Replying to Securing 6" diameter PVC pipe to a 2x8/2x6

So I am building a rail for winter and I was trying to figure out in my head how to secure a 6" PVC pipe to a board. I'm thinking that a single file line of screws from the bottom would break after just a few hits. So should I double up on screws and do two lines from the bottom? Or should I put a cradle-like structure underneath the pipe like this- \__/ And then screw from the three sides? If you've ever used a 6" tube tell me about your experience. And what you'd recommend for me.
