Building skis

My finred and I are goinan amke some sksi....he's still in highskool, and he is in all of the shop classes, so we figure we can sue thier equipment....but anywas we are gonan use a maple core we think ( but pure maple is pretty heavy) so we are thinking of making em really flexi and going for an aspen core, and we figure these are gonna be mostly jib skis, bebcause they are way easier to make...so we are ganna try ot make the edges liek industructable......but if you have too much crappy metlal in your sksi, they can get deforme if you hit em hard, thats why it is important for us to use wood.....anwyas, anyone got any tips for us?

you need a heated press as well..have you htought about using a cedar core? its wicked light, its softwood, but we use it for canoes and its GREAT...plus when you steam it it holds its shape wonderfully

i was going to try and make skis out of plywood once, make a crazy sidecut so they would turn. then i realized i was being an idiot, and promptly gave up the idea.

You can't just wake up one day and decide to build some skis. Its not like that. Unless you are just messing around and not really planning on making some serious high quality boards, you may wanna re-think it. Otherwise, have fun!

YEah I tried t make skis in my wood tech class........... yeah dont try to make good skis you need a little more then just edges and a core u need laminates a p tex base special fiberglass wrap to put around the base its way more complicated then u think. If your seriously thinkin about it go to the phillipenes and ask the sweatshop workers how to make them they will know! seriously dont try youll kill yourself tryin to make them or youll kill yourself tryin to use them. just make a nice rail or somethin/.

heres a tip: finish HS then go to college and take some business classes and woodwork, metal work classes then get enough money to make millions of skis and buy a huge factory and presses and shit, then lose all ur money cause no one will buy them, but thats about it have fun

why do you guys think you know everything and tell him not to do this? obviously they are doing it for fun and aren't tryin to start a new company or produce skis that are gonna hold up for years. instead of telling him not too, why dont you either 1. not reply or 2. answer his questions?

are you aware of how much this is going to cost you to produce? and how do you plan on making your cores? C&C machine? pressing them? cap or sidewall, or a combination of both? what kind of base? extruded or sintered? if its a sidewall ski, what are you making the sidewalls out of? if its a cap ski, what is the cap material? you see what i am getting at? it can be done, but its going to take a ton of time and a ton of money to get the first pair done with a design that will function moderately well. but by all means, if you have the time, money, and patience, go for it. and definately put rivets in the tips and tails....

^^^^ I gave him advice which is what he asked for my advice is dont try its not worth it and IT will give you a c+ in wood tech or thats what I got. And its not fun breathing in chemicals possibly nuddering yourself with some chemicals. and then have two peices of shit that brake when you screw bindings inot them besides that its alot of fun!

dude, you CAN NOT make skis in shop class. i there is so much more that goes into it than just some wood, glass, and edges. how are you gonna get the profile of the Ski? making cores is really advanced machining, and there is no way you will be able to make anything close to a core in a shop class. just bite the bulit, and forget about it. its wicked expensive anyway. if you really want to find out more, look up stickyfingers snowboard building. at least you can get an idea of whats goin on.

You can profile the core with a belt sander, hand plane, or if you want consistency, just make a router jig bridge setup. Its not that hard

ok first off, i am in college, in engineering. Second off we can get bases and eveyrthing from Prior, and they are gonna give us a low down shop tour , and chris is gonna tell us what he did to make their skis. Third off, these aren't suppose to be like my skis for the year, i have 7 pairs of skis, we are just making these skis, so that we can fuck around on them, and say we have made our own skis. Cedra is too flexy, but the press idea is good, i thin k to make the tips we have to make our own press, and use some glue to hold position. The thing i can't figure out is do we put the sidewalls on the wood first?, and then fill stuff in,or do we start with the edges and wood core, then sidewalls, to base, to lamination. My spelling is soo bad because i type really fast, and i don't care about how it comes out. But anyways more any tips would be gretaly appreaciated!-thanks!

you cut the base out with a template out of a sheet of p tex, bend and glue the edges to the ptex base. then you take your core block, cut out the sidecut and shape with a template, glue on the sidewalls, then profile the core with the sidewalls glued on, then you lay the base in the mould/press, wich is shaped like the camber and tip and tail, then lay down your first layer of fibreglass, put the core ontop and line it up, put the top layer of glass on and the topsheet, then with it all lined up, press it, or vacuum bag it, depending which one you're doing. after 24 hours in the press or vacuum bag, take it out and cut the excess glass off with a band saw, grind the rest with a grinder and tune the edges and base and all that jazz.
