I know that NS must have a sizable BMX scene, but there never seems to be any ongoing discussion about it in NSG. Rather than go spend my time in the shitstorm that is Vital BMX, I'd like to converse with you all.

What parts do you ride? Where? Seen any good edits lately?


And those who might be interested in starting, if you need advice, don't hesitate to ask.


I'll bump this thread with edits and pictures, and hopefully some other bikers will come out of the woodwork.

Used to ride a We The People Trust.

Loved the bike but had to sell it when I didn't have enough time to do all the sports I wanted.

favourite memory though was bombing a hill with a buddy and getting clocked going 93km by a car.

Tons of fun but don't forget to wear a helmet, it definitely saved me a couple times.

All I will say is that I wish I had firstly the time, and secondly the balls, to get into and stay with it. Looks like a lot of fun, and park BMX is easily the smoothest and flowiest looking action sport going.

I struggle with this. I used to wear a helmet, all the time. I still wear one when I ride my fixed gear, and a huge proponent of them skiing, but a few months ago I just stopped. Not sure why. It just felt weird being the only person wearing one at a street spot, or having to carry it around all the time.

I feel exactly this way about skiing. Living in Richmond, the BMX scene is so amazing, and the skiing scene is... nothing. So the choice was easy for me.

I love riding park, and Blacksburg's was amazing. I miss it, but street is where the hype is right now, and it's all that Richmond offers (apart from trails).

I've got a verde theory that I ride occasionally. I'm not too good and I don't know any tricks. I just like dropping in/launching off of the ramps in my local park and cruising around places.

I have a 6+ year old S&M custom that I've outgrown and is largely outdated. I'm thinking of getting back into it. How much should I be looking to spend for something quality(I remember it formerly being from 1-1.5k)? Are there any completes that can compete with customs spec wise? Is Odyssey still the go to brand for almost everything?

unless you're pretty serious check craigslist--my roommate found two sick ones for 50 bucks apiece--gyros n everything. note that I know mountain bikes but don't know bmx bikes that well, but they're sick bikes as far as I can tell. the nice thing about bmx is that they're just simple barebones bikes, lots of people don't use brakes...if it pedals smooth and the frames solid it'll work. unless you're seriously into racing I couldn't seriously consider spending over a few hundred bucks, much less over 1k.

this is one of the coolest edits I"ve seen in a while--dude kills it.

I just have a mtb and did a bit of dh but after watching some bmx videos im definitely thinking of switching over... what are some good brands that sell decent bikes that arent too expensive for someone starting up, and what are some beginner tips you may have? thanks for making this thread +K

All my friends take riding pretty seriously. I mean it's actually all they do. Doubt very many of you have heard of BMXFU or DWOK. But a few of my friends ride for both.

No hate, but gyro's don't mean a damn thing about the bike. Yes, I am looking for something pretty serious. I would probably try to get something off Craigslistr or PB and then maybe get some used parts if needed. As stated before I haven't been following BMX for 6+ years now so I just want a sort of heads up if some things have changed on not.

I ride a MacNeil Loden with a bunch of custom parts on it. super ill bike. but if anyone wants to get into bmx you can get a really good bike on kijiji or craigslist for $250-$350, definatley worth every penny

I don't ride, but my best friend and a couple others do, and since we're about to be living together i'm probably going to pick it up. I do film it though and it's really fun to watch, especially the kids who are good. one of my buddies rides for Haro bikes. i have no idea who filmed this, but he's the kid without the helmet

The thing is, its exactly that (for me, at least). I ran brakes for years, and I can honestly say that brakeless helps. I also find that it helps my style (not feathering my brakes all the time) and makes my bike look way better.

THAT BEING SAID

No one should start out riding brakeless. It's important to learn the basics of bike control before you pull the stoppers off. Common sense, people.

i never ride a skatepark brakeless for the concern of others, bikeparks are different

Bars are taller and wider, most people run 25-9 ratios, tires are wider, seats are lower.

As far as talking bmx, I like brakes. I will fufanu the shit out of anything or anyone that get's in my way. That said I haven't really ridden in years other than occasionally hopping on a bike and seeing if I can still do anything.

I seriously miss riding. I built a bike from the ground up when I worked in a shop. Mutiny frame, lots of odyssey parts, brakeless, free coaster, 28/9 gearing, biggest tires I could fit. 23ish lbs. I'll post a picture when I'm not on mobile.

The only way I would run brakes is if I rode trails. It's super easy to scrub speed riding street and park. You just have to be really aware of your surroundings. Accidents happen, but they happen to guys running brakes too.

Riding brakeless is for weight weenie fad followers. It is dumb, dumb, dumb. If you need to take your brakes off to keep you from pussing out on a trick, you were a pussy to begin with and you're just going to hurt yourself without them when you bail and throw your bike like every other brakeless idiot who realizes they can't stop before a big gap.

I never have had my brakes get in the way. All these kids that can't even manual or jhop a curb riding brakeless because OMG ITS SO KEWL.

The thing about the brakeless fad argument is its been debated for a decade now. Brakeless riding isn't going anywhere. The only people running brakes are dedicated trail riders and parkrats. I have never seen a crash (in person) that was directly attributed to not having brakes. It happens when people aren't paying attention.

I've been wanting to get into bmx for a while now and I'm not really sure how to pick up a bike, my budget is 300 MAX and it is pretty hard to find anything bigger than a 20 inch frame on craigslist because I'm 6'2" and i think i need the bigger frame. Any suggestions?

its not cleaner.. take my bike.. cable run clean as hell, not to long and i have a linear cable so i can spin the bars just fine without losing braking.

pumping has nothing to do with brakes. i have a pump track at my trails and brakes come in handy to just speed check when needed. i also use them to drop the front end sometimes when i hit a jump.

also like them to do tail taps and other lip tricks (yes i know you can get all fancy and do them with pedal pressure)

why only pegs on one side? I figure you guys have a preference as to which side you grind on, but wouldn't it benefit you to be able to grind on both sides? It'd be like learning a trick switch, at least in lollerblading. instead of left foot you do right foot, instead of left pegs you do right pegs. or for maybe a handrail spot where you have to grind one side or something.

In BMX it's hugely difficult to become comfortable with grinds even on your strong side. Pegs on both sides is impractical for most riders for weight issues too

BMX scares me. With a skateboard, at lest it kind of flies away if you fall. Bikes are like, nope, I'm just gonna fall all over you. And I know they're light as far as bikes go but still. There's a couple of really good kids at the bowl I skate, they air so high from a 9ft section. It looks really fun.

Also riding a bike backwards is hard as shit. I do it for like 2 seconds then spin around or fall.
