Because a simple "hi" "how's it going" type question doesn't actually engage them, and once they say good and repeat the process you are right back where you started. You have to find something about them that interests you and ask them about it.

no you don't, you can say literally anything it just has to be longer than one word. excuse me i needed your opinion on something, I really like this shirt because it's blue and I'm told it brings out my eye's. But i think i'd look better with a dark color shit on what do you think? it could be anything
