I was recently looking through park city's FAQ page when i noticed an odd answer to a question. it dealt with moguls and where they go in the summer.

Q: Where do you put the moguls in the summer?

A: Moguls are created when a run is left ungroomed and skiers and boarders making turns through the powder cut up the run. The turns cut grooves into the run and the accumulation of grooves turns into "bumps" that are known as moguls.

obviously this is incorrect as we all know that the moguls are stored in the shed just like the snowcats are every summer, and then placed back onto the difficult trails before the snow falls again. how can this business get away with such terrible false information?

Yeah, that won't happen... as awesome as it would be to have PCMR on the epic pass. PC is here to stay, even if they're "evicted" off the land they're leasing.

Also, why the fuck are you looking through the FAQ's on a ski resort's website?

I have heard of some places over seas that literally have small mounds they put down and then build the snow over them.

Lutsen resort on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota has the cats make the moguls, they have some sort of mogul groomer I think. But I've never seen any moguls more identical and in a perfect line as these ones, not even in the Olympic moguls courses.

This is a common misconception--there is no such thing as a "mogul groomer" Generally competition moguls are either skied in by placing small flags into the ground and turning around them, or they are made by a regular old groomer. The groomer makes a bunch of rollers the length of the cat (with the grooming tail up), then goes back and pushes a roller the width of the snowcat up 1 half roller length. the result is a checkerboard shape of "moguls" that are the width of a snowcat, and half the length of a snowcat apart. As you can imagine, since the grooming tail wasnt down, this is not corduroy, and it ends up looking like a giant checkerboard rubble field of death. After this process, a bunch of snow is blown on the moguls and they fill in, resulting in a surface that looks like an egg crate mattress. The egg crate mattress is then skied by a bunch of people, and the moguls begin to take actual mogul shape, instead of a smooth styrofoamy surface that results after blowing snow.

How many skiers does it typically take skiing runs down a competition mogul field before it's perfect for the comp? Always been curious about this.

all depends on the conditions, but in the spring/summer like 10 people skiing the same flags for an entire day will ski them in enough. in the winter at shitty places like waterville valley you pretty much cant even ski them in and people just chip away at the ice to make ruts. when the are seeded with a cat and have the egg crate mattress effect like 10 people in 4 hours can carve enough shape into them
