Ski trip to Switzerland/Austria

I just had my visa's confirmed and now all my flights are final and what not.


I fly into to Zurich on Jan 10th at 14:00 and Depart Jan 19th at 21:00.

This is entirely by myself.


Any recommendations? Anyone live in a ski town in Switzerland/Austria that I could stay at? Or anyone want to come join me from somewhere else?

I have friends in Luzern, so I can easily stay there for a day or 2 before/after but none of my friends ski (weird right?).

I can probably get to the French side of Switzerland pretty cheap as well if I know enough in advance, so that's not out of the question either.

My only advice is stay longer if you can, because no matter where you go in the Alps, you won't want to leave.

Haha, I'm working in Russia from Jan 20th to Feb 24th, so I can't.

But a 6 - 7 day ski trip was mandatory since I was able to book my entire flight under $900.


I'll have plenty of opportunities to ski pretty much anywhere and everywhere provided my health stays good, so I'm not too worried :) I just want to have a great first experience even though I am coming out alone.

I would also recommend you not to stay in switzerland cause it's fucking exepensive there. Just go to Austria/Tirol. There are plenty of really nice snowparks like Mayrhofen or Serfaus and it's cheaper, not really cheap but for sure cheaper than in switzerland.

I lived in Luzern for 6 months. It's actually cheaper to spend a week in LAAX than a week in Mammoth. Although flight costs vary a lot depending on where you are. I once flew into Zurich for $180 from Los Angeles Round trip. Last winter I went for $449 round trip when it was going to be $480 for me to fly to North Caroline to visit my mother. She understood my choice.

The only 4 things that are really that much cheaper in the US are, mixed drinks 5CHF/15CHF, Movie theater tickets 12CHF/21CHF, Starbucks (tall frappachino) 4CHF/8CHF, and Burger King (Whopper meal) 5CHF/12CHF

For some reason Avocados are cheaper in Switzerland than they are in California. I would love that explained to me.

I live in the french part, Nendaz. (ski area of verbier)  always have a couch for newschoolers to crash on and if you let me know enough in advance i can normally get more days off... though the days i do work i only work afternoons early evenings.

Spent last season in Nendaz/Verbier. One of my favourite places in Europe. Great terrain, not that expensive -except for Verbier, accomodation in Nendaz is pretty cheap and groceries is really cheap in Sion (town in the valley below Nendaz)-. A lot of Swedes spend their season in the 4 valleys so there's always nice people to shred with (not saying that other people aren't nice but people who are leaving everything behind just to ski are usually pretty chill).

Sorry to thread jack but i'm looking into spending this season in verbier and was wandering how hard it would be to just show up and get a job if i don't get one before I arrive? Any ideas?

I've never been to the states, so I can't speak on Swiss prices comparative to the States, but in general Switzerland is expensive as fuck. If you don't mind a little train ride, you will most definitely save large amounts of money heading into Austria. That's what I would do, Tirol is a safe bet, an absolute buffet of world class resorts to choose from. As mentioned Zillertal is a dope place, but anywhere in Tirol is sick.

Not 100% on Verbier.... Nendaz would be pretty hard to just turn up.. Verbier is much bigger. But seriously if you want to come for shredding Nendaz is way better than Verbier... For partying Verbier is better. If you're interested in here pm me and i can give you some contacts.  For Verbier really have no idea where to start.

But we get to the top of Mt Fort (4 Vallees highest point) before Verbier on a pow day.

Jarle, Were you with Fredrick and that? if so I know you haha.


Jibberino.... Switzerland is not as expensive as everyone makes out..... depends where you go. The same as everywhere.

Wait, what? I lived with Fredrick, Rasmus (guy with the torn achilles tendon, me and him left very early due to injuries and sickness), Mattias and Robin (the guy who busted his shoulder).

Ah, yes, I remember! Did you have a good season? Yupp, and we passed the bad luck on to our friends upstairs (Per and the other swedes) and the ones in Verbier too.... We should probably hand out warnings before we ski with new people :D

It's all relative. In comparison to Austria, I would argue that anywhere in Switzerland is more expensive, with some being ridiculous at best.

Switzerland was expensive everywhere I went this summer, I always heard it was pretty expensive but some things, especially food, were just ridiculously overpriced.

Motorways were also busier than I expected.

I went to Zermatt and it was probably the best week of my life. Great night life, Great mountain, great atmosphere. Plus you can ski over from switzerland to italy which was pretty dope.

I'm Swiss! studied the last 2 years in Innsbruck Austria and YES, Switzerland is really expensive! Specially rent, food and liftpasses, so pretty much the things that count for you!

i went to the hintertux valley right before new years last year and it was fun. the parks were alright and the last couple days it dumped. dont go there expecting nice parks until a little bit later in the season
