Yeah, you read it right... we're making a magazine! I'm not going to go into too much detail right now, but here's a quick highlight of some of the important factors that separates our magazine from a traditional print publication.

- Made up of user uploaded content, curated by member ratings
- 100 pages, large format, thick paper stock, minimalist design
- Photo and word payouts for contributors
- Full newsstand distribution across North America
- Direct purchase available through NS Store and select shops

Here's how this Q&A works:

1) You post your question in here
2) You upvote questions you like
3) I choose my favourite questions and answer them
4) I post the Q&A in the news section
5) You guys post more questions in the comment section -- I answer them!

I really don't get what besides pictures could translate into a mag format.

How are you determining the qualifications for "user uploaded content?" Will orange names be ineligible? Are there any steps you're taking to ensure there is a diverse sampling from all the contributions that have been made to NS and not just large chunks from certain individuals?

Pictures, threads, news, and videos... along with a in-depth feature being written by the year's top long form journalist.

There will be a handful of other pages in the magazine, but this is the meat and potatoes.

Without going into too much detail, we've taken steps to ensure diversity throughout... but you need to understand that we're building this thing using data -- the data you guys fed the system over the last year. We want this to be the best representation of what you guys (the community) want to see.

Can you give me a more exact example of what you would define as a non-established vs professional?

The onus is on the community to determine what makes it in. I have zero say in what does and doesn't make the cut.. for example, one of my photos was very close to making it in, but it didn't -- and there's nothing I can do about it.

Every piece of content (other than the feature) is already on the site... and we don't plan on changing that anytime soon. We're simply curating the best of the best and rewarding our content creators for uploading the kind of media that our members enjoy consuming.

Yes -- one feature (written by the year's top long form journalist), along with a few other pages created by us (such as a contents page, about / contribute spread, editor's note, etc.)

With articles for the mag, how many are planned(are they planned?), are topics already determined? Could a member write an article (assuming it was to standard),submit, and try their luck?

Say a member wants to get his photography in the next issue. what should they know about how content is selected? And how can anyone, even if they choose not to upload content, play a role in what makes the cut?

Zero are planned! It's simply the highest rated articles that make the cut.

The only exception is a feature -- which is written by the highest rated long form journalist of the last year. He/she has full control over what he/she chooses to write about.

Wow I can see this going great places. But what if the highest rated photo (which i assume would be the cover photo, as long is it wasnt a meme or something stupid), was also the cover photo of freeskier, powder, etc?

Also, I assume there will be industry advertisements in this magazine?

If photos are already published (typical)magazines don't want them. That's why you never see shots from magazines before they are published.
The Newschoolers magazine creates a really interesting situation with top photographers who could either save their photos for magazine submissions, or upload them to NS where the members would decide if it's good enough to go in. You could even potentially be rewarded/compensated twice if you were a member of one of the media programs and you made it to the magazine.
