Best Editing Computer?

Hey NS!

I am in the market for a new computer this year and was wondering if any of you had any thoughts on what is good/not good and had your own personal recommendations. The programs I use most frequently are Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects but I also use a variety of other occasionally. I am open to both Mac's and PC's as well as the possibility of straight building a computer from individual parts. Budget within 750-1400. Refurbished/used is definitely a possibility.

Build your own.  Cheaper and you can say you built it.  For a beastly editing pc your gonna want 8+ gigs of ram, the more the better.  Also, get a SSD it will make your files and programs load way faster.  I hate waiting for Photoshop and all that crap to load.  And if your not playing any games you shouldn't need a video card which will save you big bucks.  Good luck!

I would say dont get a mac because of the price range. everything from macbooks across to the mac mini will be all tiny laptop components, (including the imac)

if you build your own pc, you could put in the effort to make a hackintosh, and get much better bang for buck than a mac pro.

check this series out to check what you could do bang for buck wise, and youd have a mac and windows in 1

Adobe software is pretty tailored to run on mac so that's what I would recommend.

The mac is a great choice and you will have the opportunity to use Final Cut Pro, by far the best program. If you would rather use the pc based programs look into computers like Alienware. Alienware is Dell's high end line and is great, however it's very over priced. Building your own computer can be a practical option although I don't recommend it if you don't know a lot about computers

you could spend $2k on a mac or you could build a $2k pc that will run much better than the mac, and then put osx on it

i have to biggist mac book pro made that year from 2011. got it for $800 at a pawn shop.and i regularly run the adobe suit on it for my work just about everyday. as said above they just work and never die. plus they make really cool die cuts for them...

Very wrong, they operate just as well on both windows and mac.


If you want a laptop, go apple. If you want a desktop, go windows.

I built my own desktop for $1400 and its faster than the brand new $3000 imacs we have at work.

It actually does not run as well on macs according to adobe themselves. They have had issues with memory management on ISO and recommend that windows is the more stable platform.

Well, it runs perfectly fine on windows for me. The point was that you shouldn't buy an apple computer or run OSX because it allegedly "runs better"

That was my point adobe recommend windows rather then Osx.

I got my current laptop for $400 last year and it's very suitable for using Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and After Effects. I highly recommend NOT to get a Windows computer with Windows 8, Windows 7 IMO is better.

I disagree with the anti-mac sentiment a lot of people of posted. In my opinion you're better off getting a standard macbook or imac. I own a PC and love Windows, but the fact is PCs are just built with cheap materials and components. I bought my PC because I got the same specs of a macbook for way cheaper. I too thought macs were overpriced, but after a couple years you start to see the difference with friends who bought macs at the same time I bought my PC. They just don't last that well. I'm not super into computers so I can't give technical details, but they just fall apart on the outside, crash and get buggy regardless of viruses or not. My two cents from my experiences editing and owning a PC. Next purchase will be a Mac.

1. build it yourself -- (requires some research time and build time + building know how or more time to learn how (absolutely best option if you do it right / can also make it into a hackintosh))

1.5 go to a website where you chose all the parts and they build it and ship it to you(research)

2. get a nice mac/pre built pc (research or just buy something)

more bang for your buck with pc (but personally, fuck windows 8 i'd get windows 7 if i went that route)

currently i have a macbook pro with a ssd and it's dual booted via bootcamp with windows 7 for an engineering class

highly recommend a SSD, more ram is better, processor isn't usually the bottleneck but get a decent one and you'll probably be more content with a dedicated graphics card but don't need to go overboard on that like some gamers do

There's no real reason not to shy away from windows 8 if it comes on a computer. I've been using it for about 6 months and I have no regrets. It's clearly intended for a touch screen, but I don't use the front end it has anyways. All you have to do is get the script to boot to desktop and it's essentially the same as 7, no downsides as far as I see. If I had a touch screen, I'd like it even more and probably even use it's tile interface.

As far as computers themselves go, I paid $850 for my lenovo y500. 8gb of ram, 2 gb gt650m graphics card, i7 quad core @ 2.4 ghz, 1080 screen and 1 tb hdd. That's a lot of power for the price, especially considering it's a laptop. It absolutely rips through video and photo editing, and I play games like bf3 on mostly high settings no problem.
