Go to college first if you plan on getting a diploma or degree. You'll meet lots of people and if it's a good college there'll be a ski and board club, you'll meet lots of people to shred with.

I should also throw in that im 19 and ive already been to college for a year (MSU), but i couldnt go back for financial reasons. If i live in Spokane ill be going to a community college.

Well it is your call, even community college is good in my opinion though. It gives you something to do for work besides mc dicks, I can't really talk about locations because I'm not from the areas you are looking into. Anyways definitely don't base your decision on what I say, I'm a uni student and definitely have a bias towards post secondary.

If you can afford in-state tuition, go to bellingham and attend Western. If you can't afford a University, then move somewhere around the Seattle area and attend Bellevue College and be driving distance from Snoqualmie, Crystal, and Baker. Or, go to community college in Spokane, move a modest distance away from your parents house and just go to schweitzer when you can. Either way, find a way to get back in school.

Thanks. My parents now live in Arizona, so distance from them isn't my issue. But it seems to be a theme that i should get back in college as fast as i can, and its advice i wont ignore.

One option would be to move to Snoqualmie pass. Be a ski instructor or a lift op and make friends with all of the other seasonal workers. If you live in employee housing it is super cheap, plus you can attend Bellevue College online, and still be 40 minutes driving distance in case you have an on-campus exam or class.

Combine the two. Stack classes on three days, four days of for skiing. School is easy as shit in the US anyway. Take 18-21 credits in the fall semester and take it easy in the spring semester.

Unfortunately, that is EXACTLY the problem I see with living here. It's a wonderful town, and Baker is amazing, but there's such a huge potential to get stuck here, because there isn't much going on that makes you want to pursue your dreams outside of skiing. I see a LOT of people stuck, and the ones that I see being successful... have left to pursue their careers. I LOVE this town, but I'm actually moving to Seattle in the next 6 mo to pursue a career because I don't see myself getting anywhere living in bham.

why are you so set on WA state?

it's important to remember that there are a ton of well-paying, fulfilling, most importantly sustainable, ski bum jobs in the ski industry (which require a 4 year degree). maybe not in bham but at the larger resorts: stevens, snoq, even crystal...among many others across NA

just an FYI- there are zero decent paying jobs at Snoqualmie...unless you're the HR director or GM.

oh, no. not really. for example stevens has 3 full time accounting, 3 HR, and 2 IT people. when people get these jobs, they tend to hold on to them. full time w/ bennies + ~50k/year + living in leavenworth = good shit

You may have a point there, but the IT people at Snoqualmie when I worked there made like 30k-- and pretty much no one had full benefits.  However, that was before they were bought by Boyne, so it might be better now. I also worked there as an HR generalist and didn't make more than 13/hr.

i'm trying to regain my residency i lost when my parents moved me to AZ 2 years ago. I eventually want to go to WWU or Evergreen state, which were my top 2 choices before i was forced to move to arizona. I have the grades to transfer now, but i need instate tuition to be able to afford it.

Job market is tough, and has always been tough. Was talking to a friend's dad (he's been here for 20+ years) about jobs, and he said it's always been a hard place for work, not just during economically hard periods. Real big kid jobs are really hard to find, a lot of people get stuck in the service industry for a long time. In fact, I actually don't think I know a single person in their 20s-30s that has a GOOD job here, unless they started a business of their own or are lucky enough to score a job that gives them perks. Like working for a magazine or ski patrolling... things that get you what you want without having to pay for it. Most of my friends in that age range who are doing things with their careers have moved to Seattle for it.

Also, when it comes to how friendly people are... uhhhmm.... someone summed it up really well by saying that when you walk down the street past some random person, they don't even smile at you half the time, they pretend you aren't there. Whereas in other places I've lived, everyone at least smiles, says hello, etc. Bellingham has the vibe of 'if I want you in my space, I'll invite you, if not, stay the fuck out'. I see people I know all the time, and rarely do I actually have a conversation with them, unless its a planned meeting. If that makes sense? Maybe that's good. Maybe it isn't. I'm sure Western has a different vibe, but I don't and haven't gone there, so I don't know.

I totally sound jaded, and I'm just being honest. I said earlier that I'm leaving because I need to get my career started... and I also miss my friends that have left for better opportunities.

HOWEVER, all of that said... it's an amazing town for many reasons. If you can figure out your niche, you can make it home for a long time. I know that I'll always love it here and be here often, even if home is an hour south. Baker is rad, the community that surrounds it is full of amazing and gnarly people, sometimes locals can be hard to mesh with, but there's a ton of good people too. I've met a lot of amazing people while living here, and I wouldn't trade those friendships for anything. And it snows a fuckload, so thats cool.

I guess it's all about what you want to do while you're here. It's an amazing town for being 20something and doing whatever you want, experiencing a lot, playing outdoors, being a ski bum. If you're looking for amazing winters, a huge natural playground all around you, a community of people all acting 25 no matter their age... move here.

Move to Australia. Move to New Zealand. Move anywhere. If you want to go to college, that is definitely where you should be; but if you feel like people are pushing you towards college, tell them to fuck off and do what you really want to.

The only option i would even consider is NAU, and i dont really want to go to college 30 min from my house. I want to ski 5 days a week once december hits, but i realise that doing well in college and skiing 5 days a week generally don't go well together. But ASU or UofA would be skiing once a month tops, and even if i choose to live in Spokane ill still be skiing most weekends.
