Aymar Navarro gets swallowed by a vast avalanche and survives via an ABS Airbag pack. The width of that slide is pretty fucking shocking seeing a human in the middle of it. Everyone have fun and stay safe this upcoming season.

Do they make the ABS with the Avalung as well or is it one or the other?

No. Avalung is a very different technology. It is possible that you could use an avalung at the same time as an airbag, but it's not recommended. Using both an airbag and avalung would give you two things to pull (airbag trigger and breathing tube), and it's difficult enough just pulling one in an avalanche.

No, this makes you want to avoid terrain and conditions like that. ABS using this footage as an advertisement is total bullshit.

I'm surprised that the snow was so light and fluffy at the end. I don't have a lot of experience with avalanches, but I was under the impression they almost always would stiffen up after they stop.

I know they're totally different I was thinking added protection in case that bag doesn't work. I always have the tube on mine close enough to my mouth that I can grab it with my teeth.

True. I felt like when watched it first time he clda pulled up as soon as he saw it going and the feel of the advert was almost cgi. Wld love to see the rest of the footage, in more docu style rather than this hollywood shit. Or maybe im just talking shit. either way i cannot afford an ABS bag so prob just bitter

That's the best you can do, however it might not be enough. Your tube could easily get ripped away from your mouth by the force of the avalanche.

you're all crazy. Aymar Navarro is a badass and this definitely was not staged or CGI. and as for ABS using this for an advertisement, why the hell not? it is THEIR product in ACTION, so seems like a perfect commercial to me...

Because the skiing public will watch this and think they can ski sketchy snowpack & terrain and an airbag will save their ass when the shit hits the fan. It's an irresponsible message, even if not intended by ABS.

The truth? 1 in 4 victims of a potential deadly slide will be killed by trauma in the fall, and another 1 in 4 will be caught in a terrain trap and buried too deep to successfully rescue anyway.

The number one reason why I have yet to venture in the backcountry with my bro-neighbor is this truth you are preaching. I'm concerned not by the decisions that we would make, after reading the avy report and testing the snowpack for ourselves, but by the overconfidence that newbs would feel in their newly purchased airbags and avalungs. I'm way more worried about the possibility of being caught in something that some douche triggered somewhere above me on the skin track.

Anyone who thinks he willing put himself in that position for an advertisement is pretty moronic. That said it is really lame for a company to glorify something like this the way they did.

Rumor has it that this was done on purpose..that they wanted him to get in an avalanche and use it all for an ad..
Here is his first line of that day:

Why could this be set up?
- All kind of shots pointing out the ABS backpack and logos (There is no need for shooting an ABS backpack if someone doesnt get in a slide etc)
- His first run of the day is in the same area, he triggers an avy but doesnt get in, after that he goes to a steeper slope in the same area, in the same conditions even later on the day..why the fuck would you do that?

Other option is that they were shooting an ad for Ford, that they didnt get enough shots after the first run en pushed him back up for another run..where he got in that bigger avy..

I'd love to hear from the man himself about it. If he did knowingly do that, then he almost won himself a Darwin Award. As for the all the close up commercially ABS shots, I just figured they shot them after it happened. Hm.

I didn't see them glorifying anything in the ad, in fact I thought it was awesome. The product worked, and ended up saving someone's life. (obviously wasn't staged). In the details of the youtube video, you'll see they were filming a t.v. commercial for a car brand. Like really? who would f'in stage this.

And it's sad to say but the public deserves to die if they decide to ski terrain out of their ability level as a result of watching this video. Just because the ABS airbag gives you a false sense of security doesn't mean it's okay to put yourself at risk. We all make our own decisions, we all have brains, use them.

This video was never an advertisement saying "come buy our product, you'll be able to ski anything you want and never get hurt"... it's simply showing that it CAN save your life if you do choose to ski the wrong terrain/wrong conditions etc. Be smart out there this season NS

Very interesting.

The fact that this was posted under the ABS account sets me off. I missed many of the nuances of the pro-ABS nuances the first time around before I knew this was posted on the ABS account.

Seems a little too coincidental to me.

It's one thing for Mr. and Mrs. Cody Townsend to come out and talk about airbags after the Stevens incident but if that guy was purposely avalanche hunting just to make that ad, WTF were they thinking?

Hes right though, you just are too soft to realize it.

This video was a great video to show off their product. It did exactly what it is meant to do, It is called advertising.

If some gong buys this, skis somewhere OB, kills himself...so what? Another avy death from some dumb ass who put himself in danger. Only difference is he has an air bag and thought he was superman because of it

It seemed like he might have been able to get out to the right at the beginning. That part fractured below where he was. I guess when it all goes down it happens fast but you could see the shit going in front of him. Idk, maybe it wouldn't have worked.

Maybe bombing through was the best plan. Also probably would have looked sick if he out ran it.

I def don't want to fuck with an avy ever.

I'd rather get another hundred feet down the mountain and take my chances with skis on my feet than try and stop higher up. You have no idea what is behind you when you're caught like that, down is at least a known.

This this this! Its going to catch you eventually, Id rather get tumbled for as short of a distance as possible. I have an airbag, hopefully I wont have to pull it, but when things rip, I want as good chance as I have.

And about the avalung+airbag pack, check out at the TGR forums, there have been a few frankenbags made.

Idk, but there is something fishy about the video. They filmed a closeup of his ABS pack and the handle before he dropped in, and the whole thing looked kinda staged.

There's no fucking way this is staged. Nobody is going to hunt down an avalanche just for some fucking ad. It's not like the profit/benefit of shooting the ad is worth more than almost killing yourself

As someone who has been apart of a class 3.5 Avi rescue I can honestly say that the ABS bag is worth its weight in gold.

2 people were burried in our slide, one was more than 2 meters below the snow surface, and the one with the ABS bag on had his arm and head above the snow. It was amazing to see the difference it makes.
