I'm not a big fan of either city. Reno is really sketchy in parts but it does have some great food and the school is really nice. Best burger ever is in Reno. Lots of my friends go there and they really like it. I don't know enough about SLC to say much but the short time I spent there nothing really stood out.

Oh and Reno has the worst drivers in the country so if you go there keep your eyes peeled

Nah, the awful awful is overrated. It's good but it's not great. It has so much hype because of how big it is. Juicy's off of Wells Street, that's the best burger I've ever had

so I am coming from Colorado but while im in slc, i will be touring the university. although i have a few questions that i doubt their website will answer and are childish but relevant, first coming from Colorado I love my bud what is that scene like. Second is the school as dry as everybody would like you to believe? i have all of my academic questions answered just not every thing else.

I go to school at U of U and completely forget about the "mormon thing" till someone on NS brings it up.
So no, its not a problem besides that it scares a lot of cool people from moving out here and hence sort of a lack of a "party scene" or other stuff cool kids do, and even then if you're in with the right people, thats not a problem.

The only thing I know about that is my friend who goes to Utah State in Logan says that all the liquor in Utah is from the Trader Joes in Carson City

Depends on the Major you're in. Some are pretty good. And 50% mormon for a university as large as U of U is a pretty substantial number for something like that

Read on. I say it's not a problem but when you're deciding on living in a location where the majority of people are something you are not, you have to be sure that you can handle it. It has nothing to do with being Mormon, it has to do with being in the minority

It has nothing to do with the city. It's the flagship university. Like Cal, Michigan, Bama, all of them just go by the state name.

Anywho, Nevada and UofU are fairly comparable if you're looking from a lifestyle point of view. The mormon thing is going to be as obvious as you make it. If you don't pay attention and hang out with people who drink and smoke, you won't tell. If you make every conversation about religion, it's all you'll focus on.

Reno gets a bad rep because 90 percent of people who say that shit have only experienced two days of Reno and they were downtown. It's a great place to be, really fun dorm life, and tons of cheap housing within riding distance of campus. Even downtown can be a blast if you know where to go.

In terms of Academics, you need to look at field of study. Nevada has it's shit ass aspects that drag them down, but there are also some really excellent programs there. The exact same statement can be applied to UofU.

In the end, you really can't go wrong with either, as long as you go in with the right attitude.

It's a joke I have with him. I don't care if you call it Nevada out of shorthand but I'm going to make fun of you if you do it out of embarrassment for the city, which my friends do (but really they don't care). They try to hide the fact that they live in Reno now, it is my duty to remind them

I'm in my first year at U of U, living on campus. The upside of living in dorms is that you're living with a lot of kids from out of state who, for the most part, are not Mormon. Definitely easy to meet other skiers and kids who have the same interests as you if you're friendly and make conversation.

Party scene seems to be based on if you are willing to find a party, or not. You can definitely find one if you look around, but you won't be surrounded by parties, either.

My classes have been enjoyable and well taught (so far). If you are interested in a business major, look into applying for the Business Scholars program. If you're not thinking about a business major, still keep the U in consideration.

Campus is nice, skiing is good, and there are plenty of things to do in SLC if you have some motivation to get off campus and find them!

After living in SLC for going on three years, this has never been an issue. Maybe if you plan on spending a lot of time in Provo for whatever reason, but there isn't really a reason to if you're not Mormon. The only thing that even comes close is having some good restaurants closed on Sundays. I've been really happy with my time in Salt Lake.

Thats pretty much what I expected. I loved Reno when I lived there but honestly didn't pay much attention to the school except for college sports. If it makes a difference Im thinking about Geology, Geological Engineering, or Hydrology.

One reason to consider the U is that In-state tuiton is easy to get. Live in the state over the summer after your freshman year and you qualify for in-state (6k at year, cheapest in pac 12). For most, it costs less to do that than to stay in their home state paying in state.

USU is 48% The U is closer to 35% because the majority of Mormons in that area go to UVU or the Y

i'd say i prefer salt lake over reno. they're both pretty cool and skiing's pretty close to each, but I like the resorts in utah and the snow is way better. can't really comment on the academic side though.

reno definitely gets a bad rap, though, it's much cooler than i had preconceived.

I also disagree with this quite a bit. I grew up in Ohio, so was used to going to partys at OSU, OU, UC, and I can honestly say that coming from that I was not disappointed a bit with the party scene at the U. While it is true there isn't one street that you can count on having open parties every night, there has not been a single weekend through 4 years of college that I have wanted to party and haven't been able to find one. Plus, once youre 21 you can go to the bars, which I would also say is underrated in SLC.

oh and I didn't even mention the outdoors. Some of the best skiing/rockclimbing/mountain biking/fishing/backpacking/hiking you can get anywhere right in our backyard. It's the best feeling in the world knowing that I can have a stressful day of classes and just leave and be catching trout in 20 minutes or skiing in 30, or be mountain biking literally right outside my front door.

UNR. I'm here now and born and raised here. if you know the little ins and outs of the mountains around here you will never want to leave. if you stay downtown a lot you'll probably want to kill yourself. Tahoe is seriously reason enough to come here

Yeah! UNR geology major here. I'm a little late to this because almost everyone else I know at UNR has posted, but heres my .02

UNR is great for earth sciences. Like some of the best in the country. I switched to geology this year from mining engineering.
Academics are great, if you're in certain departments. Engineering, biz, nursing and of course earth science are some of the best on the west coast. People talking shit about academics are ignorant.

Reno itself is what you make of it. Around campus is decent, but there are some shithole spots around town. Downtown can be shitty or super fun depending what youre doing and who youre with.
I love the outdoors and I'm outside all the time. Theres a ton of spots in the surrounding area for everything. Great skiing that is super close, camping, motocross, skating, hiking, biking...

I'm assuming you'll be in the dorms if you go. I really enjoyed the res halls. I was in one of the newer ones and it was really nice. Theyre what you make of them too. If you wanna have fun then youll have fun.

I was born and grew up in Reno so I'm used to everything, but its a great college.
