going to the McConkey premier in london on monday and was just wondering about why you have to disengage your skis for a ski base ?

You don't have to release them. Some people land with skis on. I believe that in his case he wanted to release them and it took too long to do so, which delayed his chute :(

McConkey died doing a wingsuit jump, you have to get rid of the skis, they have too much drag and you just fall.
