my dads friends where going to the olympics for sailing but had to eventually drop out because they couldnt afford it. they spent thousands of dollars trying to get in and ounce the option of getting in was there they just ran out of money. so shitty that they where so close and money was the only problem stopping them.

You know, in the end this turned out pretty positive for him. In the time that this was blasting on the homepage the campaign jumped to over $14k. So I'm sure he can trim a few expenses and be good to go.

Looks like its slowed down a touch now, but still... I'd say regardless of what people think popular opinion is - the community reached out and supported Matt.

What does matt really want to do? Who are you to be telling matt what he should be doing?

How about instead of being mad about one of the many directions the sport is being pushed in, why don't you push it in a way you want it to go. All I'm reading is whine, whine, whine without anyone offering alternatives. Don't expect to win any debates that way.

And as I said before, skiing never forced anyone to do anything a certain way. The only rule of skiing is that you have a board strapped to each one of your feet, the rest is up to you. You can do the Olympics or you can ski urban or pillows or if you really want you can do them all.

Everything is relative, if you wanna take a global perspective then yes, skiing is a rich mans sport. However in this discussion I don't find much use for such a large perspective. A global perspective will make any activity we partake in a rich mans activity. I find it more useful to take a more regional approach, such as comparing Europe to North America, and in this case, like I said before, the sport of skiing is much more attainable, both financially and logistically, for Europeans. This whole thing has more to do with social models than skiing, but I do believe it is relevant in shining light on why Margetts needs to fundraise.

I agree that it is Margetts prerogative to start a fundraising campaign, and it is the public's prerogative whether or not they want to donate. I just believe that the fact that he needs to fundraise exposes deeper rooted problems concerning freestyle skiings participation in the Olympics.

But, like I said in my OP, Team Canada has pretty much left Margetts (and other athletes in the same position) out to dry if they haven't provided some sort of work-partnership program

commercial fishing
sport fishing lodges
silviculture (treeplanting, brushing, slash pile burning, beetle probing, surveying, etc)
forest fire fighting (if it's a good fire season)

there's plenty more, but those 4 were off the top of my head, go from April till November and give you a lay off at the end of the season.

Does the site he's using work like kickstarter and he only gets the money if he reaches his goal?

At this point he's for sure going to make it, 17K raised with 53 days left. I don't think he's going to have a problem.

The assumptions being made all over this thread are simply astounding. Just picked this one out of the hat as an example.

Nobody has to pay anything or go to any camps to be considered to be on the olympic team. The team is chosen based on nothing other than competition results.

People totally can, as you say "train on their own, compete, place well enough and be qualified".

Matt obviously feels that his best chance of success in comps is to put a significant investment into his training and preparation.

The real important thing here that EVERYONE seems to be missing, is that this training he is undertaking, is not "just for the Olympics". It is simply the path that he believes will serve him best to be as good as he can possibly be at competing in skiing halfpipe - Including: Dew Tours, Grand Prix, XGames, Olympics, etc.

It is obviously being labeled as an Olympic fundraiser because the majority of the world has a lot more respect and appreciation for the Olympics than any other freesking event. The notion of supporting an athlete who is competing for more than just themselves, but their country as well, makes a much better sales pitch, and is a cause that countless people will feel very good about supporting.

Dew Tour, X games, and Grand Prix results are all considered in the Canadian team selection process so it is really one in the same. Last year's X games and Dew Tour results are part of reason Riddle has a spot.

Yeah, training should improve his skiing and help him out in any contest but you can't say he says he's training for the olympics but he's really just training for some other events because those events count.

The Canadian team is going to be announced on January 19th. Xgames is the week after.

The point is that if there wasn't an Olympics this year and instead his goal was to win the XGames, he would still go through the same training process to try and prepare to do that.

Training to win the Olympics is not a DIFFERENT thing than training to win the XGames, it's the EXACT same thing, it's just training to try and be the best pipe skier.

That is actually an excellent point. So I guess the big question is, if Matt wins the X Games with this (or any other big check) and collect on his podium incentives, does he return everyone's money?

I'm curious. I should hope so.

I would like to see something along the lines of a donation to a small mountain or children's program related to freeskiing. To give back to the sport which is where he was asking for money to begin with.

Honestly who cares? Why you are all of a sudden a moral beacon of all that is good and charitable I have no idea and the notion that you would would demand that Matt track down every $25 donor and give it all back or expect that he give it all to charity is pretty silly to me. Why are you so upset that he was able to crowdsource funding instead of get it from some corporate sponsor?


I just don't see you freaking out about anybody else's money when their way has been paid by sponsors too- Do you pay back Level 1 when you take a podium? I'm honestly curious if this is normal practice because I feel like it wouldn't be but I could be wrong so that's why I'm asking.

A. I never podium in anything except drinking competitions.

B. Why would I pay anyone back when I don't beg for anything? The only checks that have ever gotten cut for me are some travel reimbursements and incentive checks for the movies from at the most two of my sponsors In a given year.

C. I'm not some moral beacon, far from it. I'm fucking naive, brash, and voice my opinion on the Internet because I like to have these conversations. You on the other hand, you can't even formulate a coherent thought and haven't done so in any thread I've ever seen you post in.

what he means is that if matt achieves his goal (podiums at x or another big event to qualify for the Olympics), he will no longer have money issues, and the people who helped him out will have gotten him to where he needs to be. No one is saying a positive return on the investment.

Say you are hurting for cash and your friend gives (same as donates) to you 50 bucks to pay your electric bill. Nicest guy ever. If you continue hurting, your friend isnt going to expect you to give that money back. However, if you were to make fat stacks that next week, it would probably be kinda nice to throw 50 bucks back at him.

Why would he pay anyone back if they all willfully gave just because they wanted to see the guy succeed rather than fail when his sponsors shit the bed on him at the last minute? Also some of the paybacks were pretty cool imo, so they did "get something" if you want to be technical.


I seriously think you're the person who's the most bothered by this. You can call me a dumbass all you want, I'm just trying to figure out why you're so upset that people didn't just kick him to the gutter so they could derive personal satisfaction in his failure for not selling out for their own dreams- when simply letting go of the anger and being happy that a fellow skier is getting some much needed help from the community you owe much of your own success to is so much more productive and positive in general.

I mean, is there something we don't know? Did Matt leave you at the altar? Bang your sister and never call her again?? I mean damn dude, woo sah. No wonder he never came in here to talk about the decision.

Wow this is a mega shit show... I don't even know where to begin, but I guess I will comment on the fact that pro skiers get paid shit. Honestly. It's ridiculous how little money there is in "freeskiing" . We live in a world where the premiere big mountain skiers of our time pay for their own heli time out of their own pocket, so I can totally understand Matt's needs to ask for help in getting to by far the most expensive stage in skiing.

You all need to understand that freeskiing is poor as shit. This is not football, this is not soccer, this is not cycling, this is not tennis, this is not even skateboarding... I would even go so far as to wager that handball has more money flowing through it. On top of that, it requires an insane amount of training to stay competitive at the highest level of skiing. How on earth you think he could afford to raise that much money on his own in that short of a time period and stay fit enough to compete an Olympic level is bat shit insane.

It's sad that the snowsports world gives so much to some and so little to others. The real problem here is a demand with no supply from companies and organisations with well enough funds to cover every cost they have their fingers in. This is what happens when Idols are created and are "supposedly" supposed to be paid more and leave less for the rest of the community.

I mean if you're sponsoring people you're probably going to pay the guy that everyone cares about a little more. If he's the reason your product is flying off the shelves you're getting a much larger return on your investment.

If you win pipe at the x games, you sure up a sponsor for the next 2 years, probably pocket $50k somehow between prize money and sponsor bonuses.

If you win pipe at the Olympics you set your family up for the rest of your life. You instantly become a world wide celebrity, and have 12 months to make almost endless money endorsing stuff in hundreds of countries around the world.

How fucking stupid you sound suggesting you would prepare for those events the same. X games would be worth a few months of training and working hard. Olympics would be worth dedicating your life for 2+ years and training 24 hours a day, adjusting everything you do to peak for that one day that may change you, your kids, and your grandkids lives for centuries.

You can hate the olympics, I think they are lame and prefer a bluebird day with 2 feet of fresh, but at least act like you have some perspective when describing people giving everything they have to compete in them.

Jeez I haven't posted anything non-troll related for quite some time, but I couldn't help but notice and appreciate the clear distinction between the credence of a few opinions above and beyond others in this thread.

Gen Y has produced a state of emotionally fragile narcissists, ill-equipped to deal with the weight of reality due to the 'yes-man', 'think positive' mentality employed by our parents. Negative feelings are alienated as character qualities and are transfixed as being unhealthy, when they are not, they are normal.
