Yeah! UNR geology major here. I'm a little late to this because almost everyone else I know at UNR has posted, but heres my .02
UNR is great for earth sciences. Like some of the best in the country. I switched to geology this year from mining engineering.
Academics are great, if you're in certain departments. Engineering, biz, nursing and of course earth science are some of the best on the west coast. People talking shit about academics are ignorant.
Reno itself is what you make of it. Around campus is decent, but there are some shithole spots around town. Downtown can be shitty or super fun depending what youre doing and who youre with.
I love the outdoors and I'm outside all the time. Theres a ton of spots in the surrounding area for everything. Great skiing that is super close, camping, motocross, skating, hiking, biking...
I'm assuming you'll be in the dorms if you go. I really enjoyed the res halls. I was in one of the newer ones and it was really nice. Theyre what you make of them too. If you wanna have fun then youll have fun.
I was born and grew up in Reno so I'm used to everything, but its a great college.
