External monitor [Canon 5DmkII]

Hi M&A !!

So next year i'll be filming a lot of skiing with my personal camera and I know I will definitely need a external monitor for steadycam shots, or even for overall practical reasons while skiing + filming.
I know their are a lot of different external monitors since we use them a lot a school. But filming in a studio with ARRI or F55 isn't like filming action movements with a DSLR.
So if anyone has a external monitor to recommend for skiing, I will be grateful.

Don't want to make a thread about it so I'll use this one for my question, what's a good mic when filming ski ? (remember, I have a DSLR).

ill sit here in the monitor discussion...

but if you don't have much experience with audio, rode mics are a good place to begin and easy on your wallet!

Are Rode mics Hyper or Omni ? I need omnidirectional mic.
For interviews i'll probably have a wireless mic.

I've used SmallHD monitors on various occasions, they are quite nice and very feature packed. They range from cheap, to not so cheap. Best part is the swappable backplates that allow you to you use the battery you want including the 5D batteries.

I found out Lilliput does some, 5" to 10", purposely built for Canon 5Ds.

if you want a cheap monitor go for the liliput, it will basically be an extra 5d screen that you can move. If you want something good go for the small HD. I use a 7 inch small hd monitor for my camera and I love it. The sharpness is insane, I can focus super easily. I have Peaking on my FS700 so I dont need the monitors peeking but if I didnt, it would be a huge feature.

Small HD's are awesome and have good features, lilliputs are alright, like said above basically just a 5d monitor you can move. I used a zacuto zfinder too and that was a great screen but probably too small for what you're thinking of using it for (farther viewing distance)

as far as mics go, you don't really want an omni out on the slopes. nobody needs to hear people yellin shit from the chairlift and your breathing and skis sliding, etc. a shotgun mic works best on the hill and if you are doing interviews on a huge budget, you could get by with the same mic in a spot with a fairly isolated background.  if you already have a separate wireless lavalier mic for interviews, you need a shotgun mic. the RODE VideoMic Pro is awesome and thats what i have. works great skiing too

omni mic on ski hill = headache in the ears. thats my thoughts

Hey Tikayt, have you settled on a device yet?

I love to shoot footage when I'm skiing and can strongly recommend the Atomos Ninja: http://www.atomos.com/ninja/ This will do everything you need and it's super user-friendly. Even an amateur like me can pick it up pretty easily!
