Any of you ever been there? My school managed to get in on some king of educational visa. Are customs there seroius? would I be locked up If I tried to bring a few cigars back?

There is still an embargo against Cuba and tourism is technically not allowed to there. As OP said there are some exceptions. Also without getting a visa like that you can just fly to mexico then fly on a mexican carrier to Cuba.

My dad did this, but it looks funky on your passport. You have a leaving Mexico stamp and then a return stamp into Mexico when you come back.

I know a bunch of people who've gone on vacations and on person who lived in Cuba for a while (go Canada). All of them have absolutely loved it. Amazing country, culture, food, things to do, scenery, etc. it sounds like the place to go if you are able to.

If you want to go to Cuba from the US, you need to fly to Canada and then to Cuba, as far as I'm aware. Also, our flight form Cuba back to Calgary was delayed for a day and a half so we had to sleep in the airport which was awesome! Customs seemed pretty lax, I managed to get drinks from the bar at our hotel and I'm like not even 18 or anything (I'm kind of a big kind of a big deal bitches). But ya, the airport had like bunkers and old helicopters right beside the runway which was pretty awesome, and they don't like Americans because you guys really fucked with them or something a long time ago and they haven't forgotten about that yet.

Tl;dr You can't fly there from the US, you have to fly out of Canada, there pretty chill and everybody's nice, and don't boast about being american because you will get raped.

We are actually flying through mexico, but yeah. is there still resentment toward the americans? I completely understand why, but some countryies forgive and some don't. In vietnam there is very little dislike, but in tehran they are still pissed off about the british. also, the drinking age is 16 right?

From what I gathered americans aren't given the same special treatment as canadians, at least at the place we stayed. There were a lot of people from Québec and they got a lot of attention from the employees lol. Also, I thought it was eighteen, bartender guy caught on to my ruse the second time I ordered drinks and there was nay an adult in sight, then another canadian guy at the bar ordered my drinks for me so that was nice.

my buddy just got back from a trip where he had an educational visas. he was really sketched out about bringing cigars back, but when he met up with the leader of his group to head to the airport, the group leader said he was bringing a few because customs leaving cuba isnt all that thorough and got them back to the US no problem.

I doubt they'll extensively search your bags for cigars while leaving... just dont tell anyone and keep it your secret. I brought back a bunch of cuban cigars from France. They were real tastey.. not just because they were illegal either.

I went back in 2011. I connected flights from Costa Rica. Definitely go if you get the opportunity. I brought back a few Cohibas and had no problems. My passport was stamped from Costa Rica thougt. If you are getting a Cuban visa stamp I would expect an extra check. In all honesty they are not that much better than some of the Porto Rican or Honduran but it is more status. Have a great time.
