I'm looking foward to change my dslr camera set up to switch for a video camera... what you guys are filming with? Any toughts on the sony fs100 (my personal favorite right now)

Why do you wanna get an fs100? What do you need your camera to do that your DSLR doesn't? What's your budget?

My budget is around 4000$. The fs100 because of the great low light performance, the 1080/60, the image quality and i want to upgrade to a video camera not a dslr. I mainly film skiing and action sports but i often have some video contracts on the side!

If you have the budget then thats okay, but honestly you probably don't NEED an fs100.

Does your $4000 include selling your current gear?

What sort of feedback are you looking for? I love it, I don't mind the size i do wish sometime I had a dslr sized cam but I used to use an hvx so the fs100 was lighter and smaller than that.

They key is really tweaking your in camera settings, it makes a huge difference.

I mean if you're putting stuff on the internet, its not a huge deal. I havent worked much with any dslrs but unless you want something to take photos with, you could stick with your cheaper dslr.

I feel like you just want to upgrade cameras to make your videos look better, no? You really should invest in better glass and stabilization before just spending $4k on a camera that you probably don't need.

Already have a pretty descent set up (lens and stab)... Like i said i'm upgrading mainly my camera set up for our next year ski movie. And i will probably study in the cinema field in university Thanks man i was just looking for some feedback on the camera positive and or negative

I don't really have really anything negative to say about the camera, it does the job for me. But, not sure if its going to really fill the void that you may be looking for, just saying.

Not exactly 100% relevant but I just got an fs700. I love it for the most part. Not the greatest codec but if you lik Evan said tweak the camera can get lovely images. The codec just falls apart when grading hard. But I would say wait honestly the market is changing so fast I bet at nab this year there will be something that fits your needs and more

I have been shooting an fs-100 a fair bit lately and overall it is a great camera. Image quality is not noticeably different from a DSLR but it will get better low light and you wont have to deal with the aliasing and moire that you do on a dslr which is very nice depending on what you are shooting.

My one beef with this camera is the ergonomics are slightly weird, and the buttons/ touch screen are kind of cheap feeling for lack of a better word.

A big annoyance I had to start with is that in order to get the 60fps you have to push the slow motion button instead of just picking the frame rate this obviously is not a huge flaw but every time you go back into playback mode or turn the camera on and off it automatically reverts to 24fps and being used to shooting on Epics and DSLRS I would always forget to push the slow motion button and miss getting a shot I wanted. Like I said not a huge deal but something to think about when your out there with i!

Overall a good solid camera, I am doing a shoot with the fs-700 next week and am excited to see how that shoots!

I would say if your coming from a canon dslr it is quite a bit better image (basing of what i have seen. Never have shot with this cam. I have shot with the fs700 witch is similar image.).

One thing to think about though is it does no have built in nds. Those are a lifesaver for me and love that feature in a camera. I would maybe look at the af101 it has built in nds and the image is not bad.

Also like JAHrig said the ergonomics are awkward, but so is a dslr i think the ergonomics are a lot better than a dslr.(again basing of of fs700 witch is very similar in body). The eye piece that comes with is giant and does not need to be that big. There is tutorials online on how to shorten it.

I like that it uses sd cards that is nice. You can record and edit in a nice easy workflow. But you also loose the ability to have very flexible files when grading. The avchd codec is not great, but certainly better than h264 on the canon dslrs.

I love my FS100. It really is a great camera.

Here is my piece of advice tho. If you have a total budget of $4k, don't spend it all on the camera itself and a kit lens. Take full advantage of that $4k and get as much equipment as possible.

Get a DSLR (perhaps a 6D since you want low light performance or a %D MrkIII) and spend the rest on quality glass, stabilization and audio. With the FS100, stabilization is an important as it is with any DSLR. So if you don't have a quality tripod and/or glidecam, with $4k, you could get just about everything you need with a full DSLR kit.

One other thing about going this route, is that when you have gotten enough work.saved up your money again, you can buy the FS100 (or whatever takes its place down the road) and make it your A-cam and then have a quality full frame DSLR as your B-cam and all of your equipment should still work with your FS.

In terms of the ergonomics...after using this camera constantly for over a year and a half now, I actually kind of like it. The only thing I find myself not liking, is the placement of the LCD screen...but that is only occasionally, at most times, I find I like where it is. You learn the placement of buttons fast, so that's not much of an issue. Also, in relation to the above post, I am not sure what he means. You can go into your settings and change the frame rate to any frame rate in like 3-5 seconds...Probably the same amount of time it takes to press the S&Q button and wait for it to load/switch frame rates. ND's are an issue, but just buy some quality variable ND's...something that you should have anyways if you are shooting with a DSLR.

For sure I'm not saying it is hard to change the frame rate I just found it a little bit hard to get used to changing it back up o 60fps every time you exit and enter back into shooting mode. Maybe I'm not making sense but I guess what I'm saying is it is just a system that took me a bit longer to get use to.

oooh, yea. Agreed, it definitely takes a lot of hands on time with the camera to get comfortable with it because of its layout.

Thanks boys. I have a pretty descent lens and stab set up (canon 24-105mm, sony 16mm, tokina 11-16) glidecam, mafrono 501 and a slider. I think i'll go with the fs100 with the metabone adapter that look pretty amazing!

$4k budget ≠> $4k camera

A fraction of your equipment budget should go towards a camera body.

A couple years back I had a $5k budget.

Q: Guess how much I spent on a camera body?

A: $500, and the remainder was necessary for support/audio/glass, all of which contributed much more to the image/aural quality than the camera body did.

It's better but not a ton better.

He means when he maxes out blacks or white or something ridiculous it gets lots of banning and pixelation, etc. Basic grading is just fine.

Well if you try to grade hard you will se artifacts banding and so on. You can not push and pull the image verry far in post. It is allot better than h264. In all honesty not the hugest fan of the image out of the fs700 and fs100. They can produce great images (i do like it and enjoy shooting and coloring with my fs700) but im not in love with the look. This is just personal preference. I find the look to be very videoish and harsh. Its not smooth and rich. If your not in need of 60fps i would look at the c100. Still the same codec but the image on the c100 in my opinion is much richer warmer and smoother. Its very similar to that of the c300 witch has beautiful skintones and color. Also the low light is rad with the new firmware you get up to 80,00 iso in the c100. But the bigest downfall and why i went fs700 was no 60p.

I would go for the fs100 if you like the look and what you have seen out of the camera. I think that it is a great cam and im sure you can get some great results out of it.

You can literally make the image look like anything you want, i KNOW you use different profile settings and i KNOW you grade shit, you really are gonna bitch about the image it produces? like jesus christ dude take the microscope off of your shots.

BTW the c100/300/500 are sick but they are so overpriced. the c100 is what $5500? the fs100 is like $4k now and IMO is better, but thats my opinion.

Dude you need to relax. I am letting him know what I think of the cam. I mean ya you can make the image look like what ever you want. But with a limited abchd codec it can really bake into the image. I mean ya the camera is just a tool but having a camera that can get you a look you love till death is awesome. I loved the look my gh2 the way the image was smooth and rich really gave me more spunk when it came to editing and color work.

All I'm saying is each camera has its look and for me the fact line is nothing special in terms of image.

And ya the canons line is over priced. But after shooting with one I loved the cameras. Really well thought out. Truly a good camera line.

My fs100 image is so different than it is now. I dunno, I feel like its unfair to say a camera has "one" look.

Verry true. It is unfair. Personly I think your stuff with the fs100 is some of the best I've seen in the action sports world. Are you shooting a flat profile and grading or just dialing in camera?

i recently bought one as a b cam... its very good in comparison to any dslr... i was suprised at how in depth the picture profile settings are, its very capable. my only gripe is that it is not weather sealed to the slightest... not that the 700 is any better but i had it out on a shoot in some rain and without proper rain gear your pretty much dead in the gutter... really worried about using it or the 700 on a snowy day in the BC... other than that... worth every penny... having capabilities to do in camera slow mo from 60p converted to 24p FX(highest bitrate 24p) is pretty much worth all the money...

do you understand the idea of the picture profile... from you saying i dont like the image of the 100 and the 700 which is a fairly ignorant statement, it seems to me all you need to do is find a suitable pp and and use the camera for its purpose.. its not a fucking 4k cinema cam... comparing it to a c100/300 is stupid, there completely different ranges of camera of course they are better... and if you were at all a decent shooter you would have no problem making it look not "harsh and videoish"...

Believe me i have tried to play around with the picture profiles and can get something nice But it still is a little harsh in my eyes. You can defintly fix it in post. Its perfectly capible of getting great images. But all i was doing is giving an honest review of the camera. I find it in nature to be very harsh and videoish.

Its not a 4k cam? are you serious? haha The fs700/100 is perfectly capable of being compared to the canon c100. How is it not? similar price points and features. I like the c100 picture alot better. Does it mean i am going to make so much better films if i had that image quality and my films will suck with my fs700? no way.

When someone asks for a review or thoughts is it ignorant as you say to not give them honest opinions? I gave him my two sence as i see it. From my experience with the camera.

And really if i were at all a decent shooter? Really? I can get great images out of my fs700 i love it. Such a fun cam. Does it mean its perfect? No.

Man i say one bad thing about the cameras you guys loveand have, and now im an idiot?
