Matt is on the B team for Team canada.
B team is basically just allowing you to be in their mjestic presence and camps.
meaning he is allowed to go lets say, to New Zealand with them, but he has to pay EVERY single fee that comes with it.
lets add it up, remember these are all estimates
-plane tickets- 2000
-lodging-750
-ski tickets-250
-coaching fee-700
-food-500
thats pretty much all i can think of right now
anyway, it adds up to 4200.
Now team Canada went twice over there this summer.
so 4200x2 =8400
now add a few other camps and some other unknown expenses and pretty much ill add up to something close to 20000.

now, I still think its funny, but hey, maybe matts really broke, i dont know.

Do you guys think Torin and all the other guys at the top of the sport have to get a job instead of training 24/7? Having to take a summer off might be too much of a disadvantage for somebody trying to compete at the highest level of the sport

The problem is that why should he get our hard earned money? Where is the line, I mean I like to fucking ski, and I'm trying to make a career of it indirectly through snowpark construction. It's my dream, and I've worked really hard at it ever since i discovered skiing at 22. And at entry level jobs in snowpark construction, you make fuck all, which means that I also bust my ass all summer so that I can pay my bills and then hopefully down the road I can make a full time living of it. Can I get some money?

The thing is, everyone's in the same boat, unfortunately for Matt he is apparently not able to convince his otherwise affluent sponsors to fucking send him to the Olympics! He must either be really fucking bad at selling himself, or his sponsors are thick as fuck to miss out on the opportunity to have their rider in the motherfuckin Olympics! It is mind boggling to me how a professional skier has come to this point. Either way, I do not find him a worthy charity. As someone said, this is also just a simple matter of choosing to either donate or not, but when you go public with stuff like this, and in this way, there's going to be a reaction. I personally find it tasteless, and it shows an odd disconnect from the Freeskiing community if he had not expected this reaction.

But as I also said in the comments, he will most likely raise his money from the gullable general public.

In conclusion, there are so many things wrong with this, on so many levels that I can't be arsed to cover them all. However Iberg's comment was also spot on adressing the issue of the relationship between the Olympics and Freeskiing in general.

I love everyone hating regardless if you're into the olympics or not. I'm not really a fan of them, but at least this dudes doing something with his life and trying to achieve his goals. The fuck is wrong with that? And what are you doing? Hating on people on ski forum.

I think this says a lot about sponsor treatment/support for 2nd tier athletes in skiing.

I say 2nd tier in no disrespect, that has nothing to do with his ability but his sponsor support. Marg isn't the 11th ranked pipe skier in the world because he's bad at skiing. Could marg do things to get more money out of his sponsors? I don't know.

There are going to be 30 guys in the pipe competition in Sochi. To say the 11th ranked guy in the world shouldn't be there because he can't afford it is bullshit.

Torin is from Aspen and well, if you grew up in Aspen you are probably well off.  Not to dis.  The point I want to make that has been absent thus far:

There seems to be three different levels of skiers committed to the sport; those from well-off families, those who bust ass all off season to ski all winter, and your everyday ski bum. 

I think all deserve respect for their dedication.

im in that bust my ass all summer to ski as much during the winter group.

If I had a large amount of cash flow and had a lot of discretionary income, I am sure i would give (not donate, donation to me is for a charity) him a bit of cash. But thats not me. Ill be lucky if I have a few hundred bucks at the end of winter honestly. I would rather be able to buy an extra lift ticket somewhere, not throw 100 bucks so a really good skier already can hopefully go to Russia.

When I first saw it earlier, It pissed me off and I commented saying that it was basically bullshit. On reflection however, I can understand why Matt's resorted to this.

His funding was cut in June so even if he got a job then, there's no way he could work enough to save 20 grand whilst doing the amount of training necessary to stand a chance at being successful in the Olympics. His sponsors aren't giving him enough money, so now he's stuck.

I know what it's like for something totally unforeseen to get in the way of your dream and you'll resort to anything to try and get it back on track. Why wouldn't you? Would I do the same in his position? Probably.

What I do think was a dumb idea though, was posting it on NS, a place full of broke ski bums who would give their left nut to be funded to ski all year. There's no chance i'm gonna donate because I need to fill my own pockets for Winter. If i was an owner of a successful business, with an Interest in Skiing then, yeh, i'd probably be quite tempted.

I think the more relevant point is that Torin is sponsored by Target. And I haven't heard anything to support this, but I'd be very surprised if anybody going for team US is paying for their own training

A-list USA aerial skiers still have to raise money for their olympic training/trips etc too.

You guys are taking this so fucking far, what's the point? You can't "work your ass off" and train for the olympics.

actually no. this hate is not warranted at all. guys like Matt are not on the same sponsorship program as say, Russ Henshaw or Nick Goepper. Matt's sponsorship is on a national level with Volkl Canada and not the international level.

the olympics are going to be expensive as hell for all athletes not just those not on the RedBull or (insert massive company here) programs. in Canada a stupid amount of government money goes to support hockey programs. if there's anything left over it will go to fund other sports like freestyle skiing, bobsled, etc... for the most part, these athletes have to pay for this by themselves. Canadian Freestyle Skiing cut funding for athletes and programs in the past couple of years so there really is no money. the "A-Team" members are doing similar things to raise money. even the RedBull athletes are doing some sort of fundraising. racing does alright because participation in organized programs is massive so more companies support it.

one athlete i personally know, his family is holding fundraisers just so they can see their son compete. the gouging of ticket prices for Sochi is ridiculous. $1950ea for tickets to the opening ceremonies, $300+ea for mogul and arial event tickets, hotels are almost impossible to find and what is available is insanely overpriced for basically a hole in the wall.

at least his sponsors are stepping up and donating product to raffle off for him. being a "pro" skier doesn't mean that you're making a living doing it. let's make that perfectly clear.

I think people are salty that someone who gets to ski all year and do what we all love for a (possible) living is asking for money. Myself included.

That being said it is his dream and therefore he is doing all he can to achieve it which is admirable. Asking NS might not have been the best seeing as we are a bunch of cheap young kids.

If he really wants to make it there he will find a way. From the looks of it, asking ns for "help" is not part of the way. I would rather give my money to someone who is going for a different dream other than being an olympic park skier. Like say if somebody wanted to go to the moon...

With respect to your last sentence, I beg to differ.

Case in point: Patrick Meek

Who the fuck is Patrick Meek you ask...? A 2nd/3rd tier long-distance Olympian speed skater, who also works with me in bell/valet at Waldorf Astoria Park City. As far as I know, speed skating has even less money in it than skiing (with Apollo Ono being the exception). Other than the USOC, Patrick's 'sponsor' money is non-existant. However, in order to meet the rigorous demands of his team's training schedule while still being able to afford food/transportation/housing, he enrolled in the USOC work-partnership program. The USOC set Pat up with both a job and a place to live at our hotel, with the only incentive on Waldorf's end being good PR, and maybe a small logo on his speed-suit if he makes it.

I would be very surprised if Team Canada doesn't offer a similar program to athletes who may not get the monetary support their training requires. I understand Margett's situation is probably different from a travel/logistical standpoint, but I think most of his current money problems stem from a lack of foresight (no disrespect intended) on both his and Team Canada's part. Regardless, the time has passed for him to be able to raise enough cashflow via work-partnership, so I do get that this is in fact his only viable option. Though I personally will not be donating I wish him the best of luck in making it to Sochi; he deserves to be there, no matter where the money comes from.

Awesome to hear the USOC is helping your Coworker out with that situation. But, like you pointed out in this case 1) the time has come and gone for such a program, and 2) such a program doesn't exist for that situation (yet...). I think if we knew there was such an opportunity and we still saw an athlete crying for money while sitting on their ass, then we'd be free to ridicule them and tell them they shouldn't get shit. However, I don't think Matt or any other athlete had access to such a program, and like pointed out in a few other posts, are simply doing what they can with this little time left to get the money.
