I need a new jacket for the upcoming season

stick with a shell so you can layer beneath it and have more options for insulation than jacket on/jacket off.

OP forget heavy. You want something that Breaths and is water repellent. Layering is the name of the game.
Water repellent is the biggy you want.
You want something in 15,000-20,000mm rating. Heres a guide help you. Now just go to the stores and find a deal. Check REI, Midwest Mountaineering, the house boardshop. All places that will be having sales soon in the Twin cities areas.

I would definitely stick with a waterproof / breathable shell (Gore-Tex, HyVent, etc.) and layer underneath. You'll stay warm and dry and if you get too hot you can just shed a layer instead of opening vents and letting snow in.
