase as an all-time great has to be the dumbest. In that respect, you win.
