Editing 1080 30p h264 on Windows

I am trying to edit video that I shot on my Iphone in Premiere CS4 on Windows 7.

My computer has no problem playing the files that I imported.

When I import the files into Premiere, the computer lags, it is almost impossible to preview the files in Premiere and impossible to scrub through the files.
I can cut the the clips on my timeline and export the file which my computer has no problems playing.

I updated my h264 codec and experienced the same issues in Premiere.

I tried converting the videos to Cineform with the Gopro Studio App that I downloaded. I still can't edit in Premiere.

Does anyone have any advice on editing files like this? I really want to edit some of this footage and I am not afraid to try new software.

I am not biased to CS4, I use it because I prefer it over Sony Vegas and I torrented the CS4 pack a few years ago.

My computer should be fast enough to handle this. I am running Windows 7 Professional, I have 8 gb of ram, and a 2 ghz processor.


Does anyone have any similar experience or advice?

Convert to a different format, premiere/any other NLE has a hard time with h264, cs6/cc isnt too bad but cs4 is decently old.

With my limited experience on editing: H264 is very compressed and therefore actually requires more power to process. Then a larger less compressed file.

I mainly convert everything in DNxHD because I'm an idiot who was once told that was the best and stuck with it. Works for me do on my Mac & PC.

use mpeg streamclip, convert to prores.

You can convert to prores on windows.


Use DNxHD, its very similar to prores.

Why do you keep saying this? the first time I thought it was just a typo but I've seen it at least 5/6 times, I'm now not sure if you think it's a word or if I'm the retard.

Is there an easy way to convert H264 to DNxHD without Avid? Sorry if its an apparent answer but my 5 minutes of googling looks like you need an Avid product to transcode.

You can download the codecs for free, google "DNxHD codec" and then you should be able to use adobe media encoder or mpeg streamclip to convert.

So.... Even after downloading and updating all my codecs, I don't have the option to encode to DNxHD with Adobe Encoder. I am starting to think that maybe CS4 is a little dated?

I did download the StreamClip Program and tried it once. It crashed on me and I have not had a chance to come back to it yet.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good Windows based program? I can torrent just about anything and am pretty good with NLE systems (I have used both Final Cut and Premiere in the past)

Just looking for suggestions here, or if anyone knows a way to get the DNxHD codec to show up in encoder that would be sweet as I wouldnt have to spend time downloading new software.

I had this problem for awhile. Still comes back every once in awhile. Pisses me off. For me its cause my native clips never matched the sequence. Which made my pc struggle so much more. So now I always film in the same why I set my sequence up.

Just got Premiere CC. I imported some H264 footage and it previews perfectly.

I should have just updated my software.
