Best Universities Near Ski Resorts?

What are some universities that are close to mountains? I am a grade 11 from Saskatchewan (Yes, I know), and am looking towards post secondary and am unsure of area of study yet. What are some of your suggestions? Both US and Canada.

UBC and UofC are the best good schools in canada that have really good mountains nearby.

middlebury and dartmouth are great, colby college, bates and bowdoin. USC has one of the best competitive ski clubs in the usa. westminster in SLC.

just a little advice, don't make skiing your biggest factor when you decide on a college, if you are serious about academics i would not go to MSU or U of U.

or UBC okanagan.
I'm not sure how the schooling varies but it's less costly to live in kelowna than vancouver and you still have big white and silverstar

what makes it terrible?

obviously not quite on the same level as UBC or UofT and maybe a bit too much influence from the oil industry but it's still one of canada's top research universities.

Why would he not consider U of U or MSU if he's serious about academics? Both good schools although MSU has more of a party scene I dont see why those arent good options.

"Good" is totally dependent on what you're studying.

Also keep in mind that everyone who pretends to know things about university rankings is just buying the macleans canadian uni ranking issue and pulling their "facts" off there. The only bearing a university involved in research will have on your undergrad experience is higher fees, professors that care more about their research than you learning, and stupid expenses that go towards funding more research. Just because a school is ranked highly as a medical doctoral school does not mean its the best place to take your undergrad.

I did a year at UBC's science program, and while the people I was surrounded with were pretty awesome, my tuition fees were wasted because the professors were more or less incompetent when it came to teaching and they pulled everything directly out of the textbook. I absolutely hated most of my classes, as well as the size of the school and the size of the city.

You say you're not sure what you want to take and yet you're going to university? Post-secondary is an opportunity to study amazing things, but you need to be committed if you want to do well and get the most out of the $60 000 you will likely pay for it. Do NOT go to school if you don't know why you're going.

If you aren't sure if you want to go to college or university (which are different in Canada for you americans) you should totally check out Selkirk College in the kootenays. There is some awesome skiing at both the Nelson campus and the Castlegar campus.

Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops B.C. has sweet adventure and tourism programs and is close to Sun Peaks Ski resort.

Laurier has a ski and snowboard club that I know goes to Blue Mountain. I don't know too much about them but they are in the tri-city area with lots of other universities and colleges all in close proximity to one another. So you can go through a different nearby school's club if it's better. Also more schools means more woman and more woman means you can spread your seed and not fail generations of hard work by your ancestors. Whatever you do: DO NOT FAIL YOUR ANCESTORS.

Shameless self-promotion: Carleton University has a legit ski and snowboard program. We have biweekly jib sessions on campus and we go to Tremblant every Sunday. We actually manage to get around 3 coach buses packed with students every Sunday; It's a pretty happening place with very friendly people. We also host lots of rail competitions intermittently throughout the year. uOttawa is part of our ski program and as such they go on the Tremblant trips with us. Carleton also won the Red Bull Jib Cup aka we have lots of park rats.

However, behind enemy lines (in Quebec) and just a few hours down the road are McGill and Concordia who go to lots of other locations every week (Jay Peak, Tremblant, Mt Saint Anne etc.)

Instead of listing off Canadian schools and seeing as how you have lots of time to decide, I would just find good schools that have your program and then look into their ski and snowboard clubs. Message their club executives what mountains they go to, how often, and how much it all costs. They are pretty easy to find on facebook.

Whistler is like 1.5 hours, easy day trip.

Northshore hills (Grouse, Seymour, Cypress) are about an hour by bus, about 30 minutes by car (varies a lot depending on traffic/which hill etc)

pretty much all universities have great academics if you apply yourself towards your degree and what you want to get out of it afterwards.

MSU is kind of well known for its engineering department, but other programs are very good as well; you really just have to be passionate/excel in your chosen field and your college 'career' will pay off. just cause you have a degree and college transcript doesn't equal your dream job... it takes a lot of work during school and after school to transfer an education into a career. for 95% of people, jobs don't just open up for you, but don't be discouraged--start small/entry level and work your way into it. serving jobs might pay more, but, as I'm realizing, aren't good for advancing in the long run. no matter how good you were in school, there's no way you're better for a job than someone who's been in the field for a few more years. experience and connections are everything.

bridger and big sky are sick as fuck. if you embrace Bridger, it will give you the confidence to ski any line anywhere--the sky's the limit; it will truly make you a better skier than any ski area you've ever skied (big, absurd, but truly reasonable claim). Big Sky has all types of terrain you would want, but it's farther, and for the absurd amount of 'acreage', there really isn't a huge amount of great skiable in-bound terrain compared to other ski areas of similar size. Montana is not the place to go for park skiing, though big sky/whitefish have very solid efforts--the jumps aren't bad, but are just not up to the caliber of utah, co, tahoe, etc.

Overall, though, if U of U has your specific degree program, NOTHING will beat the selection of mountains there and how close you are to them, and the town is really fun too. Seriously, brighton, alta, snowbird, and snow basin have the best snow and funnest terrain I've ever skied, and park city was the most fun park I've ever been to..brighton has a sweet park too. In my opinion, SLC has easily the best skiing in the country. It's a pretty big metropolis though, so you have to like that.

Colorado's sick, both Denver and Boulder, but the distance from the mountains puts them at a severe disadvantage. Plus, in my opinion, nothing along the I-70 corridor is all that great. If there's a program at those schools that really fits you, then go for it though.

if you're unsure about a major/degree program at all, I'd recommend taking a year off and trying out one of these places without going to school. get into a school, accept admission, and defer for a year; you can always back out if you want. 10k+/year is a huge investment so make sure it's something that you really want to spend an absurd amount of money on, even if your parents are paying for it. Note that that's cheap and in the end some college careers will pay for a pretty nice house in full in some areas.

I go to UBC and I'm also from Saskatchewan, so I was kind of in your place a few years ago. We're about an hour and a half away from Whistler, but there are also a few closer resorts like Grouse and Seymour. The student price for a season pass at Whistler is only around $500, which is unreal. There's always lots of people driving to/from Whistler in the winter, so finding a ride is never a problem. The ski/board club here is pretty rad too -- definitely the best club on campus. Hope to see you out here dude

Johnson State is between both Stowe and Jay Peak. Also Vermont is worth driving around and jibbing/ skiing some awesome mountains that are small, but have a lot to offer.

I don't think very many people would agree with this. If you ask for the top 3 universities in western canada, almost everyone would say UBC, UofA and UofC, probably in that order.

Come out to Montana State in Bozeman! We're by Bridger Bowl, Big Sky Resort, and Moonlight Basin. (Which is now owned by Big Sky.) It's a good school If you're looking at engineering, snow science, chem, or other research fields.
