First car for ski bum?

A van, a bus or something like that. It should be big enough for a bed and some eating/living space.

Yeah my friend has one Ive definately been wanting an outback. But I just found out the girl I was gonna do this with has 2 family members with houses like 10 minutes from powder mountain hahahaha

Stuck? I wouldn't mind being stuck with one of them.

That said, I just bought a Forester, first car. For me it's perfect - great on the highway or shitty forest service roads, enough room for ski/bike/climbing gear for a few people or sleeping for 1 or 2 if its someone you don't mind being a little cozy with. Gobbles gas in the city like nobody's business though.

You want 4-wheel, all-wheel or at least front-wheel drive. If you get a rear-wheel drive sedan you won't make any friends on the road up to the ski area.

You want room for all your gear, for your homies, and probably room to sleep too. That's why hatchbacks, wagons, Outbacks, SUVs and vans are all popular.

If gas mileage is a concern, pop a roof rack on a Subaru and you're good to go. If rugged manliness is a factor, get a 4wd truck and build your own custom canopy. If getting laid is a factor, you can't go wrong with the van.

Whatever you buy is probably going to go through some abuse, so invest in durability and reliability rather than cosmetics or fancy bell-and-whistle features.

i just bought one of these as my first car and its actually pretty decent. good on gas and has tons of space in it. awd will get you up those slick roads when its puking and others are getting stuck as long as you have winters. get roof racks and youl be golden. if you have a sled thats a completely different story, go for a crew cab truck instead

Because Audis are so well known as an attainable first vehicle. Cheap to service too.

Imports, AWD, Cargo Space. Remember those things and you're set.

Assuming you buy used and if you can afford to, also keep in mind that things like belts and gaskets start to go at about 10 years old and if you buy it with more than 200000 km on it you probably won't get much when you want to sell it. Oh and have it inspected or you could be boiling away in used car repair hell right quick.

and enough power to climb hills, and snow tires to put that power down.

I live in the Southern Adirondacks and don't have a sled, so that's a big twist. There are all weather tires currently on the car and because I don't have a ski rack on top due to a sunroof, the plastic interior is scratched by skis. I don't get my Learner's for another 4-5 months though, so I'll be learning how to drive in one and end up driving one until it dies out. The newer CR-V's don't have much room in the trunk compared to years past, so the newer models IMO are probably not the best for living the ski bum lifestyle.

Ski bums will need something they can sleep in comfortably in a pinch that gets great mileage and good traction.

i had one, and it couldnt hold 55mph going up to Mt. Hood. 1.8L is not much power.

i sold it within a month.

maybe if you do a 2.2 or 2.5 swap, but thats a lot of work...

if youre in drivers ed then I'm guessing you're like 16 right? so I assume you wont be living out of it.. if this is the case i suggest a Subaru outback or forester. I mean when I lived in Chapel Hill Subarus were few and far between and generally referred to as butch lesbo cars.. but when you get to a resort in New England or out west 1 in 5 cars is gonna be a suby.

However if my previous assumption is wrong and you are going to be living out of this thing then follow my lead. I plan to be purchasing a utility van to live out of for the winter

Cars from this century are generally overrated. I would go for a mid 80s toyota or subaru. Or, get a ford e250 from the 90s, those are pretty sweet ski bum cars, and as long as you got some windows in there, most people wont think your a pedophile.

Honda Element - AWD, 16-20mpg, seats fold down into a decent sleeping space, seats fold up/removable for an even better sleeping space, roof rack capable. I have had mine for 4 years now she has done 2 round trips to hood and countless trips to VT only 2 major problems (ball joint and starter). Best option imo if your not looking to cash out a VW van. I live in NE PA for distance reference.

Spot on, my mountain uses these for general errand between shops and they're fantastic, take the seats out in the back and setup some shelves with mattress on top and idealy some ski racks, although thats all costly (we are ski bums after all).

I've got a Subie forester which i was luckily enough to get with that full setup for a good price and love it!

Any kind of Subaru/AWD Volvo wagon.

I'm on my third vehicle, being a JDM STi. With the seats folded down, and the bottom half of the back seat pulled out, I can sleep a night or two before I get really really sick of sleeping curled up.

Hatchback! Mazda or Subaru. I have a 2010 Mazda3 Hatchback and I love it. You can find mazdas for really good price and they know whats up - great performance, good stock audio system, and its got fixed points in the roof for roof racks. If you don't have a rack, it can get kind of tight when you have 3 or more people, but I've done 5 without it (not comfortably but functionally).

I mentioned subaru because I've heard good things about them and they have AWD. My hatchback has front-wheel, but it holds up in snow.
