Aymar Navarro gets swallowed by a vast avalanche and survives via an ABS Airbag pack. The width of that slide is pretty fucking shocking seeing a human in the middle of it. Everyone have fun and stay safe this upcoming season.

Now is the time to buy! Depending on brand and model they can be had for around 450. There is a member on here selling a bca float 22 with the refillable canister for about that. ABS packs are on Backcountry right now for about 600.

I needed a new day tour pack and figured why not invest a bit in my safety.

holy shit that's scary. Here's the interview with him with English subs:


He says there was 12 feet of new snow and about a foot of fresh from the night before. The sun just so happened to come out that day, and they knew the risks, and tried to minimize by picking a lower angle slope that they thought least likely to slide. He was riding it out trying to outrun it when he hit a cliff...that's when he lost it and got swallowed.

Crazy fucking shit. Def check out the interview.

Idiot. It's not like they shot all of that footage exactly how presented in order before he dropped in on that slope. All of those shots were edited in that way for the ad. It's more likely that they got those shots after the slide was over. It's a mute point.

Kinda weird they set off another avy, albeit smaller, in the actual commercial which was posted above. Seems like the conditions were really dangerous and they decided to shoot anyway. Stupid.

Also, the operatic music in the background of the ABS is one thing that really bugs me. I don't have a problem with footage being used to show a products use but to use music like that is totally bogus.

Ignorance is certainly a reason to die, are you kidding? It's no different than someone overdosing on a drug, if you choose to put yourself in that danger you should be able to accept the consequences.

This, this, this. I have no issue with them using the footage to promote the pack, but I could certainly do without the theatrics. It should've opened when it started to slide and ended with him on top of the snow, then cut to the ABS logo. No music or any of the promotional shots before. Irksome.

so he basically gave you some stats, saying how many different lines then he goes into detail of how the lab cracked and he tried to beat it and began to tomahawk. he then says how he pulled the chord the bags inflated then he came to the top of the snow. he lost his skis goggles and poles. so basically everything you saw in the video is what he said. nothing to exciting or revealing.

I posted it because of how an incredibly huge slide it was, not because it was all done up. You don't normally see the entire mountain rip away like that with a skier in it. Now if you had asked the question, "If they had, would this have gone viral?" then that's a different story.

For everyone hating on this ad, how is it any different than a car company advertising how well the crumple zones, airbags, or OnStar work during a crash?

It's not like people are looking at those commercials, and then deciding to go run their car into a tree to see if they really work.

Airbags in cars are there IN CASE something unexpected happens.
Airbags in backpacks are there IN CASE something unexpected happens.

Because no human lives are in danger when using crash test dummies for NHTSA, in-house, or third party purposes. Are you serious? You're trolling right? It wasn't a robot skiing in that ad, it was a person.

They certainly do give off the vibe that you are unstoppable when wearing this thing. Not the best idea of marketing in my opinion/

The ad is implying that using an ABS pack will save you if you get caught in a slide. That's simply not true at all. An ABS wont do shit if get wrapped around a tree or smash your head on rocks. Sure it might help if the slope you're on is a constant pitch with no trees, rocks, crevasses, and/or terrain traps but that's almost never the case. The majority of avalanche deaths result from trauma, not suffocation.

Also, the decision to ski that slope seems pretty ridiculous to me. I wasn't there and dont know specifics but they got 12 feet of snow that week with a foot overnight... That would call for a pretty detailed snowpack analysis in my opinion, not a fuckin survey from a chopper.

The guy made a pretty poor decision to ski this slope and in the end he just got lucky as fuck that he didn't get raped by any rocks.

Don't rely on your beacon/ABS/avalung/friends to get you out of trouble. Making smart decisions based on snow science about what you're going to ski/board/sled/climb will always be the best way to avoid ending up wrapped around a tree 10 feet down. 'm not saying that you shouldn't hang in the backcountry when there's moderate or high avy risk, but you need to know what the actual risk is and choose what you're going to ski accordingly with those risks. So when you do start pushing the envelope, you have a pretty good idea of what's going on and can plan for a way out if the slope pops. It's pretty basic avy awareness stuff, but I feel like it gets overlooked these days.

But really, the effect I was trying to have was that the stats are very hard to read and that this device is not GOING to save your life but it will increase your chances. Most importantly, people need to understand decision making and how it may be affected wearing a bag. This ABS video is only perpetuating the thought that the bag is a safety net and it's that simple. Read. Think. Stay alive.

i see what youre saying but from what ive seen, people are pissed because they have some info on the conditions/situation of the shots and they think it was irresponsible to ski it as he did, and then set it to dramatic music

so to make your car ad analogy more accurate, it's as if a person in a car commercial did some really irresponsible shit set to dramatic music, and the safety features of the car saved him. which i think people would probably not universally like
