i mean if they want one that badly they can pretty easily go out of state to get one?

its not that theyre banning tesla cars from texas, only the path that elon musk wants to take to sell them to the public.

i find it kind of funny about the "only 20,000 have been sold......" theyre $100 000 cars.... how many do you expect to be sold already? the model s only went on sale last year i believe

Probably because they are insanely expensive, the batteries suck, and they are very temperamental. This article about Fisker was pretty interesting:

There was another one in Road and track or car and driver where they dropped the car off to test it and it wouldn't run.

I absolutely can't stand continuous drive systems like Nissan has in most of their cars now. For winter driving it is about the dumbest system I have ever encountered. I have never driven a Tesla or other high end electric car, but if it has a continuous drive system like Nissan's; I probably never will.

its not even the generation of the energy that is the part that makes electric cars less viable, its the batteries, the production process is not eco-friendly, the transport of the batteries is not eco-friendly, and the disposal of the depleted batteries is not yet completely eco-friendly.

electric cars are a step forward, but they are not yet the be-all-end-all of an environment saving alternative to fossil fuels.

From my reading of this, it seems like Teslas aren't being banned because they're electric cars or because they're eco-friendly or whatever you'd typically think,  but rather that Tesla wants to sell their cars directly to consumers. In many states, dealerships have enacted anti-competition laws to make sure that new entrants can't simply come in and undercut their (large) profits, pricing them out of business. It's a terrible system for both car buyers and auto manufacturers, especially small ones like Tesla, but they've stuck around because, well, dealerships lobby for this, and no one really lobbies against it.

is that the same thing as cvt? it seem slike it would be advantageous for wet/ice conditions because it would reduce the jerkiness of sudden downshifts

I'm not really a huge fan of electric cars, either, but I think the best thing that MAY come out of Tesla is a little bit of heat on the car dealership industry. I think that a little round of Elon Musk vs. Car Dealers would help everyone (car salesmen excepted), and I hope more companies/people throw their political weight around with Musk in the fight.

i agree. while it may not be THE alternative to fossil fuels, it is AN alternative to fossil fuels, and not only that, but this man is trying to shake things up for the automotive industry and create something that may result in something hugely beneficial for the consumer market by providing the "apple store" style of buying/selling cars at a uniform price and cutting out the dealership (read: stealership) entirely

What happened to air compressed cars? That seemed like a good idea and the energy you can use for a air compressor can come from hydro, solar, or wind.

I've been driving in snow since I got my license. I have never been more uncomfortable on snow packed conditions than when I was driving a car with that system. There is a delay when you put your foot on the gas, which feels the same as when the clutch is going on a car with a standard shift. When you are driving on snow, you put your foot on the gas and you can't tell whether the tires are losing grip or whether it's the transmission. Ask any person who really enjoys driving, if they like that system and you will be lucky to find 1 out of 100 who are actually OK with it.

yeah i've always wondered this too...seems like a solid idea to store energy w/out the complex systems like rechargeable batteries/hydrogen

a compressed-air assisted bicycle would be cool for commuters because you could easily power a pump with a wall outlet

Ugh, I drove one of these once, (cant remember what car) it does feel freakin awful. Its terrible. I didnt notice the delay, but the lack of a shift/almost constant rpm's is a very strange feeling. I suppose its something you get used to sooner or later.

first, i graduated highschool in 2003, but thanks for coming out bud.

second, i didnt say a single thing about electric cars.

i said it boggles my mind that we are still using gasoline powered cars.

its 2013. im sure as shit that if the automobile and petroleum industry put the same time in effort into researching alternative means to propel automobiles as they did into deciding how to milk every last dollar out of oil, that we would have an alternative solution by now.

There is no transmission for the Tesla. It is direct drive right off the motor. The Tesla straight up RIPS!!! My buddy's cousin has one, and I got to take it for a spin a few weeks ago. Talk about torque!!!!! Instant torque, and with the traction control off it will smoke the tires like crazy. It's a super fun car to drive, and is nothing like the continues drive system in the Nissan.

I hate on anything I want. Right now, for the vast majority of the world, neither electric vehicles or comparable gasoline-powered vehicles holds a solid advantage over the other in cleanliness. This balance will probably not change any time in the near future as the problem with electric vehicles is not inherent to them, but rather to the means by which we generate our electricity. Although electric vehicles offer some compelling advantages over internal combustion engine vehicles in terms of pollution management, the real advantage of electric vehicles lies in the future when more electricity is produced from cleaner sources.

Apart from the Fisker I love that thing, because it looks good.

Anyway, they are saying you can own the Model S for $580 per month (after gas savings). That's pretty pricey and they are saying that the range is 265 miles.

The problem for me is that I use my car to commute up to Vail and back to Denver in the winter. For an electric vehicle to be useful to me, it would have to be able to haul a bunch of gear, have six seats, and be able to make it up to Vail (120 miles), be parked outside in a lot in potentially subzero temperatures for 8 hours, and then be able to drive back 120 miles to Denver, without having to recharge. If it can't do that, it is not practical. I'm sure at some point they will create an electric vehicle like that, but I am definitely not going to be the first one on my block to own it. I'll let someone else guinea pig it.

One other question that comes to mind is how they do in bumper to bumper I-70 traffic. So basically, you are driving back from Eagle or Summit county (for the Colorado folks), and your hour and forty-five minute drive turns into a 3.5 hour slow moving social event with thousands of your closest friends. So what happens then? As an entrepreneur I would start thinking about building large parking lots in strategic places with charging stations at every parking spot. Charging for a charge will be the next big thing, but it probably already is in places where people own more electric cars. I'm sure that someone at Vail Resorts is already planning on retro fitting the parking structures. So it will now cost you about $50 to park all day and charge your car, and it still may not make it back to Denver if you get stuck on the tunnel approach.

there are other options available besides 100k tesla's.

AND there would be even more (affordable) options available if the automobile industry had focused their attention on alternative fuels years and years ago, and not just starting today.

I disagree. I went from driving a WRX with conti DWS extreme contact tires, which are very good in the snow to a Honda Insight with some winterforce snow tires. I did the same drives, Denver to wherever, summit, CB, Steamboat and honestly the honda with a CVT was very secure and predictable on snow, with grip at least equal to the wrx. The CVT also allowed me to achieve 50mpg round trip to CB, and 42mpg round trip to Summit while going 5-10 over the speed limit the whole time. I know the sensation you're talking about, the delayed throttle response and while it might have been frustrating at first, I didn't notice any issues on snow, and honestly it's a pretty similar feeling to shifting too soon and not getting the umpff you were expecting with a manual transmission.

so how much oil do we have left? 10 years? 100 years? if we knew we were running out do you think that would kick-start the electric car?

It is known that the lithium batteries in hybrids and electronics require a conflict mineral and people still buy the fuck outta everything lithium... we require slaves in foreign places for our daily lives, no biggie. Oil industry is going to milk it til it's dry.
