Here is one who boasts 99% goes directly to "our programs." These "programs" appear to be costly to run.

no, you never donate because you are selfish and use this list to rationalize your actions to yourself. Just because some charities are bad doesn't mean you shouldn't donate to any charities.

inb4 some half ass excuse about how you bought a sandwich for some homeless guy once and "give' in many other ways

The amount some of these companies actually donate is a problem, but i think spending money on advertising and even hiring good executives is worth it in the long because it lead to more awareness and if done correctly more donations

and for the record, i totally agree with what you just wrote. i've donated and raised funds for years for breast cancer awareness and the cancer society itself. i also used to volunteer for habitat for humanity back in the day. then i found out that the group here in my city had two people on the board that used the groups money as their own personal ATM-gas for personal cars, groceries, dental work, etc. worst part of that was that other board members knew about it, made them pay some of the money back but never kicked them off the board....those two members are still on the board today and still pilfer money.

CharityNavigator.org is another great resource.

But I hate pink ribbons. Boobs just get the money because they're fun. I mean who doesn't like boobs? (well maybe gay guys, but I digress) Heart Disease kills magnitudes more women than breast cancer but isn't as sexy or fun and is actually much easier to prevent (exercise, eat right).

I used to canvas for a variety of different charities (MSF, CNIB, Ottawa Humane Society, Amnesty) and you can always tell how shitty a charity is based on its administration costs. MSF (Doctor's without borders) is a pretty good one and have an admin cost of about 2.5%. United Way on the other hand which is a piece of shit, has an administration cost of about 20% - which means 20% of your money is going directly into some rich fucks pocket.

Always look at the admin cost before donating.

The churches I have attended use some of that money to cover costs (staff, building costs/maintenance, some into a savings/emergency fund) and pretty much the rest goes local (food programs, ESL classes, etc., community organizations) national and international organizations (schools, wells, orphanages, clinics, etc). All organizations these churches have partnered with have been chosen carefully based on the work they are doing/where the money goes. Buildings aren't anything special, pastors/staff aren't living extravagantly and they are serving the community.

Granted this is not true for all churches and those that try to extort those around them piss me off, but a lot are doing good, practical work in their local communities without stuffing Jesus down anyone's throat.

Yeah but you pretty much just showed that it has all the makings of a business so i believe that in the eyes of the law it should be treated as one. I also am surrounded by mormons who put the money towards extravagant temples and seminary buildings at every high school, which is another thing that bugs me

How is that different than a charity? They pay for staff, building maintenance/operating costs and provide service for the community as well. These churches do not charge people money and operate on donations just like any other non-profit. Extra money is saved for helping in times of need (someone's house burns down, southern Alberta flood disaster this summer, etc).

go through your churches fiance records, i guarantee people are taking a salary, and saving some of the money they get. being that they don't pay taxes you'd be shock how much money those churches make and have to throw around. if all churches donate so much money then they should count it as a tax write off you all live here, pay your taxes.

Yup, but I could honestly care less about donating that. The church does a great job on the humanitarian side of things. You can hate the mormons all you want and say that our beliefs are ridiculous, but when it comes down to it, all religion aside, no one can hate on the churches humanitarian work.

Fuck all these "say something about islam bitch" type statements that people make. Like you can say anything you want about christians but if you hassle muslims it'll start a ruckus. Yes, the people on staff take a salary and pay income tax just like everyone else. They need to be able to pay their bills and support their families too. People who work for charities are in the same boat. At least one of the churches I've gone to has an outside audit done every year to ensure the money is being used well. Each year the report comes back positive.
