Yo, I bought a camper for 700$ and use iit for adventures. I tore up the inside and then insulated the fuck out of it with r30 insulation. I live in Oakland,Ca right now so its easy to work on because the weather but I just took my trailer up for the first time and really pushed it to its limits.
I ride tahoe and kirkwood just got their first dump. So after class on thursday me and 4 homies packed in my subaru loaded the trailer and sent it. we stay at SNO-PARKS they cost 25$ per season and are pretty much a lot located on mountain passes always within at least 10 miles of any of the resorts up here. the sno-parks which are used by snowmobilers also have really rad backcountry access.
advantages of having a trailer over van.
you can ditch the trailer where ever you like. You just need a coupler lock. which locks your hitch reciver on the trailer they are like 20$ on amazon.
The motor in your car will be much more reliable then the motor in a camper which is constantly hauling the load of a camper.
you can use your car for other things besides camping which for me is nessacary because I go to school in a city like san francisco.
heating is tricky I bought a propane heater called the mr heater buddy portable heater...
ended up not workiing above 7,000 ft which is not good cause if you are cruising resorts or BC shit on mtn passes you are higher then that..
so i have found on rv camping forums that most people hook up to a "marine battery" and then run electricity from the positive negative plugs on that. a electric heater is definatly the best idea due to fuck C02 posioning. which is FUCKING SERIOUS.
SO, just buy an old used utility trailer on craigslist and put in some fucking work on it and you will have a good old time!!!!!!
