Avid sailor here. I must say I could give two shits less. They have made it into such a production and it has seemed to only embarrass the sailing world even more.

With that being said those boats are an amazing sight. Should be somewhat fun to watch.

Yeah, honestly, it's a bit fucking silly.. but hey, it's in San Francisco, so I don't even care.

And.. holy shit. Rigid sail tri-maran that goes nearly 60mph on a day with ONSHORE WINDS? Seriously. There was barely any wind in the bay area yesterday and those boats can still fly.

Yeah the speeds that those things generate is just amazing. Shouldn't actually be possible.

I don't know how much you follow sailing but I am extremely excited for J70 North Americans. They are end of September in Annapolis. 90 boats registered within the first 3 days filling the race capacity. I am lucky enough to crew with a local owner at the race. Start line will just be silly stupid but I look forward to getting terribly beat by all the pro teams.

I am a sailor and I do a lot of real matchracing (and team sailing) myself.
To be honest I hate they call this matchracing. The boats are awesome etc but I would have liked the series a lot more if all teams that entered had the same boat. Matchracing is when you have exactly the same the same boat, these boats are different. That way it is more fair and all teams have equal chances.. All the money fling is just stupid.
At first I also thought it was stupid they were gonna use catamarans, not good for matchracing etc, but after watching all 4 races I think it is OK..

I watched the LV cup and gave up on the AC's after that. It was terrible match racing. But I have heard the final has been better, closer racing, tacking duels and so on.

Yup. Since I was very little. Sailed in a lot of boats. Mostly faster dinghys and catamarans (Lasers, 2 crewed dinghys, Hobie 18 etc) but also yachts at sea. I did some racing as well, last years I did mostly matchracing and team sailing. Next few years I want to focus on sailing at sea. A dream trip is to set sail here in the Netherlands (with my own built yacht) and go north to Lofoten (Norway) or Iceland and ski the gnar there..

sailboat racing is nascar for classy loaded white folk. my dad used to be a sailmaker and was on some olympic team at one point but then he had kids and got fat and switched to golf.

yup. Been sailing In annapolis since kindergarten probably. Optis, Lasers, and 420s, all junior sailing. Im too old for it now though:( Two summers ago was my last summer junior sailing.

Yup, started in the optimist and later on competed in laser. I did nothing with it for years but now occasionally me and some Danish friends sail boats from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean in Spring and back in the Autumn.

They also do tours on an old Volvo Ocean 60 and when I can I accompany them.

acquired the easiest sailing licence in spring. we only were able to go sailing on a lake nearby two times, but it was fun as fuck. second time was maybe a little bit much windwise for our skills, but a lot of fun. definitely looking into getting another license for bigger boats and eventually off-shore stuff.

We recently came across a Banshee and have slowly been redoing the entire boat. I love the lines of the boat. I recently sold my Force 5 which is kind of similar.

haha that's awesome. I have to do some TLC on mine this winter. Things are starting to get a bit creaky... The force 5 and the laser are similar, but the Banshee is just a little better with the wind behind you. not as precise at tacking back, though.

Haha, good to see a sailing thread on NS, before I skied, I sailed tonnes. Used to sail Lasers a lot, then switched to Hobies and skiffs, competed nationally (UK) and a bit around Europe. Then taught in the Med (Greece and Turkey) and got into windsurfing and kiting, and kiting is my offseason sport now, haven't sailed a dinghy in years.

I know purists miss the monohulls because they offered tighter racing, but they were a box rule as well, the Americas cup has always been about who had the most money. These boats are so insane to watch, I am loving seeing how it develops.

What do people think about the penalty Oracle got? Seems they broke the rules certainly, but 2 points seems really harsh.

They put weights on the king posts of their AC45 training cat during one of the race series a year ago, one trimmer got kicked off the boat, one got banned for a few races, and the team got docked 2 races, which is pretty huge.

I sail for Duxbury High School in Mass but i dont compete in the matches too much because our team was quite good i think we won nationals in 2010 or something

That they punished those sailors and thereby the team I understand, but -2 points in finals is to much really..

Those races in the 45s had nothing to do with this series right? Or did they?

Just watched race 5.. Really amazed by Oracals tactics at the bottom gate.. They were ahead, why do a risky manouvre? Both teams knew how big the that patch with less current under Alcatraz was, there was no need to tack right away to get in that patch. Why not play safe and just tack on top of NZ when they tacked after the mark?
Oracle trained that foiling tack, but it still is risky, use it when you have to not when you are in the lead..

Online the commentators said the Orcale boat is harder to sail (I believe in stronger winds). Anyone knows why or what they mean by that?

Agree here. The boats and sailing are just crazy now. Amazing sight to be seen for sure. However, I still think it would be tons of fun to see these sailors in a Farr 30 or Melges 32. Just pure sailing and showing nothing but talent. Much like the Chicago Match Race Cup with the Elliott 6M.

The AC45 series was (meant to be) one design, and all those top helms and crews compete in other one design match racing series as well. The general public is just not as interested in those as the Americas cup.

I personally always preferred fleet racing in cats or skiffs opposed to team racing or match racing in slower boats, and for me this is a good mix of the two,

I know they dont really count compared to what a lot of you guys sail, but they're both fun as fuck to solo. I'm landlocked as hell and I work weekends at our local lake in the summer (only 50 acres of water) but I get to work around these little guys all day so Its not to bad.

I would love to learn how to actually sail some real sized stuff, so if anyone ever needs an extra deck hand with very little high water sailing experience, Im your guy.
I can do a bunch of random assorted stuff like grill, entertain, make a fool of myself, bang your girlfriend, talk politics, cook, laugh at your jokes... really whatever you need

One day I hope to own something along the lines of this-

If you want to crew on a yacht like that go to Newport Shipyard in RI, they have a bunch of seasonal sailing yachts like the one in that pic that either go south or to europe in the next month or so. That would be some awesome ocean experience

It just isnt sailing with the AC72's, just foiling and who can do the best tact and gybes I mean in The LV cup the Kiwis won a race with no Jib sail. I mean i enjoy the foiling but I want single hull boats back.

Is that the Maltese Falcon? My friends father raced it and won a (transatlantic?) race with it. He started and owns Doyle Sails.

Last summer, the New York Yacht Club annual "race" stopped in Rockport, MA, where I live. Very cool to see 40-50 50+ foot boats in our bay. Beautiful to say the least.

I'm a big sailor from Michigan. Raced opti's and 420's mainly but now I coach. I always get on something interesting for the Port Huron to Mackinac race though.

I am an avid sailor and have been since I could walk. Unfortunately I can't sail as much now since I am landlocked at Umaine but that's beside the point.

I think the America's Cup is great right now because of the technological advancements they are creating and the exposure its creating for the sport. The hydrofoil and wing sail are the latest developments in the world of sailing that has seen very little change since its beginning with the exception of multi-hulled craft.

However, I am disappointed to see that each team is responsible for their own rig and it really hurts me to see people race when they know they do not have the faster boat, this is simply unfair.

by the way has anyone here ever sailed a moth?

I'm over the foiling... it's just sorta not really sailing at that point... It's more like flying on water. It's cool because of the speed, but I would LOVE to see real yachts for once.
