Help on buying a lense (canon)

I want to buy my wife a lense for her canon rebel t4i. Have no clue where to start. I believe the lense she got with the camera is an 18-55 mm lense. I know she would like to take some better macro, and shoot at a distance, and have some versatility when it comes to pictures. Any help?

So she wants a Macro, tele and a zoom?

I only know of vintage lenses that do that all, but sadly not very well.

If she wants it alongside the kit lens, then go with the 70-200 f4 L. If she wants a "do it all" lens to replace her kit lens, the 18-135 f3.5-5.6 would be a good bet. I would go with the tele though.

All right thanks for the bit of advice. She doesn't want a do it all lense I just won't ask cause I want it to be a surprise. So what is just a good second lense for a new shooter.

i have an 18-55 and use it regularly and am just starting to build my glass. It sounds like for what she wants, a tele lens is your best bet. What you want to spend defines what you'll get

Everyone is right, the 70-200 f4 non IS is the best bet, It's got wicked optical quality, and usually you can get one for around 500 used, 600-650 new. This is also a great lens because if she wants to shoot macro with it, it's super sharp all around and especially at the edges, which is a necessity in shooting macro

You could go for a 70-300 as well, and while it's got a greater focal range than the one above, it's much softer, especially past 200 so it wouldn't really work for macro as well, and it just won't perform as well

Depending on how much you want to spend and how into photography she is, that'll determine your decision

Just confirming what has been suggested. Note that this 70-200mm lens has mini focal distance of 120cm which is pretty close knowing you have a good zoom range.
